The fruit is small maximum 2 cm , very juicy and sweet . Took me 4 years from seed .
Even in Brazil it is rare .

Roy

Thank you for all these links Roy .

The way Helton writes the name should be the correct one , the guy who discovered the plant is Mattos , so I guess E . MATTOSII it is . Double T , single S double I .

This plant should do well in Florida and maybe even California as it is from southern Brazil (Santa Catarina) where it can get quite cool in winter. Also because of the plant's small size should fruit very well in a pot.

I do believe in love at first sight.  When I saw this plant I fell in love...when I researched the plant more diligently, and got to know it's background, I fell even more for this plant.   (looks like a Rosemary bush crossed with a Cherry of Rio )

excellent choice for those who wish to push zone limits, or grow in containers...or who simply want an outstanding alternative to the more common Eugenias (grumixama, cherry rio, pitanga). The fruits are supposed to be sweet, succulent, and not resinous like other Eugenias, such as, Surinam Cherry.

Also, the person who this plant is named after happens to be one of my heroes!  Mattos, described a whole bunch of very important Myrciaria species back in 1976, (such as white jabo, M. aureana, and crowned jabo, M. coronata).  If his namesake has been give to this plant, it's for good reason!  Eugenia mattosii is going to be very popular one day in the near future...just watch... ;)

It is almost unheard of that the describer name it after himself and the publishers' referees don't usually let this pass.Matos may have discovered it and someone else could have described it.Field workers often have lab and uni associates that do the journal work often as a review of a group.

No no no, E. mattosii wasn't described by Mattos, I said it was given his namesake....Mattos described all of the very important Myrciaria back in 1976.

now I see what you're saying!  I didn't know that Mattos discovered E. mattosii, but I've just read that he did.
