Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Is Angie a Top-Tier Mango?
« on: August 02, 2019, 02:31:50 PM »
I keep eating ‘em because Angie and Pickering are all I have right now. Some are very good (8 points out of 10).  Some not that good.  They all have the resinous off-flavor near the skin to some degree.  But the neighbors love ‘em!  Of the Pickerings and Angies I give them they all say they're the best mangos they've ever eaten.  I'd like to replace the tree with Orange Sherbet and Lemon Zest in the same hole, but will probably leave it for the next owner (to chop down and put in a swimming pool!)

Which one you say has a better taste angie or pickering?

I concur.  Sugar loaf defines 'the bomb'.  Its ripening window allows late eating.

To be fair to Alphonso though, perhaps 36-8 is superior to a Florida grown Alphonso...the jury not back on how India grown would compare head to head.

Do you know if super alphonso tree produces well in South Florida?

2019’s most exceptional were

1. Orange Sherbet
2. Coconut Cream
3. Zill Indochinese
4. Lemon Meringue
5. E4
6. P22
7. Lemon Zest
8. Guava
9. Taymour
10. Sweet Tart

Honorable Mention - in no particular order, these were excellent but in some cases I only had 1-2 fruit.
Beatrice
Yi Xuan
Cushman
Kryptonite
Ryan
Seacrest
Cac
Phoenix
Fruit Punch
Dupuis Saigon
Ice Cream
Super Alphonso

Would you happen to know which of these are the top producers of fruit?

230
Yooooooo, thanks for the list. Looking good, looks like I may need to get a coconut cream tree.  :o

231
Been busy. I will get to it this weekend.

Only had one Cotton Candy this year and it was immature. We were probably too early for it (no M4 either). Other than these, we probably hit everything on a dream list.

Does anyone have a link to the 2008 list?

232
1. Coconut Cream
2. Malika (how this is not in most people's top 5 is beyond me)
3. Pineapple Pleasure
4. Sweettart
5. Peach Cobbler (have yet to taste however)
6. PPK

-Jon

Tasted a Malika and was not impressed by it.

233
So we’ve officially come to our conclusion.

I’ll recap and countdown the top 10 for 2019, soon.

And the conclusion is?
Please post your top 20 mangoes.
Thx!

If you want productivity and a long season, Pickering and Angie definitely fit the bill.

Thank you, that sounds good too! How about kesar mango?

Kesar mango is awesome. One of my favs. Grows very well in FL, and is the best tasting Indian flavor mango I've had. Picked up a tree for myself and a good friend (both 3 gal) as a house warming gift less than 2 years ago. He harvested over a dozen fruits this year. Mine did not flower. Super delicious clean mangoes. A nice changeup from all the other flavors/mangoes we have been enjoying. Great texture too. The tree is pretty and the leaves look healthier than any of my other mango trees.

Cool, would you say it is a rather spicy sweet mango and resinous?

235
Narrowed it down to:

Coconut cream
Sugar loaf
Sweet tart
Pickering
Carrie
Kathy
Keitt

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: M4 or Sugar loaf?

I just bought a 25 Gallon M4 from Zill today.  I have a small 3 gallon E4 in the ground as well.  I can't comment on disease resistance, but from my research it seems to be a toss up as to which variety is preferred by forum members. Hence I purchased both.

Cool, hope it does well, how much did that 25 gallon cost you?
Did they have different sizes and for how much?

Thanks! Zill only sells to distributors. My best friend is a distributor so he hooked me up at no charge. But I think distribution price on 25gal mangos are in the low hundreds. Not sure what other sizes they had available. My father-in-law got a 65gal fruit punch for mid 300’s. Curious to see what that looks like

Curious as well, post some pictures!

1. Rosigold - earliest mango I have - decent flavor, good disease resistance and productive.
2. pickering - great little tree, earlier season, coconut flavor
3. LZ - love the fruit, haven't had too many issues with disease. Just make sure you spray the blooms with sulfur.
4. Sweet tart - Great flavor and productivity
5. Carrie - just one of my favorites flavorwise, always a healthy tree. sometimes good crops and sometimes small crops, but have 3 sources from my yard.
6. Honeykiss(productivity), M4(good coconut flavor) or Keitt(good size and very late) for late season mango.

Carrie is a great flavor of mango, spicy, rich, creamy and sweet.

Coconut Cream

Orange Sherbert

Sugarloaf/E4 and/or M4

Glenn

Kesar

Venus

Guava

Those should give you some great flavors, good production, and spread out harvest times.
Glenn and Venus as Top 7?  Really?

Is not always about flavor, productivity plays a major role.

Keitt, Venus and Glenn are great choices.

My pickering gave up its last fruit the first week of July, fruit is medium sized. Definitely NOT my fave mango.
Does your tree get full sun?  Does your fruit get the blotchy red blush?  You need those factors to bring out the full potential of Pickering.  Otherwise the fruit will be less sweet and not as fine-flavored.  I ate one this morning that was honey-sweet and outstanding.

Ca you describe the flavors? Is it Coconuty?

245
I always try to have a Pickering available,  when someone in the family or a friend asks me for a good mango tree to put in their yard,  I'll hand them a Pickering.  size, reliability, precociousness and flavor.

Pickering is it an early or mid season producer?  How big is the fruit?

M4 or Sugar loaf (E4) mango?

Which of the two would you plant if you could only select one.

Considering:
Production
Growth habit
Fruit size & durability

We all know both taste great. Tasted a sugar loaf and was amazed about the explosion of flavors.

Yes, Pickering is an easy winner for ease of care, production from a small tree which remains healthy, fruit size, pleasant appearance, disease resistance, and good-eating texture.  Pickering's flavor is widely appreciated as satisfactory/good enough; I haven't heard of anyone's actively disliking it; some persons give the flavor rave reviews--- even as their "number-one mango."

Thanks, pickering is also in consideration.  Do you know anything about the fruit production on M4 or sugar loaf?

248
If it was my yard I will definitely plant a Pickering , and maybe plant 3 Trees in 1 Hole 👍

Good luck .

Ed

Pickering is on my list, how does sugar loaf or M4 fare on the fruit production?

I have never noticed coconut flavor in any mango.

I much prefer M-4 over Coconut Cream and over E-4/Sugarloaf.  I don't think the flavors of any of these resemble each other.

How is the production of fruit on M4?
