Maprang VS Mango
« on: October 16, 2022, 05:24:24 AM »
Still see the occasional post here or on Facebook where someone purchases a maprang, but it ends up being a mango.  I took some pics earlier to do side by side comparisons between the two.  Hopefully it will help someone make a more informed decision before purchasing.  Insist on having close up pics of the trees sent.

These first pics are of the maprang wan...or sweet maprang.

Notice on these next two pics how the leaves are in pairs and oppose each other.

Here it is compared to a mango.  The leaf size difference is very noticeable.

These next pics are of the mayong chid maprang.

Mango leaves still much larger than mayong chid

Here are the two maprangs side by side.  Mayong chid leaves are larger than wan, but still much smaller than mango.

These two pics are mango.  Not only are the leaves much bigger than maprang, but the leaves are not opposing.  Very obvious differences now that both are displayed together.  The other thing that looks unique to mango is how the terminal leaves are in a starburst bunch.  Maprang doesn't do this.

A comment on maprang leaf size.  I believe maprang leaves could appear larger than what I have hear due to possible environmental influences.  But the opposing leaves are a dead giveaway.

Any growing tips for maprang?  My grafted mango has always been super healthy, but I've had three maprang seedlings over the years and it is like they do not want to live, doing almost nothing for many months then dying.

Not sure if this helps, but my maprang gets full sun only a few hours per day, and lots of dappled light. Plenty of water and humidity. Growing well, but slower than most mangoes.

The maprangs I have grown have only had 2-3 growth flushed per year.
I planted a grafted maprang in full sun, it flowered twice without setting any fruit, and died. It never grew much beyond it's original height. I now have a seedling in-ground, and in conditions similar aß to those described by roblack - full sun for a couple of hours during the mid-day. Currently it stands about 7 ft tall. In January 2021, it started to out 3 panicles, but ran out of gas when they reached about 1 inch. Hopefully I will have better news in late January 2023.

Thanks, I had noticed that when I moved them from mostly sun to mostly shade they seemed to stabilize a bit, but as you say growth is extremely slow.  That is fine for me, though, no rush

after trying this fruit, I was suprised it was not grown more commonly in FL. I'm not sure why more people don't grow this. I would assume this would do fine down there.

Amy K....there is at least one nursery in Puerto Rico selling grafted maprang and it is very very pricey.  We've also pretty much determined that these are most likely mangos and not the real deal.  So as I stated, I would ask for detailed pictures of the tree to determine exactly what you may be trying to purchase.

Jaboticaba45...sounds like it would be easy, but only a few people have had any type of success with them in Florida.  They are much more sensitive than mango and can be very finicky.  In my experience so far, young trees have terrible root systems and do not handle shipping well...even less if bare rooted.  Just my two cents.

I have a grafted maprang from Zills CR nursery. It’s grown slowly and is decent size but has never flowered. They don’t flower often at Zills either. Our conditions are very different.
I’m terms of soil and climate what do you think are ideal conditions?
