Does it make a difference if you use a wide, squat pot or a deep pot of the same diameter?

Citrus roots grow wider than they do deeper, Even with in ground citrus trees the vast majority of the tree's root system is only in the top 20 inches of soil. Very few containers used by people growing container citrus trees are much deeper than 20 inches . A wide fairly deep container 20"+- would be all right for a tree that has grown large enough to be in such a container. All my container trees are in containers that are as deep as they are wide. Look at the huge containers that the Versailles's and the Dutch National citrus collection at Het Lou are growing in. They are deep and wide. I have one large citrus tree growing is a 4'X4'X4' container it produces a ton of fruit.

How does someone move one of those large boxes without damaging it? Some kind of dolly cart? I tried moving my old whisky barrel with dolly cart and the wooden bottom fell out.

Both Versailles and Het Lou citrus trees are moved with fork lifts.

Millet, thank you for you reply. Then why do nurseries grow their seedlings in 4 inch by 9 inch deep pots if citrus roots are not deep? Is it to save space?

Yes, have you ever seen the benches of new trees at a citrus nursery? Packed close together. Also cheaper to produce, cheaper to ship, and easier to plant..
