I do believe in love at first sight. When I saw this plant I fell in love...when I researched the plant more diligently, and got to know it's background, I fell even more for this plant. (looks like a Rosemary bush crossed with a Cherry of Rio )
excellent choice for those who wish to push zone limits, or grow in containers...or who simply want an outstanding alternative to the more common Eugenias (grumixama, cherry rio, pitanga). The fruits are supposed to be sweet, succulent, and not resinous like other Eugenias, such as, Surinam Cherry.
Also, the person who this plant is named after happens to be one of my heroes! Mattos, described a whole bunch of very important Myrciaria species back in 1976, (such as white jabo, M. aureana, and crowned jabo, M. coronata). If his namesake has been give to this plant, it's for good reason! Eugenia mattosii is going to be very popular one day in the near future...just watch...
