I've heard they don't do well on their own roots, so unless you are trying to breed new varieties you are probably better off with grafted kumquats. I imagine they will take many years to fruit from seed, especially in a container in a northern climate. They do germinate very easily, though. I spit the seeds back into the containers when I eat the fruit and there are always little kumquat plants sprouting in the soil.
