what is going on with this red atemoya? It started with the dark stuff, but at least the leaves were green. But now it's getting worse, with the leaves actually becoming quite yellow-ish and drying up.

I'm based in the Canary Islands, zone 11b.

So far, I have several subtropical and temperate trees, but I have an available spot in my backyard which I'm going to use to grow vegetables and other fruits (in pots).

I have some strawberries pots already, some peppers, and I'm considering adding tomatoes and zucchini. What I don't know is, do these plants die after a season? Or can I plant them in larger pots to let them grow like a "tree"?

3
I have two spots on a wall, deciding whether to go for a vine (likely kiwi) or use a nectarine and a cherry.

As the deciduous bear fruit on second year wood, would they really be a smart choice here? Do they even fruit again on the same branch once they have already fruit once?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Attaching kiwi to wall
« on: February 23, 2023, 03:50:07 PM »
My backyard is starting to get a little crowded with so many fruit trees and plants, but I have a full-sun wall which is demanding something on it :)

I have three avocados along the wall, about 4-5ft from it. At some point these avocados would grow and probably let this wall in a partial-shade situation, but that's still many years away.

So, I'm thinking on cover this wall with kiwis. As I have three avocados, maybe plant a male between the Hass and the Fuerte, and female between the Fuerte and the Reed, but near the wall.

But, I have a question. As I won't have a trellis, the vines should be attached directly on the wall. Is that a crazy idea? I see everyone using a trellis.

EDIT: edited the title as the discussion has led to trellis anyways.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What's going on with this mango?

I have this lippens in a pot and for a couple of weeks now, it's showing this bad look.

What is it?

My papaya trees have been bearing fruit since summer, yet all of them are still very green.

Normally, how long does it take from flower to harvest?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Curly leaves on yellow sapote
« on: December 20, 2022, 04:14:42 AM »
This yellow sapote was recently dug out and planted in this location. In the process of digging it out, I broke the largest root, I wasn't expecting such small tree to have a root that depth. This was about two weeks ago.

Right now, this is the situation in its new spot:

Notice those curly leaves? What might be the reason?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What's this white thing in my lychee?
« on: November 26, 2022, 05:39:47 AM »

Bad focus, but it's something appearing at different branches of the tree, and even around the trunk on the soil.

It's not solid, rather like a "spider sac", although it's not really so. It's kind of sticky, but easily cleanable.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / How should I prune a red atemoya?
« on: November 07, 2022, 04:17:31 AM »
I planted this red atemoya about five months ago.

It's been consistently growing on those two main branches.

Should I trim them back to encourage branching as in deciduous trees?

My idea was to let it grow up to the black zone, and then let it form a canopy.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What might be wrong with this mango?
« on: October 22, 2022, 04:40:08 AM »
What might be wrong with the mango (Lippens) on the left? All new growth from summer has not transitioned into dark green.

It uses the same mix that all my other trees (including those in the ground), so I hardly doubt it's about poor drainage or lack of nutrients.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Full shade from late October to February
« on: October 20, 2022, 10:51:08 AM »
Starting today (literally, yesterday was ok) until late February, the patio of my backyard is fully shaded.

Persimmon, apple, pear, pomegranate, plums, nectarine, peaches, lychee, longan, guava, citrics, subtropicals.... any suggestions for that area, considering that it has to be a potted plant.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Small fruit bush for this corner?
« on: September 11, 2022, 03:59:20 PM »
This corner in my lawn is looking for a small fruit bush:

Details:
- Area: 4 by 5 feet.
- Max height: 3-4 feet.
- Sunlight: full day. In some years, when the lychee on the right side grows, this corner will be shaded by the last few hours of the day, but still plenty of direct sunlight.
- It has to be evergreen.

I'd be looking for something similar to the size of a kumquat, in fact, this would be ideal, but it's pretty hard to get here. By contrast, limequat is available at most nurseries, but I don't really like it.
Another choice might be a blueberry, but I think this spot has too much direct sunlight for it.
I had even thought about some potted strawberries, but I don't really like this idea.

What else comes to your mind?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Papaya roots outside of the soil
« on: September 07, 2022, 06:28:18 PM »
A few weeks ago, I started to notice how this papaya was leaning to one side. Days later, I also noticed how it was very unstable, and a few days later, I started to see its roots.

It's like if the soil was spitting it out. I tried to add more soil but to no avail.

Any ideas about how to approach this? The other papaya in the background is very healthy.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Lychee with branches under soil?
« on: September 07, 2022, 06:21:30 PM »

this is a lychee from an air layer. Can you see how there are like "roots" coming out of the soil? Should I trim them?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Blueberries in warmer climates

I know there are some low chill blueberries, but are they low enough that you can grow them in South Florida or Hawaii? Which are the climate most similar to the one where I live.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Avocado not as healthy as my other avocados
« on: August 27, 2022, 12:38:51 PM »
About 5 weeks ago, there were very hot days where I live, about 35C (95F).

From all of my trees, the avocados were the one hit harder, which was expected as they are in the most sunny area of my backyard. Most of their leaves were sunburned.

I have a Hass, Fuerte and Reed. The Fuerte and Reed have recovered very well, however, it looks like the Hass is not keeping up with them. It looks rather sad with curly leaves.

These two are Fuerte and Reed:

The thing is that I think the problem is not really related with those hot days over a month ago. This Hass also has a thousand of ants living under the mulching, like many of my other trees, but particularly this one and an orange tree have the most.

Could it be that these ants are damaging the roots?

17
So I live in an 11b area of the Canary Islands.

Apples should not bear fruit because the temperature is not chill enough. However, there are plenty of apple trees everywhere, even on public spaces, all with fruit.

Given this situation, I'm considering planting 3 varieties close together to grow into a "single tree", but prior to that, I'm trying to understand why are they bearing fruit if the chilling requirements are not met?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What's going on with this yellow sapote?

What's going on with this yellow sapote?

It's the only tree in my backyard with such a bad looking leaves.

I haven't seen any insect on them.

19
I have several trees in my backyard, but I have detected that specifically under the mulching of two trees (an avocado and a lychee), there are thousands of ants.

Every time I water those trees, they start to move everywhere, including climbing the tree.

What can I do to deal with them in a natural way? I don't want to use chemical products as we are talking about fruit trees.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / A dilemma with my lychees...
« on: July 24, 2022, 07:43:17 AM »
These are my two lychees:

I got the first one about two weeks ago and put it in the ground right away. In theory, it was a Sweetheart.

Then, I tasted a lychee for the first time (it's not a fruit you can find in a market here), and that damn thing is pretty delicious! So, I bought the second one about a week ago, a Suey Tong, just to have a different variety. However, it turns out the nursery only sells Suey Tong, so the first one is also a Suey Tong...

And here's my dilemma...

I have two spots for them. The main one, where it's possible to grow with a good rounded shape, is where the tree is planted already. The second spot would better support an "elliptic shape", as it's close to the wall but wide.

Now, if you look at those two trees, it looks like the one already in the ground is perfect for the other spot, and the one that is in the pot is perfect for the main one, as it has a more upright shape. Also, it looks more healthier than the one in the ground, with more established leaves and not so many young ones.

Would it be wise to make the swap? As it was recently planted, I hardly doubt it has established a root system outside of the rootball yet. Would this tree with low bifurcation eventually form a rounded shape?

21
Long story short, I'd like to plant a pomegranate or a persimmon close (as in 2-in-1 hole) to a nectarine tree.

Which would cause less troubles down the road? As we are talking about different families here.

22
The new growth of my young sunwright nectarine tree is growing in a direction that eventually will cross with existing branches.

As nectarines bear fruit on last years' growth, what should I do? Should I prune them now? Or should I wait until next year?

In the following picture there is an example:

Tropical Fruit Discussion / A couple of questions about lychees
« on: July 09, 2022, 06:03:59 AM »
I got this Sweetheart, coming from an air layering:

I'm considering allocating for it either a space of 2.2 x 2m, or the full area of 3.2 x 2.2m. The first case is where it's right now, and the circle on the right would be for a small kumquat. Should I decide to allocate all the space, the lychee would be in the middle.

All this area will have grass on it probably, except for some area around the base of the tree/trees. I was thinking on using geotextile fabric and stones because this area tends to have a lot of weeds, but that would probably impact the nutrients available for the lychee. What do you think? Would it be wise to use inorganic mulch here instead of grass?

And the second question is about, at this current size, would it be better if I move it to a pot, or can I plant it directly in the ground? I have read that lychees should be kept in pots until they are big enough to cope with wind, but don't know what's "big enough".

24
My backyard is somewhat windy as there are no buildings neither at the right nor at the left side, so it's a perfect corridor for the wind to pass freely. Let's say on normal windy days, maybe averages are about 30Km/h, with gusts which can double that speed.

I have read lychees are too weak to wind, but I have seen videos of trees in the wild, or even planted in front-yards, so they're really exposed... and they are thriving. So, that makes me wonder, are Lychees really that weak to wind?

I'd like to plant one in my backyard, but I don't want to cover it with some strong shielding. I want to see my tree! xD

25
These are my average temperatures:

And this is a sketch of my backyard:

I already have:
  • Avocados Hass, Fuerte, Reed
  • Papaya Honey
  • Mango Lippens
  • Orange Lane Late
  • Mandarin Clemenule
  • Lilly Pilly
  • Nectarine Sunwrigth
  • Plums Golden Japan and Black Amber

I have room for other three trees, marked with ?. Probably bottom right will be for a dragon fruit.

Any ideas for the other two in the left side? The one next to the mango has to be evergreen, the one at the bottom left can be deciduous like the nectarine and the plums.

A classic choice for the evergreen would be a lemon, but I'm looking for other choices.

Recommendations?
