Tropical Fruit Discussion / What Eats Papaya Leafs?
« on: Today at 10:42:03 AM »
Noticed significant damage to several papaya plants; something is munching hard. Wondering what might be doing this, any ideas?

...I'm thinking iguana, but have never seen them eating papaya leafs, and the leaf stems don't seem damaged from the likes of a heavy lizard. They are notorious devourers of passion flowers, and are unwelcome in these parts for that alone. Time for a recon mission with the drones, see what's lurking up there.

A couple of trades with fantastic forum friends, and all of a sudden I have a few g. prainiana.

The largest of the bunch looks to have been trimmed prior to shipping, and arrived with 2 leafs. Yesterday and last night, we were pounded with 7+ inches of rain and 35 - 40 mph winds. The 2 last leafs did not make it. Plant has a nice root system, and a fat stem. Wondering if there is any chance of it sprouting new growth, or are garcinias done when they lose all leafs?

While I am of the belief garcinias can cross pollinate, if related closely enough (I have a few); looking for a companion for my charichuelo tree. Open to local pickup and shipping. Curious about other garcinias as well. Thanks!

Hello Fruit Friends!

I have a collection of wild mango and Wango seedlings that can let go of.

Wangoes are hybrids of m. Indica (mango) with wild mangoes (mango cousins, different species). These seeds are from choice selections made by Dr. Richard Campbell.

The crushed leaves of the wangoes are either citrusy or spicy. Very nice. I know some have crossed with OS. I would keep most/all of these if had the room.

60 for larger trees (m. Zeylanica, Tenom, Wangoes) These seedlings are from 2021 or 2022 fruits.

50 for medium trees (Pentandra, wild mangoes, and Wangoes) These are 1 or 2 years old.

30 for small wangoes and mempalam. These are either fast growers, or from last year.

20 for extra small mempalam.  These are from spring 2023.

Large trees are in 3 gal pots, and/or are around waist high.

PM if interested.

Also, will sell and ship some small mempalam and wango seedling trees to a select few forum members. Will post a thread soon, when I get enough free time to deal with shipping.

Hello fruit-loving friends! Another tree for sale.

Got an interesting tree that needs a new home. Ultra rare mangifera zeylanica for sale. Local pickup in South Miami area. Really good fruit, medicinal (bark too), and promising genetics for breeding programs and as rootstock. This baby gets big! One year old seedling, just lopped about 1 foot off the top.

$100

No shipping at present.

Will release a few more wild ones, and some wangoes soon. May do shipping when my schedule chills out a bit.

Anyone have plants like Brad's Atomic or Black Strawberry tomatoes, or Everglades tomato? I like the mini tomatoes, like cherries, and interested in different colors. Tasty too

Thx!

What's up All!

Having fun with macro shots of fruit trees and stuff, and wanted to share:

Clicking on pics and zooming in you can see more detail.

Gulf fritillary munching on p. nitida; I can't go for that, no can do!

Moved to monster passion vine, have at it.

Prickly pear flowers

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What Type of Maprang Is This?
« on: January 26, 2023, 08:12:17 AM »
Grew this maprang from seed. Do not recall where it came from. Does anyone have an idea if this could be the sweet or the sweet and sour variety, or other? The leaves put off a citrus mango smell when crushed, similar to LZ and OS.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / 2023 Mango Season
« on: January 13, 2023, 05:36:05 PM »
Hello mango growers!

Curious about flowering and productivity around Florida and abroad. Especially interested in sharing info on new varieties, in addition to experiences with classics as many of our climates are shifting.

Currently seeing flowers on Sugar Loaf and Ceci Love.

Sugar Loaf

Will traverse the jungle to check on other varieties.

After a crappy season last year, hopeful for even a decent year.

Please share your experiences and let us know what is flowering.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Anyone Getting Breadfruit in Miami-Dade Area?
« on: January 04, 2023, 12:43:25 PM »
Hello everyone.

Is anyone growing Ma'afala (or any other breadfruit) in Miami-Dade or Homestead area? Any info on flowering and fruiting, harvest? Thinking of adding a tree and wanted to hear about other's experiences.

Also, how good is the fruit? I'm looking for something to cook with, and wondering how realistic it is to use breadfruit as a regular food source. Love potatoes, yucca, malanga, boniato, and all kinds of stuff like that, but not easy to grow them in my yard. Medium size tree would work.

Have eaten some in past while in the Caribbean, but has been a while.

Hello Everyone!

Looking for p. nitida. I have a plant, and have some sprouts that may or may not make it (snail attack).

As I don't know if 2 plants are need for pollination/fruit (does anyone know if p. nitida is self fertile?), looking for another plant.

Willing to buy or even trade. Not sure my plant is big enough for cuttings yet, but would be willing to trade material with another nitida owner. Have other material for trade.

Thanks for all info and leads.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What To Do With Green Bananas?
« on: September 13, 2022, 11:22:12 AM »
Inspired by Brad, I chopped a fruiting banana stalk that was damaging our fence. In the past, would've waited till ripe, but after seeing those cado trees taken out, got the nerve up to take it down.

Question: Can you do anything to make super green bananas edible? These are Sweethearts. Not sure if they can be used like plantains at this stage. All ideas are welcome and appreciated!

I'm taking down most of a m. casturi tree (obtained from Squam). Lots of scions available. Tree has fruited. Will prep upon sale. $30 for 7 scions, plus shipping and handling. PM if interested.

Where can I find a nice sized lakoocha tree in South Florida? My tree dropped all its leaves and may have died.

Its been super dry and the sprinkler doesn't hit that spot well enough. Trying to save it, but a replacement or bigger tree might be needed, or would be nice.

Found this fruiting in the back, and not sure what it is. Thought it was pitomba. Pretty sure it is a Eugenia, but who knows. Please share your best guesses.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Name That Solanum! ...please
« on: March 10, 2022, 08:23:31 PM »
Hello everyone. Let's play the Name That Solanum Game. 1st one to accurately identify this plant wins seeds of this interesting plant, when it fruits. Looks like that shouldn't be too long of a wait.

The fruit is supposed to be tasty.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Trying to ID Cuban Fruit From Description
« on: February 20, 2022, 02:32:43 PM »
Hello

My mother-in-law is from Cuba, and has spoke very fondly of a fruit that no one has yet to identify to her. She recalls fruit from childhood in Cuba, 1950's and 60's.

Description:

Fruit are roundish, around grapefruit size, and can be purple or green. She does not recall any latex. Fruit was mostly flesh, juicy. Not much info on seeds. She recalls the fruit as being very sweet and tasty.

Any ideas as to what this could be?
