I'm finally gearing up to get things in ground next spring, essentially having spent the last year sampling fruit, getting small trees, and prepping my yard. I have space for four medium-large trees, and two small-medium left in my garden plan. I know I don't need to fill every spot I've mapped immediately, but I'm kind of a plan twice dig once gardener. So now that this year's mango season is wrapping up does anyone have recommendations for what to look into sampling/buying next year beyond what I already have?
This is what I already have (or have on order):
Buttercream
Cecilove
Coconut Cream
Dwarf Hawaiian
Fruit Punch
Harvest Moon
Honey Kiss
Ivory
Little Gem
Mun Kun Si
Nam Doc Mai #4
Orange Sherbet
Pickering
Pina Colada
Seacrest/Triplesec
ST Maui
Sugarloaf
Sweet Tart
Zill M-4
Zill P-22
Zill 3-18 'Honey'
Zill 40-17
Zill 40-26
So far Carla, Peach Cobbler, and Venus are on a short list for possible additions. Ones I tried and for sure didn't enjoy were PPK, Guava (Sein Ta Lone), Irwin, and Zill.
I'm also growing non-mangos (loquat, sugar apple, sapodilla, jaboticaba, mulberry, persimmon, banana, figs, etc) but I'm rather particular about food textures so I'm afraid I'm not as adventurous on that front.
I’d have to say sweet tart…cac was pretty good also but some tasted bad it just depended on ripeness
Honey kiss hit well
As well as m-4 probably my favorite one although not sweet as sweet tart
Mango manor said Fruit Cocktail.Who's "mango manor?" Never mind. I found his YouTube channel. He puts rocks around his trees. That's weird.
Hello all!
My 2-year old Cogshall finally gave us fruit this year and boy oh boy! We got mango craze - I be never been a big fan of mangos (store bought that is) but eating mango off your own tree is something else 😋
So now we want to extend our mango season and because of space limitations I decided on Pickering for July mangos and can’t decide whether to get Honey Kiss or Keitt for late season.
Both great producers, Keitt is later than Honey Kids, but I’ve read Honey Kids taste is superior.
Honey Kiss footprint is smaller, but Keitt with right pruning can be kept rather small too.
Not afraid of pruning - already have 8 mulberries lol
So what do you think?
We are not huge mango snobs, but having mangos in September is very appealing, hence Keitt is in the mix.
Thank you all!
P.s. I kind of want to plant now, prudent thing would be to wait until august and taste both Keitt and Honey Kiss from Truly Tropical in Delray but… itching to plant haha
