Citrus General Discussion / Re: Golden Pomelo - Anyone Growing It?
« on: March 15, 2025, 03:57:46 PM »
Robert, thanks for your taste test feedback. Yes, it is different than other Golden Grapefruit I have tasted. This one is called the Golden Pomelo but it must be some time of hybrid, too small for a pomelo and the individual fruit sack is not like a pomelo.

I agree with Brian's comments. If the scion is green, it is alive, leave it alone. I had some citrus grafts take up to 2 years before any new buds pushed out. I graft a lot of citrus scions and it is normal for some grafts to take up to one year before showing any buds.

3
I agree with Peep, never use the scions with new flush, not a good idea. Only if it was a rare scion and you had no other to choose from.

I do both scions with growth buds bulging, or not, as long as it has leaf nodes (cut off leaves before use) then it will be fine for grafting.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: How to select rootstock seedlings
« on: March 14, 2025, 08:42:39 PM »
Sam, I have seen the results of J-root seedlings, they grow fine, but not as fast or healthy as straight roots as Millet and others have mentioned. I just don't get rid of my J-root seedling, still can be useful to graft.

It does look much better than what you described before you cared for it. The open trunk bark damage can still introduce termintes, fungus, etc.
What I do to a tree like that is to scrap off any mold, damage to the open (no bark) area that is till showing in your current tree photo, then paint it completely with tree sealer (looks like tar, from Amazon) and it will eventually heal a little more, but won't completely grow back with that much damage already. it took my tree about 2 years for most of the bark to grow back. I had done a dumb thing like putting a sheet metal wrap on the lower main truck to keep rats from climbing up the fruit tree. It doesn't work, just get mold/fungus under the sheet metal and then you get the same results as your tree with bark damge. Never do that again to my trees.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Calamondin x calamondin = kumquat?
« on: March 14, 2025, 08:25:25 PM »
Do you think the loop caused the splitting, I don't. I have seen similar look on many seedlings and it doesn't damage above the trunk that I have noticed. It just may restrict the growth a little but usually no harm no damage.

I didn't know there was a thornless calamondin, thats a good one to have. My grafted tree has thorns, but at least it has good large fruits so I'm happy with it. Are your fruits perfectly round shaped or a little elongated like the Centinel kumquat?

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: For Sale: Grafted Loquat Trees

I'm going to see the guy with the Wedgwood mother tree in 2wks, send me a message if you want to buy some cuttings. I give the sale profit to the tree owner. I need to graft more on my trees. I think it might taste better than the Big Jim White (JBW). I need to share this one with our TFF members.

I liked the Marumi when our CRFG had the tour at the UCR budwood research grove. It was the sweetest kumquat we tried.

I did find an aborted seed in the honey crisp.

SoCalGardenNut, I have a good story for you. A good friend tells me his father-in-law eats at least 1 Nagami kumquat from his tree everyday so he has to make sure to pick some and keep it in the refrigerator when he asks for more. That man is over 100 now, I think 103yrs old. He says it's because he has been eating the kumquats all these years.

Yes, the Golden Grapefruit I ate years ago looked like what you posted, it has a thicker skin/rind.

But this Japanese Golden Pomelo has very thin skin and sticks to the flesh so not so easy to peel, but it is really sweet and juicy. I just ate 10 of these thin skinned Golden Pomelos and they had the thinner skin as you can tell. Here's some other fruits I cut in half to show the thickness of the skin/rind. Some Valencia orange, OroBlanco, seedling pomelo, seedling Ruby Red grapefruit.

Ok, just did a brix reading, it is very high, brix=15.

That is pretty good when you compare it to my other ripe fruits now, navel orange, oro blanco, valencia orange, madarins, which are  all in the range of brix=8-12.

You should have kept the Nagami and grafted on the Nordmann seedless nagami. It tastes a little less sour and no seeds. I did that on my Nagami so now it is mostly Nordmann seedless kumquat. I like it better than the Maru or Meiwa now because it still has a lot of fruits and easy to eat with no seeds to worry about. One of my favorite kumquats now, but the Crispy Honey is too sweet and can't beat that one.

No, not this one. But someone told me Hershel (Madison nursery) sells the fruit from time to time so maybe he is cleaning the tree.

This tree was here a long time ago, someone probably planted a seed or got a cutting to graft from a friend. I couldn't get any details on it.

Now that I finished half the fruits, I can tell you it is one of the juiciest citrus fruits I have eaten. I reminds me of my Cocktail grapefruit when is at it best ripeness, very juicy, but this Golden Pomelo flesh is soft and flavor is better than the Cocktail or Melogold. Also, I would rank the taste of this fruit to be 2X better tasting than the Cocktail (Mandalo) grapefruit and I have the original Cocktail before it was released by CCPP. Even though this fruit is so juicy it gets all over your hand, it is much better than sumo as well. I'll need to take the brix reading to see if it will be over 16.

Citrus General Discussion / Golden Pomelo - Anyone Growing It?
« on: March 12, 2025, 09:22:15 AM »
I just purchased some very delicious Japanese Golden Pomelo fruits locally. Does anyone have a tree growing that fruits?
I ate some fruits maybe 5 years ago and thought the inside flesh color was very unique, so I saved the seeds and grew out some seedlings. My seedling tree was left in a small pot and I forgot all about it so it didn't grow much for me.

When I saw the fruit was on sale from a private collector, I had to taste some again so I purchase it, $30 for 6 fruits. I'll post some photos later of the fruit.
The skin is very thin and soft, kinda difficult to peel since it sticks to the flesh. Inside color is dark golden yellow.

Taste of this fruit is excellent, I will need to figure out what other citrus I grow that it reminds me of. It is called a Golden Pomelo but the size is more like a small grapefruit, about the size of a normal Melogold grapefruit.

Here's a few photos I took today of the first fruit I'm tasting.

Yes, I'm interested in wild huckleberries.

16
I got my plants, this time it was a little shaken up, packing wasn't good. But all the plants are still alive so I'm happy. Now just need to get it to grow and have fruits.

17
Yes, I haven't tasted it yet either. No fruit photo cut open, the owner didn't take those photos but he will this time around when the fruits ripen this year.

I will also take photos of the ripe fruit when I get one to try.

=========================

For this week, I am closing the sale. Maybe next week I can fill the orders for anyone else that was interested in the cuttings. The tree is large enough to take cuttings where it has no fruits on the branch.

Photos taken yesterday.

I met a person (Mike) who has a large canistel tree which has been fruiting for many years. He wants to share this variety since not many people will have this one that Roger Meyer found on his fruit hunting in Puerto Rico. The variety name will be "Roger's PR canistel" to dedicate it to the late Roger Meyer.

This mother tree is about 18 ft tall, many side branches with fruits. He needs to do some trimming of the tall branches this year, so this is the first cutting we did.

For Sale:
1. Roger Meyer's Canistel from Puerto Rico, "Roger's PR", cost is $10 each
2. Shipping cost, $11, small flat rate  box, USPS priority mail.
3. Sales to registered forum members, 6 months minimum.
4. Lower 48 states.
5. Payment with PayPal only (friends & family).

Total Cost  = $21 for one cutting.

6. I have the right to sell to anyone, so if you don't get a reply from me then you will be able to buy one.
7. Send me a PM if interested, I got these cuttings a few days ago, very limited quantity now, may get more later.
8. Sales profit will go to the tree owner.

THIS SALE IS OVER FOR THIS WEEK.

Maybe next week I can start the sale again.

20
This is to let everyone who have purchased any cuttings from me that I think I finished with all the orders that were outstanding.

If you know I didn't ship you something that you paid for, then please send me a message this week.

Thanks,
Kaz

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Lychee Air Layering Questions...
« on: March 10, 2025, 04:14:46 PM »
I just removed 14 air layers on a rare guava tree, the ones that had sideways branches like yours did not have many roots. The ones with good sun exposure and growing upwards had roots and will make it after I cut them off yesterday.

I have done over 20 lychee air layers, for me its a waste of time since my Brewster is so large I don't need to do it. I wanted to make some air layers for people who didn't have a nice Brewster tree. Just takes away too much space for me since I can't cut back those branches that would do yearly to keep the large tree in check. I don't really need 150lbs of fruit for myself and friends. Now I have done some good air layers on guavas, I will do some on my best citrus varieties so I don't need to have so many rootstocks to graft them tom. One good thing about air layering is that the plant will be off and running when you remove it with good roots, while a grafted small lychee tree with not fruit or grow much for years.

This sale is over for this week.

I may resume it next week.

23
Ok, I found the PM (May2024), is this the ones I sent you?
Just shipped them again today, good luck.

24
Mike, what? Tell me which white sapote I sent. I should be able to take fresh cuttings now and send it.

Your Marcus Pumpkin scions were excellent majority are growing now. This fruit I show is from a person here in SoCal, his scions took a few times before it made it. I will compare the fruits from both of them. He said his source was Florida (Pine Island). Where was the source of your Marcus Pumpkin.

25
Here's my fruit photos I took yesterday, ate the Marcus Pumpkin, it was very good, not watery at all.
