My new mango tree in Canada!
« on: May 07, 2012, 05:12:13 PM »
Hi guys!

I just picked up my new mango tree from flora exotica close to 7 feet tall. It gotted some old bloom spykes, but no fruit :( hopefully, it might bloom again this summer. I have a question the tree is really high I would like to prune it back to the pink tape that you will see in the picture. Is it a good idea or I should leave it like that?

Here's some pictures

Beautiful healthy tree, what variety is it?
Grow mainly fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

Depends what your growing conditions are, I assume its inside or in a greenhouse. I would probably then focus on keeping it small. I would wait a little longer to prune perhaps until the growth flush hardens off, and the trunk diameter benefits from the increased photosynthesis. Maybe do it in the fall (close to the time you place it indoors).
Grow mainly fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

Hi Sam

That's a beautiful looking Carrie. I wish Mimosa had a Carrie like your when I bought mine 2 years ago. It might bloom again but you are probably be better off if it flushed a few times by the end of summer. Good luck and keep us posted.

That's a really nice and healthy tree! Congrats! I won't comment on whether you should prune it or not especially since you're growing it in Canada... of course if it was mine and since I'm in FL I would prune it only because I do like my trees on the smaller side (more dwarf)..but that's my personal preference.

I do agree that you might want to wait till the leaves harden off before you prune...although I've "tip" pruned mine before they've hardened off also. Good luck!

Thanks guys, I just need to make it stay that size and it would be okay. I may cut near the pink tape next month for size control. I have a malika too ,but it got insects and got sunburn this month. I decided that I needed to pug it. It looked very unhealthy, after two weeks growth came out, but dried out and became black quickly, so I pugged it again right above the other ring of buds. Is there anything I can d to save it? The trunk is still green ,so I know it's alive.

Puglr, thank you, I think I don't need to tip it, since it bloomed and where the bloom spykes came off, some new branches grew. This is the new growth we see right now.

Samuel -I'll throw an opinion out if no one else wants to - Don't prune it!
You have such long brrrrrrrr winters that your healthy growth will be limited to half
a year, in my opinion.  You can always prune it when it reaches the ceiling.

You have so many challenges in your climate, why take away any hard-earned
growth that is already there to support the tree 's health?

Anyway, my soap box wants to kick me off now.....

Good luck no matter what you do....

Nice tree and lots of luck. You are one serious northern mango dude. You are working against difficult conditions so good luck. Why not look for a university greenhouse that will be willing to let your mango tree live there during the winter?
