My Sweetheart Lychee flowering
« on: February 06, 2012, 06:03:16 PM »
I planted a 15 gal 5' tall airlayered sweet heart lychee about 4-5 months ago. It did not go thru any growth flush but now what I thought was numerous sprouts of growth is turning out to be flowering.

Is it normal for tree to not push any leaves but get flower directly? I see the same thing on my Alphonso mango which is flowering in its first flush, planted about the same time.

Very normal for a grafted or airlayered tree this time of year.

Harry, thanks for the reply, will the fruits survive with no leaves? OR will the tree sprout some leaves as well?

I have Longan that is continuing to push more growth, hope it flowers here soon as well.

No leaves......or no new leaves?  If there are no leaves, I would doubt that the fruits would hold or gain any real size.  Further leaf growth, once the fruiting began would be stopped or slowed severely.

Your Lychee has existing leaves right? If it does, I would not worry to much.
Grow mainly fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

it has few leaves, not a whole lot, when it flowers, those leaves would be minority, LOL

Lets see what happens. its a 2-yr old air layer is what I was told and guaranteed to fruit. lets see how it goes.

it seems a little unusual that it would be 5ft tall with very few leaves.

If it was my tree, I would prune off the flowers to concentrate energy on the leaves.

I am afraid in doing so I might kill the tree. I want to see what this plant does though. I will post pictures tomorrow so you all can see. I burried it deep 12" into the ground (the pot height) and it sticks up about 4.5 feet. One thing for sure is that the airlayer that is now the stock is not too think or strong.

I would just leave the bloom because Lychee will naturally drop a lot  of its fruit if it feels it can't hold them.  If you prune the panicles and the new growth gets some cold weather, it may bloom again, using up more energy.
