Can someone please recommend me a self pollinating dragon that tastes good? I’ve had some beautiful purple flesh ones that taste like nothing.

Can these be grown in a 25 gallon pot with a trellis?
Thanks so much!!!

S8 is probably the best overall cultivar, in my opinion. It is self fertile and in my case often self pollinating (maybe the bees do it I don't know). It seems very resistant to disease and overall is the lowest effort for me.

For the best flavor, wait til it's getting really loose and wiggly on the arm and then give it 5-7 days no water. It'll really sweeten up.

I totally agree and S-8 goes by another name "Sugar Dragon".

It is a must have and the flavor has a floral taste.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: MULBERRY. Thai dwarf vs worlds best?
« on: June 06, 2022, 06:17:54 PM »
Have you sampled any of the long bois? Pakistani / Himalayan / Shatoot or King white? Incomparable to Thai dwarf, infinitely better imo

I grow Worlds Best and my wife loves it! It is the World’s best Mulberry in many respects except taste!

I too grow and tasted Pakistani and Himalayan. Yes, they taste much better but don’t produce near the amount of fruit the Thai dwarf types do.

There is a Mulberry grower in Florida named Jan Doolin that grows dozens of Mulberry varieties. She has a Thai dwarf she calls Jan’s Best that she likes best of the Thai dwarf cultivars.

You can find Jan’s videos on YouTube.

Laguna Hills Nursery here sell these small grafted avocados for $30 each.

Might be a good size for shipping oversea.
The "C" on the bags stand for Carmen.

Those small grafted Avocado and other Avocado trees sold a Laguna Hills Nursery come from wholesale grower Brokaw Nursery, LLC, Ventura, California.

How is the fruit on the Asunta? Ive not seen those plants in person yet.

Just remember that NOT ALL Asuntas are the same. There are many Dragon Fruit varieties named Asunta IE: Asunta 1, Asunta 2, etc. and there are more than one numbered Asuntas IE: Asunta 5.

Part of the problem is Edgar gave away a lot of "Asunta" seedlings to hobbyists and the hobbyists assumed that all Asunta 4 hybrid seedlings are now Asunta 5.  :-[

You actually saw the fruit in person?

I never saw the fruit in person.

The closest I got to purchasing a plant was when I saw it at the Mango Professor's house. He would not let me have one reasonably. So I thought I would wait. I do not know what happened to the plants he was growing.

7

You actually saw the fruit in person? Where? Did it look more like this? It's supposedly Cereus validus.:

One of the places people have told me that they have seen Cereus validus is at the Huntington Library and Gardens, in San Marino, CA.

8

I was just wondering if anyone has experience with Cereus sp. (I.e. Peruvian apple cactus and relatives) fruit that is red/purple inside as opposed to the usual white. If you do, where did you get the cactus from? Is the fruit sweet? What species is it?

That looks nothing like the red-flesh apple cactus fruit I have seen.

I did not believe that the red-flesh fruit I saw was actually Cereus peruvianus.

Hi! i have not seen information on how old they should be from seed to show flowers and fruit. What do you know about that?

I have yet to see a Stenocereus queretaroensis cactus produce fruit in the U.S.

Hey all and thank you in advance for the advice! I have three dragonfruit cuttings i bought online and were doing great until this week. I moved them to a sunnier spot and they do get water from my yard

That looks to me like some insect has been chewing on the DF stem.

I like to add a 1/2" threaded anchor bolt to the top of my concrete posts.

I have never understood why TFF T-shirts are not sold for fund raising.

14
What's the point of a blind tasting unless you find out how the varieties were rated???

It is useful when doing research.  I am sure eventually the results will be revealed.

15
Interesting that this year it was a blind tasting event.
The one time I attended the tasting fruit was labeled.
Did you turn in your taste evaluation form?
Maybe they will send you the results of the tasting evaluation.

2 hour long interesting video on Avocados.

First half on Avocado roots, rootstock, and why Brokaw trees are better.

Second half of the video is a discussion on Avocado varieties, pollination.

I'm looking to give to a friend and was wondering, what is the best book on grafting?

The best book may be a DVD the Orange County Chapter of CRFG created called "Techniques of Grafting".
Available here --> https://ocfruit.com/Media.php

I too use and recommend YouTube for grafting.

The ones ricshaw posted appears to be a sprayer not a spinner, so the distance putting water out seems like not far enough i looking mostly for a range of 4 foot circle up to 10 to 12 foot circle as trees get alot bigger. I want large water droplets like brad talked about not a fine mist or even heavy mist.

As the tree grows I add more micro sprayers. I have tried the spinning sprayers... they do not give me the control I want.

2 - 4 micro sprayers should cover 4 - 12 foot circle.

19
I use only two types of sprinklers.

I purchase in bulk... it works for me.

Is there any where You can buy some of these fruits from these cultivars?

21

So if they're Namwa, how good is Namwa? I just want a banana that tastes like ice cream, regardless of what it's called!

A local CRFG Banana expert recommended Dwarf Namwah for my coastal Southern California location. It is a good tasting cultivator, but does not taste like ice cream;D

Another thought: I get out at night to pollinate, but the bees show up in full force by 8-9am. Is it possible they're taking the pollen I used to pollinate such that I won't get fruit set?

No... I doubt that it works that way.  Bees are taking pollen from the male antlers.

FYI: At this year's Dragon Fruit Festival, one of the speakers talked about Dragon Fruit grown commercially in Israel. One of the growers mentioned a Winter crop. We concluded that since they have developed Megalanthus hybrids, these like our Frankie's Red, do not ripen until late Fall, early Winter.

Do people in southern CA let their plants set fruit this late in the year or is it best to remove the buds and let the plants focus on current fruit set?

This year, my Dragon Fruit plants flowered and set fruit late! I live North of Los Angles and still have have flowers and fruit growing.

I notice that for So Cal, from South to North, San Diego County, Orange County, Los Angeles County, Ventura County, the reports of fruit set varies. The more South a County the earlier.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Thai Dwarf Mulberries - How Hardy?
« on: September 17, 2019, 12:06:35 PM »
what makes them dwarf?   Never heard of these dwarf Thai mulberries in Thailand, although had some stunted Thai mulberries before I dug out and burned.

??? Maybe it is the more bush like growth vs. tall tree like growth.
