Curious about some Eugenias . . . ?
« on: September 11, 2024, 03:59:53 AM »
Got to thinking about Eugenias and which of the more commonly grown species
might be:

1]  seasonal,
2]  ever-blooming, or
3]  sporadic bloomers,

in Florida.  I'm mostly talking about:

Eugenia uniflora (Pitanga) = sporadic throughout the year

E. brasiliensis  (Grumichama)  = ? ? ?

E. calycina  (Savannah Cherry) =  ? ? ?

E. candolleana  (Rainforest Plum) = Spring in Florida when it's dry so needs some irrigation

E. luschnathiana (Pitomba) = seasonally limited

E. selloi  (Pitangatuba) = seems to be lightly sporadic for me throughout the summertime

E. stipitata  (Araça Boi) = sporadic or continuous once mature

OK, the above what I coulld find readily online.  I'm sure that some of our Florida TFFers
may have some useful input to add (or to just correct me).

For me in 9b SoCal:

Uniflora: 2 crops

Grumichama: 2 crops

Calycina: 2 crops, much stronger spring crop

Candolleana: 1 crop

Pitangatuba: one continuous flowering event from when it warms up to end of season

Stipitata: One flowering in Fall

From what I've seen, anyone in 10a or above, or even better, everwarm Florida, you guys can get WAY more crops if not year round / ever bearing.

If you have sufficient wattage on your lights, and can control humidity, anything is possible. I would say to replicate that type of sun intensity, you'll need 500w of LED per 8 sq. ft, and a lot water. It is a tremendous cost to run that set-up. One thing for high dollar crops, another thing for sub tropicals that will need 5-10 years to fruit.
