Mango Tree frozen in time.
« on: November 05, 2021, 05:05:59 PM »
I have a glenn mango which refuses to flush. It has a thousand little nubs which are the precursors to a flush, but it won't flush. It's been like this for a few months now. Is this normal? I'm curious more than anything. The tree looks healthy otherwise.

How big of a tree is your Glenn?
It may be getting ready to push flowers?
Usually cooler weather is important but less water and
daylight hours also influence flowering. Several of my smaller
trees are still pushing new growth now. I hope it hardens before
any cold weather.

The tree is 6'-8' tall. They're not pannicles. All my other trees flushed, but this one is hesitating.

I have no answers as to why your Glenn is doing that, but I'm in the same boat with my PPK. Every year the tips of branches swell with buds, and by the time I've lost all hope, it pushes its one flush a year. I thought the spot it was originally planted in was the problem, so relocated the tree, and it did the same thing in the new location. I planted a seedling in the original spot the PPK was in, and it, like all my other mango trees, had multiple flushes of new growth this past season.

Maybe we got bum rootstock or bum scions? Either way, it's frustrating.

I had that problem with several trees over the years (Glenn, Oro Negro, Brogdon, Sweet Heart, ...) I give it a year and if it doesn't perform it's out of my yard. Usually the replacement does well (same kind, same variety, same spot). Not always sure why this happens, but about 1 out of 10 simply don't thrive. Some might got damaged during transport or planting. Dog urine is very toxic to plants. Over fertilized? Poor drainage/soil conditions, ... I had one bad spot where nothing would do well. Not sure why, maybe someone dumped some toxic chemicals decades ago.

Thank you for the replies.

The tree started off extremely strong. I had a few flushes the first year, as well as panicles and fruit.

I'll give it some more time. No rush or anything.

I have a Maha that did same since Spring.  Cogshall too.
Couple weeks ago i started spraying all trees with Neem 1oz/gal every few days cause i got what looks like Sri Lanka weevils eating Raw Honey.
Did nothing for weevils but Cogs & Maha sprouted it's buds last week! Hurray!  :)

I have a young Maha that has those little growth nubs too since mid-Summer. The tree did have a couple of good growth flushes prior to that however.

It's a young tree and I'm patient.

How often do you water your glenn?

I found extra water really got my young mangos pushing new growth
