Looking forward to them myself when we return to Sabah.  If possible my wife and I will try to sell seeds from the better pulasans we eat there.  They vary in quality.  There is a green (when ripe) type that is excellent.  Also looking forward to eating Klambuku again, the Nephelium to the far right.  It looks like a rambutan but I am quite certain it is a different species.  Tree has different leaves and different form.  The fruits are also very different from a rambutan.  Klambuku is rare in Tenom.  Does it exist in West Malaysia?  How about green pulasans in West Malaysia?

Klambuku only exist in Sabah and by my opinion it is endemic. While there is green pulasan grown in West Malaysia, but in recent years
the green pulasan fruit is quite hard to find.

Probably not Seebabat. The Seebabat fruits are very dark red-brown, almost black in color when fully ripe. BTW the Seebabat is listed in the book by Ochse on East Indian fruits Java,(Indonesia) already in 1920, so it is a very old cultivar.

You're probably right and the klambuku is a different species. There are many look alikes in the Nephelium genus. Prosea book lists a bunch of them.

Among popular clones for pulasan here - 1. Clone Ah Hock ( Hock 94 ),  2. Clone P28 ( Pulasan Temerloh ).

Definitely one of my favorite fruits. Like Harry mentioned, a fine Pulasan is one of the best fruits in the world. I prefer them over Mangosteens any day!

meritam is the Malaysian language word for pulasan.  In Sabah, it is maitom.  One name obviously comes from the other, but not sure which came first.

The testa (seed skin) does not come off on a klambuku either.

Go to the Milk n Honey farm around september-october. They have plenty of killer pulasans at that time. Some of their trees are definitely better than others.

I think if I had endless orchard space I would plant some hehehe... and ive tried some good juicy ones, that are somewhat like lychee but maybe a bit more sub acid flavor... good flavor... but i'd rather plant a lychee :)

I guess the upside to pulasan and rambutan is they fruit more regularly than most lychee varieties?

I also like lychee better than seebabat pulasan, but just by a tad. Yes pulasan is a more regular bearer than lychee, especially on wet east side of Big Island.

http://www.montosogardens.com/nephelium_ramboutan_ake.htm

I suspect the darkest ones in pix are hawaiin selection UH and the heavy bearing bright red Australian selection I used to see from Daintree  is Carle.Sibabat is probably the large common dark red one that is everywhere and I bet the Malaysian types are a big diversity of good quality types.
That clip is interesting in spite of the terrible accent of the lady.Seeds are edible unlike rambutans.
