here's hoping that "the tough Gold Nugget" holds up to cold as well!! Mine was struggling in a pot so i put it in the ground!! Within 2 days, it started flushing!! Of course the summer is not one I'm afraid of in zone 8B!!

wow!!! Here's hoping!!! I wonder from this point forward, what time frame are they looking at to start testing on trees! Hopefully they move fast enough to where there's an industry left!

I've learned quite a bit from you because I've been in forums with you since Citrus Forum. I do many of the basics like keeping good aeration, fertilizing, flushing, etc. My Nugget and an all-spice are the only two trees struggling. I have Sanguinell blood orange, cara-cara, meyer and mexican lime that are all very healthy. They are all the same age. They obviously don't produce heavy, but they do produce and look very healthy.

Unfortunately i live in zone 8b and I was told by Laaz that in my climate, my nugget would never have enough time to fruit.

Could i put my cara cara or blood orange in the ground?

I've had my nugget in a pot for like 5 years... It doesn't seem to be doing as well in containers as some of my other varieties. I'm going to go with a bigger pot this weekend to see if that helps. It doesn't look too bad, but just not as healthy as others.

I meant twice a week, not twice a day.

I will cover it with shade cloth.. too bad they won't re-green. I never would have thunk that would happen because it got direct sun while in a pot and never suffered any sun damage.

roots were extremely healthy so I'm not too concerned that it won't come back.

Thank you guys for your replies!

I am watering twice a day.. do you think i need to increase that amount? The soil is a bit sandy....

The roots were minimally damaged if damaged at all because they were on air root containers.

Also, the other trees i planted at the same time are doing very well. The naval is flushing like crazy and it was planted right next to it.

I recently put my potted 5 year old flame grapefruit in the ground! As much as this tree loves sun and with so much root, I thought it would absolutely take off!! SURPRISINGLY, it seems to be getting sunburned!! Very odd since a naval and page planted at same time, also from pots, are thriving!!

Should I put a shade cloth on it or just leave it be until it acclimates?

Temps haven't been horrible... 95 for a couple days but mostly mid to high 80s.

I just put 4 citrus that had been in containers for 4 years in the ground and i started noticing sunburn! VERY SURPRISED, especially with my grapefruit since they love heat! Anyways, i just painted all of the trunks white as well. I've seen them painted white all my life so i figured it wouldn't hurt! I also painted some bare root pecans and peaches as well just while they acclimate. i don't know that i will do it once they are established.

I'm curious what others think as well.

what a complete and utter disaster!!!!

Thank you Millet.

Last question, i promise! Do you consider the age of the tree all together or how long it's been in the ground. For example, my trees are 3-5 years old but were in containers; this is the first year I put them in the ground.

Mr. TEXAS, wish I'd read your post prior to grafting! This was amateur hour at best!! I slit rootstock and opened up both sides but it didn't go smooth! I struggled with one side and cut a little off the middle so slit sides weren't touching. Prepped the bud and made sure everything was completely sanitized, even my hands, with rubbing alcohol.. what do I do, I drop it in the dirt!! I put it in and had really good contact in back and one of the sides; one other side wasn't touching anything.

I then chip budded (hadn't read your post) and sure enough root bark was too big! I ended up having to put two buds just to fill the chip!! Of course those two buds fell on dirt as well...

LOOKS SO EASY ON UTUBE!!!

I'll wait 21 days and see if by some miracle, either graft takes..

Thanks for all the help!

Mr Texas, i just watched the video on how to bark graft. EXCELLENT ADVICE!!! I was really concerned with how thick the rootstock is and this seems as if it is exactly what i need! Really appreciate it!! Should i do one bark graft and a back up t-bud or chip bud?

My bud wood has finally arrived!!!!! Wooo-hooo!!

I am going to bud to the rootstock where my kumquat used to be grafted. I hope bark still slips on such old rootstock. I'm supposed to bend the original growth to encourage bud to grow but there's very little growth. Should I just proceed as normal and worry about that in 21 days?

Finally, how long can I keep budwood? Should I store in fridge? Right now it's wrapped in a wet paper towel.

Thank u!!!

I have always had all of my citrus trees in containers and use Jack's 5-1-3 ratio.. I recently planted a Flame grapefruit, Washington Naval, Page Mandarin and unknown mandarin grown from seed in the ground.

Since I have never had them in the ground before, I was wondering what was the best ration for in-ground fertilizer? My local Home Depot sells 3 different brands.

Thank you,

I finally found bud wood that is being shipped to me from the University of AZ Corp Extension. Funny thing is that the professor in charge of the program was kind of surprised that I had been chasing one for so long! He asked, "have you every tasted one?" he said his was not impressive at all and he was actually going to reduce the amount of fertilizer he gives it.

I'm expecting my buds any day now and will plant them to unknown rootstock where my kumquat was grafted to but died! What i know about this rootstock is that it very aggressive! I never had to clip growth below the graft on any of my trees like i did on my dead kumquat!
