What kind of sugar cane is this?
« on: April 29, 2022, 12:12:05 PM »
Anyone know what kind of sugar cane this is?  The grower says it is black sugar cane.  It doesn't look black to me.  It is supposed to be a soft chewing type.  I'm going to pick some up today.

Thanks,
Bill

I don't know what variety it is, but it is definitely not black.

There are a few different purpleish varieties, most all are descendants of the old variety "Purple Ribbon". I have one that looks similar.

It could be a Louisiana Purple (which is the mutation of Purple Ribbon without the stripes), but it looks a little waxier to me. However, cane varieties are notoriously difficult to identify. It is not Badilla (AKA Asian Black) which is the variety most people are referring to when they talk about black cane.
