Nastiest mango varieties?
« on: July 26, 2022, 01:44:30 AM »
I just had a Cushman. I'm adding it to the list of nastiest mangos -- great looking fruit, but weird nasty undertones to the taste profile in my opinion. The fruit tends to not ripen evenly as well, so you can be gnoshing on a wedge and occasional get a taste of overripe fermented vomit taste in the middle of your bite. I wouldn't eat another one. To be fair, there has been a lot of rain, so maybe that has something to do with it.

What are some other varieties to avoid?

I had a fruiting 'Cushman' mango tree in Broward and I found them to be classic flavored and delicious with a 'peachy' mouth feel. The large fruit shape, no fiber and roundish size added more to novel of this mango for me though its growth habit was difficult to train. Brix was in the 19 and low 20's. I'd venture to add 'Dominican' mango as one I'll never try again. Eating it all I thought was this mango is junk (no offense).  :)

No where to plant it ...but at least I got it. ;)

Sorry to hear about the bad experience with a 'spoiled' aka 'rotten' mango. Even an 'appus' may get rotten in various circumstances. Unseasonal rain can cause fungal disease. Wounding or bruising while picking, picking immature fruit, storage in less than 21 degrees C, the way they are stored or stacked with heavy pressure on them and so on and on. You did the wise thing like I would have done by discarding it. Recommend to try another Cushman from a different store. If properly harvested, handled, stored and ripened you may somewhat change your opinion on the ' Cushmans'. Good luck.

I don’t like spicy mangoes much…a little spice is fine, but all out like buxton spice and jakarta are really annoying. It’s obviously a taste preference and I’m sure other would say they enjoy them.
