I bought a couple beautiful low-chill peach trees from Bender's.   Weirdly, they are already in fruit, but it's been a strange year for my other deciduous fruit trees too.

Thank you so much!  Between you and Jeff Hagen, I should be able to score an Angie without having to go all the way down to Fairchild in July.  (And I'm not the only one looking for this cultivar.)

You do have a grove too. I saw your mango trees. Some are up and commers. I think you'll have mangoes for sale this year or next. I bought muscadines from you.

Hopefully if no more fruit drops we will have a few extras,it only held fruit on one side of the tree for some odd reason, will keep u posted, the few angie mango we grafted are not of good quality, again might have been poor rootstock,as soon as we get our crop and buds begin to swell i will post it for anyone who would like some budwood and they can graft their own.Keep in touch I will be more than happy to give you some budwood

Glad you guys enjoyed the video, John travels the country doing these videos,we were happy to host him and have gotten a phenomenal response from it, he has a fantastic following and it's cool to see what people do around the country,we all are definitely on the money when it comes to creating your own edible landscapes,it seems that this trend will continue for years to come and we will all be better for it! Again thank you all for your comments, this site is of great value to anyone who wants to grow their own food either as a hobby or pleasure, and the great part is we get to enjoy the "fruit of our labor" as the saying goes! We hope this summer to have an open house to invite all forum members to stop by and have a meet and greet! Maybe we will do it the week of the mango festival so some of the out of town members that are coming to the mango festival can come by and say hello! Again thanks to all,MIKE

Great idea Mike, to do it the weekend of the Fairchild Mango festival. Perhaps you open both Saturday and Sunday? I would definitely come over late Saturday. I was at Farichild two weeks ago, have no intention driving down there for their mango chaos. People actually race to grab the mango trees they want when the gate opens, like on a Black Friday. But if I can meetup with other forum members at your place that would be great. And not just forum members....... other backyard fruit tree growers, permaculture people. I am 12 miles north of you

I will see if I can set it up for that saturday afternoon,so we can sit around and tell some war stories,Lol, I just have to figure out a schedule, that way anyone going to the Mango festival in the morning will have time to get together in the afternoon, just would be nice to put some faces behind the members of this forum,I am kind of centerley located between Palm beach county and Dade so if enough people on the forum are interested we can definitely put something together. I figure it would be great for a good get together without the madness of the mango festival,I will keep everyone posted and see if it is a go!

Hi,

I paid Bender's Grove a visit today. Mike is a really nice guy and he is full of helpful growing advise. And those tall paper bags are the neatest thing when you stove a tall plant into a car.

Today I am finally convinced that what I had thought was a delicious Malay Apple, was in fact a Wax Jambu.  I just hadn't known that a Wax Jambu could have the shape, colour and size of a Malay Apple.   My wife found this lovely blog for me in Indonesian with fantastic photos of about 10 wax jambu varieties.

But im really not sure ill be coming with my father, and family the trees are for his home so ultimately the decisions up to him. I just try to lead him in the direction of what i want to enjoy eating.  ;D. And its always a fun outing with the girlfriend and family discussing "oh those are awesome, buy that!" my girlfriend and I. Then my mothers response " Buy a house already, stop planting the weird stuff in my yard, doesn't anyone like apples anymore?, whats that ugly fruit i like? plant more of those.(soursop)".

Mr Bender has tari's burgundy grape which is new being propagated by Pine Island Nursery and was a favorite there this summer (says Mr Bender) but variety has been around for a while. I bought one yesterday at Bender's Grove and have high hopes for it. It is a bunch grape cross between muscadine and northern type grape.

Here is a photo and information>>>   http://www.twigsandberries.net/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=159 (http://www.twigsandberries.net/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=159)
"Tari's Burgundy is part muscadine and part bunch grape, hybridized in the early 80's, characterized by disease resistence and superior flavor. This grape can be used as a fine table grape, for winemaking or for jelly. The grapes are burgundy in color, 1/2"-5/8" in size and produce 30-45 grapes in bunches."

(http://s18.postimg.cc/s5oww79z9/tari_s_burgundy_grape.jpg) (http://postimg.cc/image/s5oww79z9/)

This Harry Hausman's, his photo of his vine as found over here>>> http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/tropicalfruits/msg0719415810916.html (http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/tropicalfruits/msg0719415810916.html)

1 Acre Home Orchard in South Florida Yields Over a Thousand of Pounds of Tropical Fruit a Year (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pel0PJIBMfI#)

That is how I found out about him.  Have gone to his  place several times for trees.  He has a very good selection.  And the prices are low.

Good morning.  A question......do you know the background of these Black Gold x Tabouey jaks you got a hold of?  My very best jak is a seedling bearing that name.  Mine came from the breeding  program at Fairchild and their Just Jakfruit Festival they had back in 1998...I think it was.  I am sure others bought that cross that was being offered at that time.  Which brings me to the question.....are your plants grafted and are from material from a tree that came from the same breeding program as mine did?  Or are these new seedlings from a fruit that came from one of those trees?

Unfortunately cannot comment conclusively regarding the tree from which these grafts are taken, but mine, from the same breeding program, is firm fleshed and quite cold tolerant.  So far, in fact, every bit as cold tolerant as Black Gold.  Neither BG nor BG x Tabouey has shown ill effects at 28 F at my house.

Love me a nice publix sub for lunch, but waiting 30 minutes for the lady behind the counter to make the sub is crazy lol. Even when you're the only person there it still takes 10 minutes. They all need to be sent to Subway school.

Red jabos sound interesting - those get big or can they be grown in container?

We'll see on what time we can get there tomorrow. Probably taking the kids on the pirate ship in the morning, but need to at least pick up another mango (thinking coconut cream) for us and a loquat for the mother in law. Will check out the red jabos if any are still there.

Do you have any information about the "Miami" Soursop? Like is it fiberless or how is the production and taste.
Title: Re: Bender's Tropical Grove
Post by: gunnar429 on March 23, 2014, 04:51:58 PM
what i was told is that it was grafted from a tree in miami that is productive.....not really a named cultivar (as i understand), just a good soursop that was worthy of propagating more....not sure about the fiber though.

Title: Re: Bender's Tropical Grove
Post by: fruitlovers on March 23, 2014, 10:07:00 PM
I think you should be able to tell from the leaf color whether that soursop is fiberless. I believe all the fiberless types have a light blueish green color on the leaves. Very different from regular soursops.

Post by: Andrew on March 23, 2014, 11:16:44 PM
Wish Soursop were more well known so more work could be done to improve the fruit. I've only tasted a seedling that I would rate about a 7.5 but read about grafted varieties that are a 9 or 10 "like the Whitmans". That could supposedly even beat the Cherimoya in taste. Please share if you get a chance to try one and tell us how it compares. There's almost no information online about grafted Guanabanas.

How are your Day avocado and Lara carambola doing?
Title: Re: Bender's Tropical Grove
Post by: gunnar429 on March 31, 2014, 04:09:45 PM
The day avocado is still in the pot, but it is doing well...actually has a lot of little avocados on it.  Had a nice branch structure and a very thick trunk compared to the other 3-gallons i usually buy.

The lara gave about 20 fruit (only gets a few hours of direct sun, if that) from oct-dec, and it is very nice....juicy and sweet, and good size as well.  I let them ripen until falling off (almost orange in color).  When juiced, it was OUTSTANDING!!  I liked it so much that i went back and got a sri k. a few weeks ago.  These trees are SO productive.

I had been thinking about custard apple for a while so zipped over and got one San Pablo variety. My understanding is that both the Fernandez and San Pablo that Mike has are from Lara nursery in Homestead area
Also got alano sapodilla

Both the above fruits are winter into spring and that's mostly why I got them.

after sampling that fernandez, i would plant CA even if it was in the height of mango season! delicious.

One thing people do here and are going to learn the hard way...... Is that in Florida there is a mango rush hour, peak season say from June 1st to July 23rd. Varies from year to year. What good is it have so many varieties if they all come in at the same time? You better get ready to sell or give a lot away. Or dry and freeze some. So I look for mango trees outside this peak season.  Also I pick avocado trees that get ripe fruit at different times

Beyond this I want fruit trees outside the total mango season which can be 5 months.....it was last year! I was kinda stupid about this and started late.... But my recent purchases have been carambola, sapodilla, custard apple that are outside the mango season. So is my strawberry guava and citrus. I planted citrus long ago but it always failed due to my high ph soil. Carambola is kind of of a citrus substitute for my situation plus now I am growing citrus in pots instead of in the high ph soil

O.K. So here it is! This weekend Pine Island Nursery will be at the Brevard Rare Fruit Council show on Sat April 26th. They brought with them an incredible selection of tropical fruit trees, including a handful of "Galaxy" mango trees in 3 gallon size. Boys and girls there is no need to call PIN tomorrow or Saturday to buy them at the nursery. Benders Tropical Grove will have all the remaining trees available also for purchase Saturday through Sunday or till we sell out. Both at the show and Benders Grove will be first come first serve, we will not be reserving or holding any available trees. There is a small available amount available both at the show and at Benders Grove. So at 8am Sat in Brevard or 10am in Davie you have the Opportunity to get a Galaxy mango tree I will be selling the 3 gallon trees for $35. I believe they will be the same price at the show. Mike

Of course, I couldn't go without picking up a Galaxy mango. While at Bender's Grove, Mike was kind enough to talk me into a Pakistani Mulberry and a Miami Sour Sop.  They were finally determined to be must haves, of course.  My existing Pakistani mulberry has gone into decline after being in the ground for about 17 years and now supports a Vietnamese red Dragon Fruit.  The sour sop is my fourth attempt to plant a tree that can provide a mature fruit produced in my yard.  Thanks Mike.....great trees, great prices, as always.

Rob,

I already over paid for my Galaxy as it was a limited release from the forum auction.  If only it were grafted by Campbell, it would be a "true collectors item" worth the inflated rate Sheehan bled me for.   Perhaps getting the handful of trees on the Excalibur list that I don't have will ease my woes.  Please try not to slip me the Coc this time Rob.

In general,  a grafted tree will have a better root system.   Some tree do not graft well so they are air layered.   The Emperor specifically is very finicky with air layering however does do well when grafted.

Grafted trees have better root system, less likely to be knocked over in a hurricane. Still if you read
Whitman's book he favored air layers, because if knocked over can resprout from trunk and still be same cultivar, whereas if a grafted tree breaks below graft line you've lots the cultivar.

pretty cool!  it's hard to find those varieties, let alone a decent sized tree.

My figs don't do well. Ishia and Br Turkey. So both of these___ Texas Blue giant and violet de Bordeaux____  Do OK in Florida heat and humidity? Do you see spring and fall production by them? Or summer? Winter?  Are you using fungicide?
thanks!

I will vouch for Kent and Gold nugget as being solid choices for August mango production in South Florida. This production coming after the peak of mango season when we get inundated. Both are kind of late but not as late as Keitt which is the latest mango tree
My 2014 Kent and Gold nugget trees have mangoes on them today the 9th of August.

My Gold nugget tree started fruit production sooner from when planted than my Kent tree. Kent fruits are larger and reddish. Which entices mango thieves
Gold nugget turns from green to yellow when ripe so is not so attracting to thieves

Dittos on that!!!!  I have often gotten a good idea when a particular variety mango, avocado, sapodilla  etc is ripe by referring back to Benders Grove posting on fruit for sale. Obviously I do this so that I have a good idea what season a fruit tree I am thinking about planting will yield ripe fruit.

I most definitely want to know what time a year a certain variety mango, avocado, sapodilla  etc is coming in ripe. Or to be more accurate, when it tends to come in ripe.

I would think your grove/fruit stand would be an oasis for them.

Persimmons are dioecious trees. I believe most named cultivars, like the Triumph etc., are self-fruitful female trees. They are capable of producing fruit on their own, however without a male tree near by, there will be no fertilization and thus no seeds.

:)

There has been some discussion about this variety in the past and positively identifying it.  Other than Julia Lara, who described it just as you did with nothing more, nobody seems to have any infor on the variety.  I did see the mother plant and it had a beautiful bushy growth habit although I dont kniw if that was natural or from trimming.

7 gallon Nam Doc Mai mango-- Very nice stout, branched out, thick 1.4" trunk NDM  ($60)

Canistel Oro ....being exchanged next week for Fairchild #2 canistel. I prefer the smaller fruits on Fairchild #2. Have never tasted it. I have only eaten lots of Bruce canistel.

Soursop
Guarana
Black pepper

S-Sop and NDM are for a friend

Canistel

That's a beautiful Nam Doc. I'm trying to decide on the Nam Doc or the Maha Chanok. Both are suppose to be incredibly sweet with the Maha having a unique complex flavor that some apparently really love or hate. I personally have only tried the Nam Doc and if you haven't had the chance to try one yet I sure you won't be disappointed. It will definitely satisfy your sugar craving for the day.

I have not tasted Maha but on Saturday when I bought the Nam Doc Mai (at Benders) there was another one that looked the same. Stout leafy and in 7 gallon.

Not much of a decision. Maha for sure. Taste better and doesn't split constantly.

Yup, everything I have read says shade....they are a vine though so make sure you give it enough room/keep it in check.

Black pepper is not as vigorous as say passionfruit.  It can be grown on a fence, large trellis or on a chupah type structure which would be very decorative as well as functional.

Pepper plant is fairly easy to grow in a pot. I grew one to fruition here in Maryland in 2 year frame. I would recommend a medium size pot at least, and give it a trellis, but it doesn't mind rewrapping. I've seen farms of black pepper where they grow up vertical poles, no other structures. They can take lower temperatures, but not for long. I agree they're extremely decorative... gives that tropical feel the way the leaves glisten and dark green.

Ya, I think the rain has something to do with it...

Maybe you saw them during a drought?

I remember the posh te looked like hell during a drought, but as of lately with all the rain it looks great...maybe the same for the illama?  Or they drench them?

they are early bearing!  most of the time they start bearing in about 5-7 yrs....unlike the most common form of jaboticaba (Sabara) which usually takes 7-10 yrs from seed.

How is your Tari Burgundy Bunch doing? Mine is the best performing grape I have. Putting out more young bunches than any of my muscadines in any year. And the bunches are thriving and getting bigger. I have bunches of varying sizes meaning second and (probably) third blooms

Mr Bender usually has Tari

my Tari coming along:      you bet I am excited!

Good that your Tari are doing well!!!
BTW---I am talking all of my muscadines in every year have not done as well as Tari this year after 2 years in the ground

Here is more Dunstan grape info and few photos of Dunstan hybrids (http://www.ibiblio.org/grapebreeders/Articles/Bob_Zehnder/Bob.htm). My bet is that Dunstan's Dream is a nice black grape muscadine x vinifera and growing and being eaten (soon) at Pine Island nursery  (Homestead Florida) where they also have Tari growing.  Also propagating both at Pine Island

There is supposedly a white fleshed Vietnamese guava that is different from the white fleshed Thai (the Thai is sometimes referred to as "seedless" however from the ones I have seen do contain some seeds, just a very limited number.  I have not tasted the Vietnamese but those who ask for it say that it is on the sweeter side.

Thanks for the info. rob. The vietnamese does have seeds, and it's sweet when eaten green -- which is a huge boon, since ripe fruit without larvae don't really exist here. My little urban fruit hunter found a tree. The fruit is delightful, and the owner has offered to let us make a layer, but I'm too lazy :-). Hoping to find one to buy instead :-).

Does the Tari growth habit exhibit more characteristics from its muscadine heritage?  Just wanted to get an idea for my Trellis.  As it stands I planted it between two posts about 20' apart 42" off the ground.  I'll be attempting two cordons, one in either direction, and hopefully the canes will "drape" downward.  How is yours setup?

Okay.  When I'm sure of what I need and when I can swing by, I'll call you.  Right now I'm thinking Mahachanok (which you had on July 22) and Lemon Meringue (PPK).  I'm looking for a late variety, as well.  I had the chance to try Venus from 2 different locations, and I'm going to pass on that one.  I'm waiting to try Beverly.

This weekends fruit availibility:
Sapodilla: numerous varieties
Mamey: Magana, Pace
Caimito: Purple
Starfruit

New Arrivals:
Rollinia (seedling)
Ilama (seedling) large pink fruit
Fernandez custard apple(grafted)
SanPablo(grafted)
Fairchild #2 canistel (grafted)
Green and Purple caimito (grafted)
All are in 3 gallon pots $35 each first come basis!

Thanks for the beautiful Fernandez custard apple tree. It didn't take long to produce a enormous fruit. Not the typical Sugar appple\Atemoya\Cherimoya taste or texture but very creamy and fruity. Light years ahead of the typical seedling red custard apples and a keeper for sure.

Nice Andrew!  My little tree is holding 3 fruit.  The seedling I planted a year before flowered like crazy but did not hold a single fruit, even with hand pollination.

Hey there, Mike. That Taiwanese guava I got from you last year has been incredible. It produces softball sized guavas (HUGE!) that are very sweet when eaten mature green. Very productive too. Definitely the best guava I've had in my garden.

Is this variety free of fruit flies, Jeff? Or is eating mature green the only way to eat guavas in South Florida?

I haven't let one get to maturity yet, but I"m pretty sure it would have fly larvae if I did :-). They are very delicious mature green though.
