Wow, that's close spacing! I have some spots in the yard I can dedicate to that type of spacing, so may follow your lead. Thanks for the info!

Not a smart idea to plant at that spacing.

What’s the minimum distance you can plant in the dooryard and have a healthy, productive tree?

2
I plant seedlings in the ground and let them do their thing. Two or three trees in close proximity, 2ft apart or in a row 5ft apart. I have never fruited jakfruit in a pot.

Brandon, were all your experimental seedlings grown in containers or in the ground? If in containers, what was the setup like (i.e., container size, soil type, fertilizer regimen)?

Thanks!

Can you post photos?

Can you guys recommend a place where I can purchase inexpensive containers in various sizes to grow different trees? Like the ones in nurseries? I’ve checked Home Depot numerous times but they don’t have ones that are in 7, 15, 25 Gallons and the ones they do carry are expensive and don’t seem conducive to growing fruit trees. Thanks!

Highly recommend Bangkok Lemon. Tried Blackgold, Amber, J-31 and Bangkok Lemon..Bangkok lemon for me tasted far superior. Got the fruit from a member here, his tree looks very productive and is not as vigorous as they say, probably was 12- 15ft tall after 7-8yrs and loaded with fruits.

I tried J31 years ago and remember it being excellent. Where did you purchase yours??

I have room for 1 tree in my yard and would like recommendations for very productive Jackfruit varieties. I live in Miami. Any recommendations for thick fleshed varieties that will fruit heavily? Thanks!

Just tasted a Coconut Cream Mango for the first time, purchased at Truly Tropical in a mixed bag of mangos. Was not good. Tasted coconut but no sweetness at all, almost tasted like dirty water. I let it ripen on the counter for a few days after purchasing it and seemed to be ripe. Is that the normal taste??

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Is breadfruit worth growing?
« on: June 03, 2020, 07:20:49 AM »
Hello everyone, as the title implies I am interested in breadfruit. My HOA seems to be allowing people to plant some trees in the front of the house giving me access to a larger in-ground planting space, and I was thinking of breadfruit as one of the options. Unlike most of my other options I don't know much about breadfruit. I ask the question because its not really a fruit that you eat as a fruit. But I am very interested in self sufficiency and breadfruit seems like a good source of food.  So, I ask the question, is this tree really worth growing or should I instead plant something like a cecropia or longan?

They taste like nothing. You can get them cheap at your local Hispanic market. Plant something with taste such as papaya or star fruit

Zach, are you buying them online with no pics or picking them yourself? If, you're picking them, then it's on you. If you're buying a specific tree that is larger, then you have a claim. Otherwise, it's buyer/beware.

No, I purchased all from Excalibur. Because of Covid, they don’t let anyone inside to pick out trees, you need to call in advance, place the Order and then when you arrive someone brings to your car (sometimes they don’t speak English)

If they are grafted then you should get success with container growing.  Otherwise I would get them in the ground ASAP to get them established and maturing as it will be many years before fruit.  On the subject of nurseries I get my stock from Pine Island Nursery where they are always top quality trees.

Thanks for the info. They are all grafted. I’m having work done on my backyard so I don’t want o plant anything back there and then have to remove them down the road. Was hoping I could keep some in containers even if I need a whiskey barrel. Just want production

In my experience, Excalibur and all of their Employees that I was with were amazing. Been there over 40 times now and I have nothing but good memories.

Its unfortunate to see that not everyone is having a great experience because I recommend this place 100%

In fact i'm actually kind of surprised that you apparently got a small plant. Almost every plant I bought from there were huge for each gallon size, some even had roots outside of the container!

Unfortunately I had the exact opposite experience. They couldn’t even email or call me back. The plants stunk. Weak and small. Truly Tropical is much better as well as Pine Island.

Imo Excalibur is the best for most if not all tropical plants that they sell.

First time I went there, they had a tiny lychee in a 3 gallon with 3 fruits on it.   Plus if you buy them from any random place you could get one that is not grafted or air layered, which means that it will take 10 years or more to fruit.

In regards to the original question, I too am very interested in knowing if a Longan would fruit in a container.

I’m sure they have a great selection but the customer service is terrible. Every tree that I purchased they are either in a three or 7 gallon container was falling over and belongs in a container smaller than that. I’ve emailed multiple times,  I’ve called regarding 2 Jackfruit trees that could not stand on their own and I could not see the graft, not a single person called me back or returned an email. They sold me papaya, lychee and Longan  that were supposedly 3 gallons, but they were less than a foot tall and belonged in a 1 gallon container. Nevertheless, it’s better to go to other nurseries.

Can’t help with your question, but I’m interested in purchasing a lychee. Would you mind sharing where you got them?  :)

I bought them at Excalibur in Lake Worth. They were extremely small in a 3 gallon container and probably should have sold to me as a 1 gallon. I think you can get Lychee trees at most decent nurseries. I would not recommend Excalibur anymore after the last few trees I purchased not to mention the customer service is a joke. Go elsewhere

I Purchased 2 Mauritius lychee trees in 3 gallon containers and 2 Biew Kiew Longans. I don’t have much space in my yard anymore and wanted to ask you guys if anyone had success growing them in containers? I don’t mind putting them in very large containers eventually but I just want a decent amount of production. I live in Miami, has anyone had success with these 2?

Jackfruits can fruit in a container no problem, but they should be pruned from time to time. In my experience Mai III jackfruit is the best for what you are looking for.

Thanks for your response. Have you had this variety?

Hi Guys
I want to plant a Jack in ground and one in a container. Which variety is most prolific? A crunchy sweet texture that will produce a lot of fruit, since I only have room for one of them I want it to produce the most fruit that I can. Also- I’ve seen fruiting jacks at Excalibur; does anyone have jackfruits in containers which produce for you? I live in North Dade.

Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Trees that thrive in small spaces
« on: May 14, 2020, 12:35:27 PM »
I would say papaya too provided you aren't worried about neighbors snagging the fruit. It will help add a more tropical look to your yard as well.

Figs in large parts of FL have issues due to the soil harboring a very virulent species of nematode. Even resistant varieties will fail. There are ways around this like planting in a 5 gallon bucket with the bottom cut out so its below the 12 or so inches the nematodes live in. Not sure if that applies to far south FL, but certainly in most of Central.

Carambola gets big and bushy and again, if you don't mind people snagging the fruit, it would work too I think.

Thanks! I am having work done on the backyard so I don’t want to plant anything yet. I was thinking Papaya since it’s not technically a tree and won’t really grow wide, but rather just straight up.

I don't know about Florida, but Figs do well here when their roots are truly constrained (but they need to be surrounded by tough concrete otherwise they just break the containment) -- they sometimes even produce more when they can't spread their roots.

Good to know. I was actually planning to keep the fig in the pot.

I have a small space to plant a Fruit Tree directly in front of my house in between the front and the driveway. I have the following trees sitting in containers and wanted advice as to which would thrive the best in a small space where the roots won’t grow too much: Atemoya, Carambola, Fig and Papaya.

Thanks!!

Sugar apples and atemoya’s do great in containers, delicious fruit and quick to bear make them some  of the best fruit trees to grow in florida

I have an Atemoya that I purchased in a 3 gallon and it’s about 5 feet tall. How many fruits do you think an Atemoya in a large container will produce?

23
I grow several Avocados in containers. I just ordered a Pakistan Mulberry that I will be growing in a 1/2 wine barrel like I do with my avocado trees.

How many avocados do you get per tree in a container?

24
Usually any airlayer semi dwarf trees make good candidates to fruit in containers. Figs, Longan, Wax Jambu, and others. A lot of Eugenia species do well in containers as well. Production wise it is very hard to beat a fig in a container. Blueberries do well in containers as well. Cacti fruits can produce reasonable yields in containers.

Thanks for the info. What about Lychee or Starfruit??

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Fruit Trees that do well in Containers

I have the following trees sitting in front of my house in 3 gallon containers: Mauritis Lychee, Carambola, Longan, and Atemoya. I have very limited yard space and was wondering if anyone knew which (if any) of these would do well and produce well in a container?
