Tropical Fruit Discussion / Visiting Florida late June. Suggestions?
« on: March 14, 2021, 09:31:06 PM »
Probably Stuart/west palm on June 19th & 20th. I plan to stop by AlexĎs place. Who else has mangos to taste? Excalibur? Possibly some local grocery stores with good selections?

Next weekend in the keys/Miami. Thereís a mango fest in key west I believe. Also fruit and spice park? Possibly Fairchild? But I think their tastings donít start till July.

Iím growing a hedge from 4 year old seedlings. Theyíre not much more than a foot tall. Some a fruiting heavily others lightly and some not at all. Iím guessing itís random or environmental and not genetic.

Picked this big boy just now. Twice the size of most I get. From a bush with not much fruit. Thinned effect I guess.

10
Red on left standard green on right. Slightly more complex flavor in the red. Smaller fruit.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Mulberry experiment in San Diego
« on: August 11, 2020, 04:49:13 PM »
I have ~20 mulberry seedlings from my Pakistan. Iím 95% sure they arenít from pollenization. Closest male is 2 miles away and every fruit had seeds in the top quarter of the fruit. Iím going to grow some up and see if they are clonal. Anyone want some seedlings to join in the experiment? No shipping please.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Trees that come back
« on: August 11, 2020, 04:43:31 PM »
I dug these up a couple months ago as deep as a spade would go, so about a foot deep. Neither was bigger than half an inch diameter though the roots were twice that. Both have returned quite vigorously.

Curry leaf dug up and replaced with longan. Has reappeared in four shoots.

This was a triple planted Marula  where I dug up two after approach grafting to the most vigorous. One coming back and now as tall as what I removed just a few months ago.

Do a lot of trees do this?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Arborists in San Diego that know fruit trees?
« on: November 06, 2019, 02:59:10 PM »
Especially Cherimoya. Friends tree just dropped a huge branch and she wants professional help.

23
Had it a few days ago. Nice mango. Strong Coconut flavor (but i've read in another thread http://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=17443.175that Pickering loses its pineapple if left on the tree). Some fiber around the seed. Originally had about 20 fruits in this first crop, but none of the rest grew larger than a golf ball. This one was tucked away under the leaves and reached an almost normal size.

Also, the tree is now flushing like crazy. Only really healthy mango tree i have out of half a dozen florida trees and dozens of seedlings i've planted.

24
I have a friend whoís brother went nuts in her yard starting 7yrs ago. Sheís cleaning up and getting rid of dozens of trees. Most mature. Plum and loquats would make great rootstocks. Fig and bananas are good but she doesnít know variety.
