Citrus Buy, Sell, & Trade / Re: Wanted: Gold Nugget Mandarin
« on: May 05, 2014, 07:08:28 PM »
My 4" potted Gold Nugget Mandarin arrived today from Logees greenhouse.  The tree was about 18" tall with two medium side branches and two newly emerging side branches at the top of the tree.   The scion portion of the tree look quite healthy.  Due to  the tree spending its whole life inside a 4" pot, the root system was very root bound.  I washed out all the medium (1/4" pine bark and a little peat), unraveled the root system and temporarily transplanted it into a 1 gallon container.   I have a 3-gallon Air Root Pruning container (ARPC) which I filled with cedar mulch soaking over night.  Tomorrow I will again transplant the Gold Nugget into its permanent 3-gallon home.  The full price of the  Logees Gold Nugget tree was $29.95 for the tree, $11.95 shipping & handling, making a total of $41.90.  Not all that expensive, but still it was a 4" container tree.   It should grow up and become a good tree. In the end I was mostly satisfied- Millet

Citrus General Discussion / Valentine Pummelo
« on: May 04, 2014, 08:52:35 PM »
Supposedly Valentine pummelos are ready to harvest around Valentine's day.   Hooserquilt suggested to leave the fruit hanging on the tree for another 4 to 6 weeks past Valentine's day. Doing so makes the fruit taste much MUCH better.  Today, May 4th I pick my last Valentine pummelo.  My wife and I ate it for breakfast, it was very dark red, large, sweet - and wonderful.  Hooserquilt your  correct AGAIN. - Millet

Fruitlovers, I think as far as Coke drinkers go, it is not millions and millions.  The number of the world's coke drinkers,  is actually billions and billions of people.  - Millet

Swimmiingfree,  Drilling holes into the sides of a regular container does not work.  When I first got interested in Air Root Pruning Containers I did drill a lot of holes in the side of a standard container.  The roots that did not hit EXACTLY a hole begin to circle around the inside of the container, and of course all the roots that actually hit the side of the container also begin to circle around and around inside the container.  A root grows like a bullet goes.  Meaning once a root starts growing in a direction, it will always continue in that direction until it finally hits an object that redirects it.  In side a container it never stops circling.    Air Root Containers have guides that direct all roots to an air root pruning opening.  Air Root Pruning containers are the best containers available.  I really like Root Maker. - Millet

Citrus General Discussion / Re: meyer lemon losing its fruit
« on: May 02, 2014, 03:31:09 PM »
Red,  there are two items involved with your Meyer lemon.  1)  It could well be the loss of leaves.  Even though the tree has set new foliage, the new leaves are not yet generating any energy or nutrition, either to develop the fruit or to the benefit of the tree.   A citrus leaf does not/cannot send out any energy or nutrition to the tree or fruit until the leaf become fully developed and  mature.  Therefore, the new foliage probably was of no help to the tree.  2). The tree spent much of its energy last year, by producing a extensive crop of 700 fruit, and was not able to re-supply itsef with  enough energy to produce a full crop this year because of the loss of it leaves. - Millet

Brian's post is correct.  The citrus seeds that do come true from seed are:  All most all sweet oranges, true grapefruit, lemons, limes,  pure mandarins (other than king and clementine), most tangelos,  hybrid tangerines and tangors (except temple). Most pummelos do no produce true from seed. . - Millet

Like I've said before, taste is very selective and personal. For sure millions, and millions and even more millions of people in this country buy and drink both Pepsi (Tropicana), and Coke (Minute Maid) every morning. Surely the reason is that they enjoy it for breakfast.   - Millet.

If one can use the good flavored essences derived from the orange peel, and adding them to the juice to improve the experience of drinking  a better tasting natural product, I think it is a good practice.  I like better. - Millet

« on: April 30, 2014, 04:07:29 PM »
I have nothing to say about H2O2.  I will say this, when a container citrus tree is planted in the proper potting medium, it has plenty, PLENTY, of oxygen for the roots. Even more than the tree actually requires. - Millet

I don't know how much good H2O2 does, but I can say with certainty, Ryan L's citrus trees were absolutely some of the very best container trees on the Citrus Growers forum, and by deduction on the Tropical Fruit Forum.. Really great looking trees. - Millet

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Pomelo versus Grapefruit
« on: April 28, 2014, 10:07:51 PM »
Mike, we don't have to assume that the original species were citron, pummelo, and mandarin.  The genetic work has already been accomplished, and indeed the original citrus varieties were verified as being only the citron, pummelo, and mandarin.  As far as the pummelo and sweet orange being the parents of the grapefruit, I can't say for 101% sure that the genetic work has been done to verify that, but I believe it also has been.  Anyway, you will find that most all internet web sites state that pummelo and sweet orange are indeed the parents.  - Millet

Taste is very selective.  What taste fantastic to one person, another person thinks otherwise.  To me Cara Cara, though not my favorite (Xie Shan is), it is still in my mind a great fruit.  On personal taste appeal, every opinion is correct. - Millet

Clay,, thanks for the Durlings video.  It was quite interesting. I've seen many grafting videos, but never seen the tactic of binding over the scion and then placing a rubber band around it  to hold it down for the one year time frame.  - Millet

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Ice Cream Banana
« on: April 27, 2014, 07:32:59 PM »
The Ice Cream banana, also know as Blue Java and Ney Mannan is a great banana for many reasons.  Many people consider the Ice Cream banana the best tasting of all bananas. They compare its flavor to that of vanilla custard or ice cream, its generally highly regarded.  The skins have an odd, silvery-blue sheen, but then ripen to a pale canary yellow color.  It is a bit tall, but otherwise well suited to the home garden ..  It is probably too large for containers. Everyone's tastes differs, but when most people who knows bananas are asked what is the best tasting banana, the three that are most commonly named are Musa Mysore, Rajapuri and Ice Cream.  Musa Kru also gets high mark's. - Millet

Citrus Buy, Sell, & Trade / Re: Wanted: Gold Nugget Mandarin
« on: April 26, 2014, 07:37:51 PM »
Scott, I received the Gold Nugget mandarin from Bayfloral today by UPS.  The packaging was excellent, the tree healthy, the shape of the scion was well balanced.  Over all I was satisfied.  There was a lot of positives with the company and the tree. The negatives were 1) the price of the tree at $97.57, and 2) I was a little disappointed about the size of the tree, which was sold as a 5-gallon tree. Over all, would I buy from Bayfloral again  - Yes I certainly would.  I would just say I like Four Winds Growers tree's a little better, and their pricing is much more completive.  Anyway I got the tree  that I wanted, and I thank you for letting me know about Bayfloral. - Millet
