Quenepa/Mamoncillo Leaves Male or Female
« on: February 05, 2014, 05:20:15 PM »
Hello All

I am new and I do not know the difference between a Quenepa/Mamoncillo male tree or female tree.

Can someone please describe or/and post pictures of a male quenapa tree leaf and a female Quenepa tree leaf so I can know which will produce the fruit.

Thanks in advance.

The difference is in the flowers, the sexual parts, not the leaves.

Are your trees flowering already? Usually takes many years for them to start flowering. This is a slow growing tree.

If it is a grafted tree it probably is hermaphrodite, meaning it has both male and female on same tree, so should be self pollinating. But best if you check at place you bought it.

Where did you buy a grafted spanish lime tree? What cultivar did they say it was?

That tree is only worth about $10. I hope he didn't pay any more than that.

Don't get that started damn it! More like $50.. Cleft grafted in Puerto Rico, three feet tall, shipped and recovered from bare root in a humidity tent, fertilized and watered for a year and half... And for the record he didn't pay $50 if its the same guy!!

Hey all. I am a peaceful gut just looking for information and knowledge. The tree looks OK and I am sure it will grow healthy.

I was advises if the leaf stem have leaf shaped wings on the leaf stem it is male. If there are no wings on the leaf stem it is female.

Hello everyone,

I have a question and was wondering if anyone has experience with quenepa trees that can help. I bought a grafted quenepa tree (about 3 feet tall) about 4 years ago and this year for the first time is flowering. I am wondering if the flowers will turn into fruit but I’m not sure so hoping maybe someone has knowledge on this process that could help. I’m also noticing that some of the flowers are tuning brown in the middle. Not sure if thats expected or is an issue. Adding an image of one of the flowers in case it helps.

Those flowers look male to me. If the tree you have is grafted, it may take additional time for it to produce hermaphrodite flowers or it may have been a male variety so growers can plant a pollinator amongst female trees.  Flowers should have a green ovary in the center of each flower that sticks out and looks like a tiny fruit. What is the variety of your tree?

Thanks Brandon. By any chance you wouldn’t haven’t to have a picture of a female flower to see how that one looks compared to the male?

So it rained last night and most of the flowers fell from the tree. :-\ I think even if grafted I’m not getting any fruits this year.

Hi all, I have a couple trees doing pretty decent here in so cal but they are from seed. I would love to get hold of a couple scions if possible. I am willing to buy or trade. Please let me know if you can spare a cut or two.

Thank you!

One of my quenepa seedlings flowered for the first time recently. It appears to have female flowers and I'm not sure but looks like it may have set fruit already, maybe someone else familiar could let me know what they think?

Can't wait to see what I get in the genetic lottery with this one.
