Rare African fruit photos
« on: May 27, 2013, 12:04:32 AM »
I came across a Flickr site that mentioned Roy Danforth so I took a look.  There are some amazing pics of rare fruits there.  Not all the fruits shown are indigenous but most are -- unfortunately, you have to wade through pics of other kinds of plants to find the fruit pics.  You could spend a lot of time researching some of the fruits shown here:

I came across another site with pictures of African fruits:

This has west African plants but has links to other regions.

Yesterday i was wondering why we know so little about African tropical fruits.  I just Googled for "fruit Nigeria" or "fruit Congo" and found so many pics but i have no idea if those fruits are special enough to mention on the site.

There must be much more info on the web about African fruits and i guess also undiscovered species can be found there.

A whole host of different reasons why African fruits are little known, but i think main ones:
!) poverty, which means very few people have access to and can post info on the internet.
2) political strife, which mean few research centers and researchers willing to go there. Do you want to go to the Congo on your next family vacation and bring back some seeds?  ;)

Oscar i know many people who have been in Ivory-coast, Nigeria, Congo etc. But for myself i don't want to go there.

Maybe some big american nursery can send a scout to Africa to find new species. Maybe the scout finds a superfruit that we all love and will buy for 150$ a tree. Maybe he even finds the durian that will fruit in the USA then he will be the new hero for Florida.

Africa will also come online soon and maybe then we can have some african members on the forum.
