Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Mangos in san diego

Hi Simon,

Interesting you had no issues with Pineapple Pleasure at your house. At my location it is a poor performer but it could have been a rootstock issuue as well as the bark was pealing and it appeared to have disease issues.

My Pina Colada mango tree inside my greenhouse is doing very well and I finally did get my Coconut cream to fruit. Hopefully next year I will get more.

Good Luck

John can you post  the picture of you pina colada tree inside your greenhouse?

Was unable to make the drive to WPB, so had the Tong Dam shipped. Very pleased with the tree I received -- thank you, Alex and Becky!

Very top ripen eating Thai variety.

What variety is this guava?

It's an SP, but the few collectors who have it call it "Skittles". It really does remind me of Skittles  candy. I have two of them, one produces prolifically as shown and is very squat and small, another I have is really big but for whatever reason doesn't set any fruits even though it has flowered two years in a row.

Thank you. Leaves look nice and elongated.  I have a very old variety, Xali.  It is 30years old and I am thinking to top work some on its branches to different varieties

I'm hoping to modify the date into November, my guavas are progressing faster than expected and looks like early - mid November will be peak.

Anyone else have guavas lined up for then?

Yes, all my citrus are in pots. For a 25 gallon pot I use 2ml of the concentrate in a few cups of water. I water normally first, wait a few days then dose with the drench. Now, we don't have ACPs here, but do have other psyllids, plus various other pests. I have also had good luck with a spray of LUCID in addition to the LADA. Both are made my Rotam. The LUCID has the advantage of being a good miticide too, and I have problems with spider mites sometimes.

Isn't imidacloprid a systematic pesticide?  Can you eat the fruits after?

My only garlic plant flowered and turn to black seeds.  What you guys think of growing them from seeds?

Go for it. Garlic greens can be eaten lile chives, so you will get something to eat out of it for sure.

Thank you

Thank you: Janet and Kaz   It is the  first year Saijo giving me fruits after grafted 2 years ago.  I will try to dry them whole "hoshikaki style"  and see how good they taste.

I'm surprised noone mentioned all the hot seedless guava variety on the market. I grow a few of them - Thai ruby seedless guava, Thai seedless, Taiwanese ruby seedless, Taiwanese seedless

Greenpasteur,  can you post a picture of the leaves of the rounded guava fruit in picture#2?  How big is the leaf?  Thanks

Here are two variety on one tree I grafted. The round Taiwanese ruby seedless guava leaves is on the right

It has a very big leaves. Bigger than Taiwanese white seedless

Thank you.  Mine is about a year old growing from seed.  The leaves are very big, wavy, and purplerish in color.  Very nice foliage.  The fruit I got the seeds from looks similar to yours but almost twice as big.  It contains 4-5 seeds

I did get those saijo fruits shown in the photos from Janet who says it is the best. I tasted it when it softened and it was excellent. I usually never like to eat the Hachiya (eat very soft- astringent) but the Saijo was good and I could eat that one soft. I also dehydrated the Saijo and they tasted much sweeter than the Fuyu.

Did you dehydrated Saijo while it was ripen soft or at firm stage?  Thank you

I dehydrated 8 baggies full but my wife keeps eating it
My plan was to have some at Christmas but I am down to 1 1/2 bags now.

Thought you still have quite a few NDM hanging on the tree.  Are they all eaten up?

The last time I saw Brad’s trees, I was surprised at how well they were growing.  I can’t seem to get mine kick started and I live in a similar climate.  I have killed a ton of seedlings and had no luck with air layers.  I’m probably planting them when they’re too small even though I have them under shade cloth.  Or fertilizing them wrong.  Whatever, I’m going to keep trying because I want raw fingers from peeling so many Brewster lychees.
Lychees have to be one of the most beautiful trees when full of ripe fruit. Nice haul Spaugh!

I think soil media plays a very big role for growing any kind of trees especially fruit trees.  Brad's land is probably has very fertile soil, consists mainly of granite rocks.  Those rocks have a lots of mineral especially Phosporous which promote root growth and fruit settings.

I am Thai and the Thais enjoy eating this variety green.  Best way to enjoy it is to peel off the skin, cut into wedged shape, and then dip each piece into salt+crush dried chili and little sugar each bite.
You can substitute dried chili with fresh chopped up Thai chili, which is better tasting

22
yes, air layer works fine like other fruit trees.

Thanks Kaz

Tagging onto this convo, I'm wondering if people have prunus mume scionwood. I'd love to add some varieties onto my kanko bai.

How big are the fruits of your kanko bai?  I am interested in grafting a prunus mume onto my peach tree perhaps to make some Japanese style preserved plum(umeboshi). Thanks

24
Will air layering work on loquat?

25
Nate, the shape matches some of the Vista White fruits I have seen from nursery and locally. But I'm not sure why some people who grow this variety say the fruit size is small to medium. My fruits are always on the large size. I'll post photo of the I took yesterday of this tree.

Wow the fruits are very big.  How many seeds inside this loquat variety.?  Does any of the loquat variety contain just a single seed?  Friend of mine told me his tree used to have fruits with only one seed from each fruits for years.  Now they have 2 to 3 seeds
