First time tasting fresh Jackfruit
« on: May 06, 2012, 12:20:36 PM »
Thought i'd post up some pictures from yesterday. Kevin(CoPlantNut) and I took a grafting workshop and on his way up he brought a whole jackfruit for Ashley and I to try. We've only ever tasted it in a can.

I call it a "Beautifully Ugly" fruit :-)

It was incredibly fragrant! And practically speaking zero latex!

Ashley and I eating while we go  ;D

Most of the harvest pulled out..and one of our pugs, Charlie onlooking with a little drool lol

And the end result of all that hard work

Verdict: absolutely LOVED it! wish we had more oppurtunity to try other, and home grown varieties. Some day we when we have a house and a greenhouse we plan on having a small tree. For now we'll just have to settle for the 10 seeds i planted from this fruit  8)

Enjoy!

I assume you will boi,l roast or add the seeds to stews and the like.Green ones are pretty good in curries and a few other dished. If you get too much flesh it is perfect for drying and taste excellent.

Thanks for the kind words everyone! And I was just going to ask what to do with all the seeds. I set aside 10 to plant just for fun :-)

Boil the jackfruit seeds in salted water for 45-60 minutes, until quite soft.  You need to peel the seeds before eating.  Add salt or seasoning to taste. Tastes very nice, like a roasted chestnut. Very high in protein. The broth cooking water will also be very tasty. If you peel a bunch of seeds you can also run them through a cuisinart and make a nice puree that tastes like mashed potatoes.
That fruit looks fully ripe. One of the rare photos posted here where a jackfruit was actually ripe to my eyes, hence no latex.
Suggestion: if you want to save seeds don't cut clear through the fruit, as you will ruin many of the seeds. Cut 1/8 section slices longitudinally from the outside, and peel the exterior skin to pull out individual sections.

Congrats on the awesome 1st experience, Luke.  Time to get crackin' on the greenhouse buddy...
Like Oscar suggested, boiling them in salted water does the trick for us as well.  If you think boiled jackfruit seeds are tasty, wait till you try boiled Durian seeds  ;D ;D ;D
