"Passiflora-quadrangularis Challenge"
« on: March 13, 2023, 09:29:25 PM »
The "Passiflora-quadrangularis Challenge" winner will get the following:

1. Winner gets to name this seedling variety.
2. Winner will receive either $50 Paypal credit (from me) or $50 worth of items when
    I sell any fruit tree cuttings. Or the choice of any 1 cutting from my loquat collection
   (81 varieties).

-> See special note below (3-23-23) on loquat variety

-> I'm not sure if our Admin will allow direct $50 payment to your account.

Here's the Challenge Rules:
1. Must be a forum member for minimum of 6 months, live in the USA.
2. You must get the cuttings of the vine from me, so I will log your username.
3. I have the right to refuse to enter anyone (if you're on my No Sell list).
4. Winner: First person who gets the cuttings and grows the first fruit must PM me, and then post here a photo of the fruit. Let us know how it tastes.
5. Challenge will go for this year and 2024 until someone gets the fruit.
6. Any questions or clarification on the rules, please post here.

======================

If you want to get in on this Challenge, then you will need to get some cuttings from me so I can log down your name to be entered. Here's the For Sale (Free Cuttings). First come first serve for these cuttings. Once I run out, there will be no more.

https://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=50481.0

======================

I'll give additional information on this later tonight. Also will post some photos of the cuttings, size of small box and medium box cuttings.

======================

Here's are some pointers from Hoang on best method to root/graft the cuttings, and then once it grows into a vine, how to get fruits to set.

1. To root cuttings in a pot, use a mixture of coco mix/coir and potting mix. Ratio should be 4:1. Keep temperature above 60F. Should root in 2+wks.

2. I have also rooted these cuttings in jar of water, then moved them into a pot.

3. To graft cuttings, it can be grafted on passiflora (i.e. Frederick, Red Rover). Use scion cutting with 2-3 leaf buds. After attaching to rootstock, cover with a plastic bad. This worked fine for me with Hoang's p. decaisneana.

4. Best chance for fruit, if it flowers in July/August. To force flowers you can feed manure 1/2 feet away from vine trunk.

5. To set fruits, hand pollinate with P. alata, PQML, P.decaisneana. I tried hand pollination using its own pollen and it did not set fruit.

Looks like I’m in by default since I’m getting some cuttings. I want the Imperiale cuttings if I win.

Yes, I will let you choose one variety from my collection, no exceptions so you can get the Imperiale (Guglielmo_I- Italy), if you win.

I will not be selling any of these special varieties from my collection so this might be the only time for you to get a scionwood. The Guglielmo I & II has not been released here and only one other person in the US has Imperiale (Guglielmo I) that was gifted from me. Since all of these loquats have fruits on my tree, this summer I will update the brix table and post the results. Just got another new variety, Baiyu White Loquat in my collection, but this one is still not large enough to take cuttings.

Good Luck.

Until someone wins this challenge, I will call this variety ""Passiflora-quadrangularis - SQ"

The SQ is to dedicate it for the baby squirrel that fell out from the nest that was in my Roy pomelo treetop (15 ft high). I did not know the squirrel nest was located inside this vine and did not see it until I tugged on the vine from the ground, and I hear a shriek noise, and something fall down.

If no one wins this challenge, then I will keep the name.

any chance that the passionfruit is a hybrid?

i have a 1' seedling from a ruby glow fruit that was hopefully pollinated with caerulea.  i'm very curious how the fruit would turn out.

I don't know. I purchased it a while ago on ebay as a Lilikoi seedling plant, but it turns out to be a P. quadrangularis.

Last photo showing the size of my vine.

Still in the original pot I had it when it was a seedling plant.

Roy pomelo still in the original pot.

If anyone in this Challenge is thinking of collecting one of my loquats if they win, I may be able to send you either a cutting or a small grafted plant if I feel like it (time to graft one).

Special Note on Loquat Variety:
So, for anyone who is on this list, if you want the loquat "if you win", tell me what variety now so I can start a graft in my free time.

Highly unlikely I’ll win but my choice would be Imperiale as stated earlier.

If you win (get the first fruit to grow) then you will win the $, or the credit, or any choice of one of my loquat variety.

So, for anyone that thinks they will pick the loquat, send me a PM this month and I may start a small graft for you so when you collect, and it will be a grafted tree. Otherwise, if you claim the loquat later, you will get one cutting instead. I will update this table of contestants to show which variety you picked for your wish list (if you win). You will need to pay for the cost to ship

I think I have a take, grafted to edulis. The bottom graft is brown but this higher one looks green.

Yes I did a few, some are on edulis cuttings that are rooted in water. Also did cleft grafts. The size difference between the scions was hard though as well as the shape

I'll be honest, I completely forgot about these. I just threw them all into a jar with water. Most of them started to root and a few are pushing leaves.
How's everyone else's doing?
