??? How the heck do you keep the deer from eating everything??

The mountain lions do an awesome job up here! Unfortunately my neighbors have lost their livestock here and there. When I see deer I chase them off and will also use a deer enforcer sprinkler if they're coming around frequently. We don't have many deer due to drought conditions as well.

Cool pic's Kevin, looks like your putting plants in the ground now very nice. Is your PH low because of Oaks that grew all in that area? Plants are looking great! 8)

Thanks Robert! Yes, I went totally ham this year and put as many things in the ground as would survive. It's the right thing to do for the plants, they had all outgrown even 25g pots or just do best in the soil overall. I even tore out lots of my landlord's succulent garden and replaced it with fruiting plants. I count over 60 fruiting trees / bushes I put in the ground in the last year alone.

I don't know if I'll ever get the chance to buy the property but I will thank myself in the future for doing this if the chance comes up.

Re: acidity. I tested the soil awhile back and it was alkaline. There haven't been any oaks in the planting area(s) shown for a long time. Our well water is 8.4 so I am always always always battling the akalinity. Go through around 60lb of sulphur a year and lots of phosphoric acid for fertigation

Your home seems like a very special place surrounded by nature.  You've done a great job incorporating your plants, they all look healthy and like they're meant to be there.  Thank you for sharing, I always love seeing other people's gardens.  Hope you have an abundant harvest soon.

Janet

I am so very lucky to live on this property which is in the middle of the Los Padres national forest. I don't own it, but who knows... Maybe one day I'll get the chance. It's amazing.

That was great, even more amazing seeing your photos from along the way and seeing how big everything is now!

Hi Kevin, should have asked before does Nelita prefer slightly acidic soil like the jabos? Haven't been able to find much info. Thanks in advance!

Nelita an calycina is not PH sensitive like jabos in my experience. They drink up my 8.3ph and don't get too chlorotic. I will occasionally throw a handful or two of sulphur pellets if I see the leaves getting skeletal looking but overall, not bad.

If you want to go effortless route, take a look at ez-flo mainline injection system or dosatron injector. With ez-flo add liquid or water soluble fertilizer in the tank and be done with entire season, or feed on demand with dosatron. I have both and they are working flawlessly since 2018.

https://ezfloinjection.com/product/ez-flo-main-line-1-5-gallon/
https://www.qcsupply.com/120603-dosatron-d14mz2-injector.html

Do you prefer the Dosatron or EZFlo? I am in the market for one for a PH adjustment.

While this is a high quality method of watering for expensive or sensitive crops and plants, this is way overkill for guava. I just throw down whatever slow release fertilizer I have on hand all over the plant and water in.

Guava is not PH sensitive like other plants.

You're spending a lot of time and money doing what you're doing, and could skip it.

Also, warning on the hose filter, they are so effective sometimes that they remove too much calcium and your plants will suffer because of it. This is especially evident with tomatoes.

The scions from the China plants that I grafted onto Myrica californica have officially surpassed the plants we imported from China. They are much more vigorous, and appear to be healthier.  I'm thinking that I have gotten about a 60% take rate on scions but still gonna hold out. Some of them have a good couple inches of growth so I'd Imagine those are takes.  Others flushed, died back and are flushing again, making me think they were growing on stored energy but have now officially taken.

Note to future purchasers. Graft immediately onto new rootstocks.

Absolutely seems the way to go. I now probably have lost my last female biqi and only have 1/4 remaining, the male biqi. That still may be useful, but wish I'd just gone ham grafting like you Nate. Good info for the next buy!

A large Rollinia promptly died during my 9b winter (RIP buddy). It's a no go for me for anything but cherimoya and atemoya me thinks.

This is what 8-3-9 does when you spread it a couple of times a year.
This is the third time I had to heavily prune the guava. It's already about to hit the ceiling.

Guavas are all ridiculous growers for me. They often go from 1g to 15g in one year if potted. I'm giving up on a lot of them for container culture and putting them in ground.

Re: flowers, they flower off new and old growth so pinching shouldn't effect flowering much. I do the same for most plants, I prefer a bushy look that holds the fruit better. Long spindly arms = too heavy and lean over with fruit

Get a 12x12x48 box. Bring some tape so it move around, cover top of pot with paper and tape so not to lose soil.  Gently drop into box without breaking branches. Reinforce corners so not to crushbox. Check in with luggage. Consult with wonderfruit on how tall plant with pot, just in case it needs to be bigger that 48 inches. Luck.

Is Wonderfruit a nursery or location? I tried messaging the user on here and no response.

My guavas eat anything and aren't picky. I admit to being really lazy with them and just using slow release citrus avo 6-4-6 granules by the handful every month during growing season. I'll throw a bag of chicken manure on in the spring and also use organic fertilizers if I have them on hand but certainly will say they don't care much.

I'll be in FL in July and would like to buy some. Where can I buy them in person?

Visit wonderfruit with a sized box and send yourself a Luc’s Garcinia.

Was that the person who posted something like 900 Luc's for sale on here in a bulk deal? I would love to send or carry plants back home, does anyone have advice on what they did?

I have pushed this trip back into July, from the 7th to the 10th landing in Miami. I hope to hit the Fairchild Mango Festival, Fruit and Spice Park, and a few backyards if others are willing! Really looking forward to it. My first trip to FL.

Our mulberries seem to be behind others in California.  Got to taste a few side by side this week of the fruit grown at our farm in Fallbrook.  Red Himalyan DMOR9 was probably the sweetest, flavor seemed similar to Black Pakistan but fruit was skinnier, less juicy.  Dwarf everbearing was very bland with small fruits, I'm going to remove the plant.  Thai dwarf was my husband's favorite, and we all thought it was good.  Earlier fruit was not as sweet, but this current crop is sweet and acid and tastes the most like a blackberry and the fruits are firm.  I love this plant.  Planted as a small 1 gallon rooted cutting last year and already about 8 feet tall and producing an abundant crop.  Looks like buds are forming already for another round.  Not sure why others in SoCal think it is bland, I'm going to start a lot more plants at the farm so there's plenty for the birds and us. The Thai Dwarf at my home garden in Laguna Beach also gets sweet even without the warm temps, our highs have only been in the 60's most of the spring.  Only got a couple Sahararanpur that were ripe, most are still green, it was very sweet with different flavor than the DMOR9.  I have read that Saharanpur, White Pakistan, and Australian green are the same, but the leaves on my White Pakistan are definitely different than the Sahararanpur.  It hasn't fruited yet to compare the fruits.  Still have several more varieties I'm trialing.  Noir de Spain has only started to leaf out a couple of weeks ago.  Buds on the Noir de Spain are noticeably different looking than all the other mulberries I grow.  Didn't take any pics.

Janet

Mine are really far behind others. I was eating handfuls of perfect sweet pakistani off my gf's family tree which I planted last year. Mine are still totally green on pak/himalayan. I had a King White batch earlier in the season and the tree is loaded but has stayed green for weeks. We need the heat and luckily it has finally arrived today and into the next week! Now hopefully the birds and rats don't get them...

Photos of my lamb hass from last night

Excuse its raggedy look, I just planted it a week ago - we had random 36f weather two nights in a row out of nowhere. Been watering it a lot to try to make it not so stressed.

I just had my first surinam cherry. Does anyone prefer the red variety over the darker hue varieties? Seems like everyone likes the darks more

Red gets a bad rap but I like them just the same really. Even a tart pitanga is tasty to me.

I am looking to buy No Mai Tsze, Sweetheart and Emperor lychee tree in southern California area if anyone has them.  Please shoot me a PM.

Champa usually has a stack of emperor and sweetheart in stock, call ahead to confirm.

I might in search for some as well. Received this as lamb Hass but doesn't look like it to me. Anyone tell what kind of avocado this is?

Not sure if all the same tree, but the lowest photo looks like my lamb hass I bought. The wiggly leaf edge is what I am noting is the same.

K-Rimes: is your Lamb Hass has red fleckles on stems?

Will check when I get home

Yes I am looking for cuttings to root. They seem to root fairly easy and fruit fast from cuttings or seed. Yes they are a different genus.

I am in 8b/9a and some will do great outside here from what I read. However I do research on Musa and have a lot of greenhouse space for the more tropical types.

I would love buy some of your large sweet cream guava cuttings! Any growing or rooting advice would be amazing also. I’m totally new to guava and most other tropical fruit trees. However I’m already quite addicted lol.

Fair warning that in my 9b area, lemon, strawberry and pineapple guava do great - all the rest of the standard "tropical" guava kinda get destroyed every winter and frost nips the newest branches back.
