Citrus General Discussion / Golden Pomelo - Anyone Growing It?
« on: March 12, 2025, 09:22:15 AM »
I just purchased some very delicious Japanese Golden Pomelo fruits locally. Does anyone have a tree growing that fruits?
I ate some fruits maybe 5 years ago and thought the inside flesh color was very unique, so I saved the seeds and grew out some seedlings. My seedling tree was left in a small pot and I forgot all about it so it didn't grow much for me.

When I saw the fruit was on sale from a private collector, I had to taste some again so I purchase it, $30 for 6 fruits. I'll post some photos later of the fruit.
The skin is very thin and soft, kinda difficult to peel since it sticks to the flesh. Inside color is dark golden yellow.

Taste of this fruit is excellent, I will need to figure out what other citrus I grow that it reminds me of. It is called a Golden Pomelo but the size is more like a small grapefruit, about the size of a normal Melogold grapefruit.

Here's a few photos I took today of the first fruit I'm tasting.

I met a person (Mike) who has a large canistel tree which has been fruiting for many years. He wants to share this variety since not many people will have this one that Roger Meyer found on his fruit hunting in Puerto Rico. The variety name will be "Roger's PR canistel" to dedicate it to the late Roger Meyer.

This mother tree is about 18 ft tall, many side branches with fruits. He needs to do some trimming of the tall branches this year, so this is the first cutting we did.

For Sale:
1. Roger Meyer's Canistel from Puerto Rico, "Roger's PR", cost is $10 each
2. Shipping cost, $11, small flat rate  box, USPS priority mail.
3. Sales to registered forum members, 6 months minimum.
4. Lower 48 states.
5. Payment with PayPal only (friends & family).

Total Cost  = $21 for one cutting.

6. I have the right to sell to anyone, so if you don't get a reply from me then you will be able to buy one.
7. Send me a PM if interested, I got these cuttings a few days ago, very limited quantity now, may get more later.
8. Sales profit will go to the tree owner.

Taking Orders Now.

Maybe next week I can start the sale again.

3
This is to let everyone who have purchased any cuttings from me that I think I finished with all the orders that were outstanding.

If you know I didn't ship you something that you paid for, then please send me a message this week.

Thanks,
Kaz

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / CLOSED: Avocado Cuttings -Nimlioh
« on: March 03, 2025, 10:50:27 PM »
Just got a few fruits and cuttings from a large Nimlioh avocado tree. I will be grafting this on my multi-grafted avocado tree.

I have more than I need for my grafting, so I'll sell some of the extras now, just got it today. This tree is very large, about 20ft tall, has many fruits, I haven't tasted it yet, but according to our avocado expert Greg Alder, he says it is pretty good tasting, not as good as Nabal, but still worth growing.

Here's Greg's video on his "THE Yard Post" for more details on the Nimlioh.
https://gregalder.com/yardposts/nimlioh-avocado-a-profile/

For Sale:
1. Nimlioh avocado cutting, qty=1, $10
2. Scion diameter (range of 1/4"-3/8").
3. Shipping box, small flat rate box, $11
4. You must have purchased from me before, be a forum member for minimum of 6 months, no exceptions
5. Send me a PM if you qualify and would like to buy cuttings.
6. I have the right to refuse to sell to anyone. If you don't get a reply that means I will not be selling any to you.
7. Payment must be PayPal only (Friends & Family).

I'll post some photos of the fruits from this tree. I took some photos today of a box of fruits picked off from the tree, also to show the size comparison, I put a large Marcus Pumpkin next to the Nimlioh.

The cuttings are fresh, only selling for the next few days, once I finish grafting on my trees, this sale is over. So hurry and order it if you want to add this to your collection. Next special avocado will be the Marcus Pumpkin in the photo once I help cut down the tops of this tree next month. I just received the Cannon Ball avocado scions from Shane so it will be grafted on the same branches as this Nimlioh and Marcus Pumpkin and my special Hawaiian Russell avocado so we can compare the size of the fruits and taste test from the same tree.

I'll post some photos of the prepared cuttings.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pest Control
« on: February 22, 2025, 07:36:08 AM »
Anyone have a good method of controlling the rats and squirrels that eats all the fruits just when it gets ripe?

Well lucky for me I have a pet hawk that hangs around my yard regularly. When he is on patrol, no rats, squirrels stay around. It is neat to see the hawks go after the rats. There are 4 babies that grew up across the street from my house in that big tree you see in this photo. Since they always came in my yard when they were still barely able to fly, they knew where all the varmints come to feast.

I was out in the front yard a few weeks ago when I saw this photo opportunity for a close up of the Cooper's Hawk guarding my fruit trees. Just sitting under my new American Flag.

Citrus General Discussion / Need ID Help for Lime
« on: February 22, 2025, 05:13:07 AM »
Hi,

I have a friend who  goes to Panama a lot to visit relatives, he will eventually move there to retire. He has been asking me for a few years if I know the citrus variety that is grown in Panama called the Panama National Lime. I thought it was a lemon fruit but this week he sent me a photo of the fruit and he said it was the Panama National Lime.

This flesh is orange in color, skin is green when ripe. Here's the latest photo he sent me this week.

Please let me know the name of this variety if you know it.

I got some rare passion fruits that were hybridized in China, similar to the Qinmi#9.

If anyone has eaten this passion fruit called Jindu No.3 (skin color is purple) then please post your comments on its taste. I tried maybe 3 so far and it is getting better tasting now. The fruit looks like any normal purple fruit we all have like the Fredericks, but the genetics of this one is supposed to be as good or better than the Qinmi#9.

I don't think there are any plants here in the states, but the fruit is available sometimes if you know where to buy it. A fruit friend got me some fruits to try and evaluate the taste.

I'll post photos later tonight of the fruit, brix, etc.

For now, I wanted to offer some seeds for sale to those of you that like to grow out passion fruits from seed.

Here's the For Sale:
1. Sale is for lower 48 states
2. You must be a forum member for at least 3 months and have purchased from me, No Exceptions.
3. Cost of the Jindu No.3 seeds, 25 seeds for $10
4. Shipping cost is $11, small flat rate box.
5. Total Cost => $21
6. Seeds will be taken from the fresh fruits I'm eating now.
7. Only accepting PayPal (friends & family). Don't pay until I message you that you can buy it.
8. I have the right to refuse to sell to anyone, if I don't reply to your message then you will not be able to buy it.
9. This is a very limited sale since I only have about 6 fruits left to eat, gave some away to friends to try.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / PinkGlow Pineapple On Sale
« on: February 18, 2025, 03:28:53 AM »
FYI, I noticed they are having 50% sale on the Pink Glow pineapple near me at an Asian market. If you like to buy it at the lowest price I've seen, it is $8 each at my Tokyo Central market. There was a lot of fruits on the shelf so you can choose the one you like.

I only bought some since they looked fresh, and some of the fruits had more portion of the top leaves than I have seen before. I plan to see if I can get a few to grow from the cutting.

Anyone try growing these Pink Glow pineapple and have success?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Guava Taste Test -Unknow varieties
« on: February 16, 2025, 02:54:43 PM »
I went to the local Farmers Market this week and picked up some nice-looking guava fruits. There were about 4 different types of guava, no names to ID them. Also, some very large cherimoya/atemoya fruits so I bought 2 large ones. The total for these fruits in the photo cost $60.

I bought these so I can taste the different guava fruits, and to save the seeds from the cherimoya to grow out.

If anyone would like to buy the seeds from the guava fruit then send me a message. Probably should be able to get 25- 50 seeds for $20 (includes $11 shipping). If you want to buy seeds, the top ranked #1 & #2 (25 seeds), rank #3 & #4 (50 seeds).

If you recognize any of these guavas or cherimoya then let me know below.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / For Sale: Australian Green cuttings
« on: February 16, 2025, 12:52:52 PM »
I will be cutting more of my large Australian Green tree today. So for those who qualify, you can buy a box.

I will have 2 sizes of boxes:
1. USPS small flat rate box (5"x8"2"), should be able to fit 5-10 cuttings in it. scion diameter will be 1/4"-3/8", length about 7" long.
2. USPS medium flat rate box (12"x3"x13"), will give the fatter cuttings, 1/2" and bigger, quantity 3-4, length about 12" long

Here's the cost for the Australian Mulberry:
1. Lower 48 states which allows mulberry cuttings to be shipped.
2. You must be a TFF forum member for a minimum of 6 months and have purchased from me or traded with me. No exception.
3. I will only go by the messages I receive, not by you posting to buy it below. There is a very limited number of scions until I run out.
4. Cost for small box of cuttings => $20 (includes the $11 for shipping)
5. Cost for medium box of cuttings =>$30 (includes the $19 for shipping)
6. PayPal payment only, Friends & Family
7. If you are interested, send me a message to purchase. Don't pay for it in advance. Anyone who does will have it refunded, and you will not be able to buy any.
8. I will start processing this order on Tuesday so you can pay now.
9. I have the right to refuse to sell to anyone, if you do not get a message reply, you will not be getting any.

The Australian Green from my brix testing has the highest reading of 30. All the others are below brix=26, so this is one you need to graft if you don't have it yet.  The Australian Green I have seemed to be relatively easy to graft compared to my White Pakistan mulberry tree scions.

I'll post some photos of my large tree so you can see how large some of the branches will be.

Happy Valentine Day to all.  Don't forget to get something special for your person.

I wanted to save one of my big Valentine pomelos but ended up giving to some people and for the citrus tasting I attended.

So, here's a photo of my Valentine pomelo.

Here's the background on this seedless Fuerte tree No.3

=> 3. Fuerte#1 Seedless cocktail avocado branch

===================================================
I will now list what I have found so far of these types below and as I get some photos of the actual fruits or photos of the fruits hanging from the tree, I will add to this post. Also, if anyone else has them growing, it would be nice to see your fruit photo showing it hanging from your tree, so we know it is a real fruit tree, not some photos taken from the internet (not verified as real).

I will not disclose the location of these trees, so the tree owners don't get hassled about selling cuttings or fruits from random people who heard about it.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Avocado Rootstock -Purchase
« on: February 02, 2025, 05:46:47 AM »
Has anyone here purchased good avocado rootstock from a wholesale nursery?

If you did, please let me know which one you ended up buying. I'm thinking a making a large rootstock purchase (50-100) since they have minimum orders to buy them. I have a contact/friend who owns a nursery so I can get it purchased from him.

Check out the list of commercial rootstocks that Brokaw nursery has in stock now.

[url=https://postimages.org/]

Here's their website with details on the rootstock if you want to read up on it.

https://www.brokawnursery.com/ourproducts/avocado/avocado-cultivars/

================
Also, if it's a good deal, I might buy some extras for those of you that have supported my sales, just pay for the rootstock and cost to ship to you once I get them. I'll probably end up picking 2 rootstock varieties for my order.

I will need to see how much it might cost me for the rootstock first.

Is anyone growing this or know who sells this variety of guava.

Outside has nice red blush and inside is red flesh. Looks like the fruit shape can be round or pear shaped.

Ok, I just tasted a few of the Dennis Big Yellow Passion fruits, they still taste about the same, very good, hardly any sourness.

Instead of cutting all the passion fruit vine, I will take Advance Order now, those on the list can buy it for the price below. I will not take any more cuttings than to fill this order.

I will keep this For Sale open until February/March sometime. We think the fruits will all be done by March so I should be able to start taking fresh cuttings and ship while they are no more than 1-2 days old.

So, here's the Advance Sale Order:

1. Dennis, big yellow fruit, passion cutting, 2 for $15.
2. Shipping cost; you will have two options below:
2a) Small USPS flat rate box, $11 - cuttings will have no leaves, length about 7-8" long to fit the box.
   > small flat rate box is 5"x8"x2"

2b) Medium USPS flat rate box, $19- cuttings will have a few leaves, length of each will be about 12-14" long.
      > medium flat rate box is 11"x 13"x3"
The medium box will give you the longer cuttings for the same cost.

3. CA residence will get a slightly larger box for about $11 to ship.
4. Only open to those who have purchased/traded/sold items with me.

-> Don't message me or ask here if you don't meet #4 above.

5. Cuttings will be taken some time in March/April, fresh, then shipped within 2 days.
6. I have the right to refuse to sell to anyone. If I don't reply to your message to be on the Advance List then you will not be buying any from me.
7. Only send me message to get on the Advance List, don't post your request below.
8. You only pay when I message you to say I'm ready to ship out your order. PayPal, Friends & Family only for payment.

I will try to show some photos again of the fruits, will take another brix reading this week.

Once I get enough people on the Advance Wait List, then I will close this post.

Here's the old post with photos of the fruit and some brix readings I made last year.

https://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=54808.msg529475#msg529475

Here's more info on the fruit of Dennis compared to other yellow/purple Brazilian and Qinmi#9 passion fruit.

https://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=53767.msg535392#msg535392

Dennis had brix ranging from low =8, to high =16. I will try to take a brix reading again this week when my last fruit I have is ready to eat.

Ok, since I have one weird pomelo variety that likes to have tons of seeds, I thought I will do a contest for all the members who have purchased/traded/sold things to me.

No other people need to guess, this is only for those I have sold items, traded items, or purchased items.

I love the Pomelo fruits, so I have most of the good tasting pomelos. Some pomelos seems to have more seeds in them than others. For example the Reinking has a lot of seeds, maybe 20-30 seeds in one fruit. But I have a seedling pomelo tree which gives good tasting fruits, I called it Roy pomelo.

The seeds in this Roy pomelo have the most I have ever seen. Check out the number of seeds there was in just 2 fruits I cut open and ate.

Here's the photos, guess how many total seeds in the last photo with the seeds drying on the paper towel.

You might be able to count most of the seeds in the photo..

Citrus General Discussion / Pomelo With Lots of Seeds
« on: January 12, 2025, 06:38:13 AM »
Does anyone know why some citrus fruits have so many seeds?

I grow many different citrus varieties, most of my trees all have 5-30 different varieties grafted on the branches of one tree.

I will count the number of seeds when they dry up, just washed the seeds tonight.
