Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Mango flavor . . .
« on: June 16, 2021, 09:12:28 PM »

That's just some some further perspective on my search for a mango-flavored mango.  Fortunately one of the three mango culitvars I'm growing is 'Beverly'.  (The other two are 'Ice Cream' and 'Irwin'.)

Thanx again All . . .

Paul M.
Isn't Irwin a "classic" mango?
Have you eaten any yet?
It looks like you have two classics already

I live close to Top Tropicals and I picked up an order of seeds from the store last
year for someone in New zealand that insisted on getting it.
The seeds look like pond apple seeds to me and I kept a couple but I forgot
about them until you posted this.
The employee who came out and gave me the seeds said it's not that great of fruit?

This is what I use

It wont hurt to let it dry and stay on as long as you spray in the morning or evening
or on plants not in direct sun.
I also used it on jaboticabas along with pepper plants. Like someone else said the fly
seems to only go on plants in indirect sunlight. I think the label said use a teaspoon for
a pint.

I had some on the tomatoes  also and were infested the most. I got rid of them and sprayed all my fruit plants with an organic mint castile soap and pure cold pressed need oil. It worked really well but I burnt up 2 small guava seedlings and burnt the leaves on the caimito but didn't lose them. They seem to be in check though. Oh and Also used sticky yellow traps work well to cat h the adults. Plus the family of small lizards that do miracles out there.
I used unscented Castile soap I got from Wal Mart. I used it once and it took care of
them for a while but I saw a You tube video and they suggested 3 treatments 2 weeks apart
I had a thai pepper plant and after the one treatment it put out new growth and had more
peppers and it was in real bad shape

Fertilizer leeches out over time and becomes less beneficial.
Most stores have a sale once a year to get rid of the old stuff.
See if you can find a date on it and if its over a year I would use it up.

Nice score.  Isn't the yellow supposed to be sweeter than the red?

They are real juicy and yes very sweet.
I had one years ago that had a gold/purple color fruit and they were bitter and
I got rid of the tree. I really like my red but this one might beat it

I have noticed this hogg plum growing alongside a road the past
couple months. Finally the fruit colored up and I got a couple today.
They are super sweet mostly juice inside. Really tasty!
I will get cuttings of this for sure

11 months later and I decided not to stake it and let it do it's thing

Look at the stems

roblack  The front mango's stem is turning brown and is ready now or in 1-2 days

bovine421   The stems are green turning yellow, they haven't filled out either  yours need a couple weeks

Weiss613  Many of yours are ready. You have hundreds on your trees Pick one and
let it soften a couple days. You need an expert to tell you that? You won't be sorry
and you won't be dissappointed.

I had 6 last year on my tree. This year the cold got my flowers and
the tree didn't produce. The fruit wasn't huge but I noticed the shoulders
filled out and they turned a little yellow. I watch the stems and they turned
brown and I like to gently lift the fruit sideways. If it's ready they pop off
the stem. I was real worried also but the first fruit came off easy and I let
it sit a couple days and it was ready. It was the best mango I have ever eaten.
I envy both of you waiting on your fruit to ripen. I didn't share those 6 mangos.

Great seeds and seller!

How is the taste and production on Nelita?
The nelita is only 2 1/2 years old and had a small batch of flowers/fruits
in the Spring. The fruit was very good and it has a few flowers on it now

One out of my two trees is also flowering for the first time.
I read somewhere they fruit year round?

Maybe ONG refers to the nursery in California?
Ok that's the easy part. I did look up ONG's website and called the number unsuccessfully.
There is no mention of this type on the website either

I got some scions this year and one of them was labeled Ong's Golden
I assume atemoya. Can anyone tell me what this is? The scion seems like
it took and I can't find any info on it?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Airlayer fruit tree
« on: May 23, 2021, 09:46:12 PM »
I have had the best luck airlayering in the Spring. If you airlayer a branch
I would cut off the flowers so the energy is used for developing roots.
Last Spring I airlayered a longan and picked branches without flowers
and I was 5 for 5. I tried it in the end of Summer the year before and
was 2 for 5.
I never airlayered a barbados cherry but I have rooted cuttings in damp
dirt. It took about 2 months to root but I was 3 for 3.
