Planted 15gal Flame Grapefruit & Ortanique Orange
« on: March 25, 2021, 08:02:38 PM »
Howdy.
Anyone here have some input on em?  I never tasted (or heard of) these, nice looking trees, couldn't resist.  5' tall, healthy.  Planted.
Might let a few fruit stay on each, look strong enough.

The Flame is the best of the Red Grapefruit.  The Ortanique is not an oranfe, its a Tangor.  Very good fruit, at least from my friend grown in California.

Happy greening!!

Ortanique is a tangor, a natural hybrid from Jamaica. The grower who first propagated it, C. P. Jackson, named it Ortanique by combining OR(-ange), TAN(-gerine), and (un-)IQUE. That is apropos, as a tangor is just a mandarin (tangerine) and orange hybrid.

Ortanique fruit is somewhat variable due to climactic conditions but produces good fruit pretty much everywhere it is grown. The fruit is just different (thinner rind, more juice, etc.) depending on where it is grown.

W, thanks for info.  I'll just call it Ortanique & leave off orange.
It's got dozens of buds, if i treat it right & retains fruit, i'll take most off this yr.  Leave a few.
Anxious to taste.  Flame too!

The Temple is also a Tangor (commonly also called an orange).
