Butia eriospatha
« on: March 11, 2016, 01:43:44 PM »

This palm grows in the Botanical garden of Buenos Aires Argentina. 30 years ago i used to eat the delicious fruit. However the palm did not have any tag with the name. I supposed it was butia capitatata. However the taste it was completely different. This was a mix between pinapple and mango
.My father just send me this picture saying that now the palm has the tag saying Butia eriospatha. I read all the information available  everybody loves the flavour. It grows naturally in the hills of Rio de Janeiro, that is why grows well in Buenos Aires cooler temperatures.

I've been told, but not confirmed, that you can find Eriospatha in landscapes around Southern California. I have not tasted the fruit, but do have a seedling.

Thanks for the info. I read it takes 7 years to fruit. It s going to be worthy the wait. My father collected some seeds and I am waiting for any family member visit.

Dennis Sharmahd here in San Diego is breeding eriospatha and has some interesting results including a low fiber one and another that bears multiple crops throughout the year. He ate fruit from it yesterday. I think he's in his 2nd or 3rd generation.

I got one from Dennis at Festival of Fruit.  Hasn't grown a lot yet, but made it through a NorCal winter.

Yes. Question is does he ship. I'll let you know when he gets back to me.

Btw, I was reading a bit on eriospatha and apparently you can tell it apart from odorata/capitata by its hairy spathes (vs. the smooth ones of odorata). Should be coming up soon so keep your eyes pealed :)

Can't tell from photo, but i'm wondering if it's not really Butia yatay instead of eriospatha? I know yatay is popular in northern Argentina. I have one growing and it'as a beautiful palm, but very slow growing.

Hopefully the staf from the botanical gardeen of Buenos Aires didn't do it wrong. They put a tag with the name. But I think that is eriospatha because I triyed many butias before. But never one as sweet as this one. And I couldn 't resolve for 30 years. My dad in buenos aires told me that now has the tag. First time I hear butia eriosphata.
