ISO Black Sapote Scions (pref: Matt Snow / Matt’s Giant)
« on: February 01, 2024, 10:34:30 PM »
I’m looking for a scion of black sapote to graft onto a fairly mature seedling tree.

I’ve read that Matt’s Giant BS is a favorite but I’m open to other varieties you recommend.

Cheers!.

I love Matt's Giant sapote, probably the best variety in the states (though not much to compare to). Superb size and flavor and the OG tree is gorgeous. I wish my grafts had been successful; im too embarrassed to ask Matt for more scionwood lol.

But I was fortunate to get in touch with him and view his enormous farm in Homestead; he's put a lot of effort into Jacks and mangos. He expressed dissatisfaction with nurseries selling Matts Giant/Matt Snow since he had no quality control with that and someone supposedly shared that budwood against his directly expressed wishes. Anything on eBay is definitely not it.

If you have the opportunity to get in contact with him and/or travel down to Homestead, I would recommend it. Super nice guy and more than willing to share if you're kind and respectful.

That’s a good recommendation. I’m sorry your grafts didn’t take. Someday I’d like to do a pilgrimage down to Homestead. If anyone is in contact with Matt or knows a legitimate source for his variety, let me know.

Do you have a picture of the fruit?

Spent like half an hour searching my photos... found everything but the fruit lol.

I found this picture online; to my recollection, the last two fruits I ate looked almost identical to the one pictured, maybe slightly larger. One ripened in two weeks, the other ripened after a month and a half. I was surprised how evenly ripe they were considering their size.

I would like to join you in finding cuttings, it's unfortunate that we cannot even buy cuttings from Matt.

Wow, that is impressively large.

I like black sapote and it has been really easy to grow for me. I am interested is a grafted type as my seedling is nice but I think the fruit quality could be better.  I hadn't really looked much into what is available and I have no idea how hard they are to graft.

Since reading this thread I checked Lara Farms site, they have four types listed:  Bernicker, Oblong, Rieneke/Merida, and Wilson.  Anyone know anything about these?  I am hesitant to order one in the middle of winter, might as well wait 'til spring but I hope they aren't out of stock then.
