Post by: Mike T on September 16, 2015, 03:57:06 AM
Today a friend left a few fruit on my doorstep and I will eat them all tonight.

This rollinia selection is very sweet and firm commanding high prices in the markets.

Z4 abius have an orange tinge being deeper yellow than most types.

Juicy pearls have thinner skin than typical starapples and have a nice taste. They are like big buttons being a little flattened on the poles.

Gday Mike,

I have a couple of Rollinia trees and get a few fruit but they are only "Bunnings" varieties. I also have an Abui that I grew from seed that I got from a friend. I would be interested in buying some of the seed from that Rollinia and Z4 Abui. Would you be interested in making a few dollars? Is there a knack when picking Rollinia to keep the knobs on the fruit from going black?

Cheers
Gary

Gday, I am doing ok. I am located in Darwin Australia. Myself and my wife have a 5 acre block on the outskirts of Darwin at a town called Humpty Doo. We have cleared 75% of the native trees on our block and have around 35 Black Sapote trees (berniker, Mossman and maher) We also have around 20 purple mangosteen trees (not producing yet). We are hoping to increase our Mangosteen population to about 100 over the next 2 or 3 years. We also have another 3 varieties of Black Sapote that we will graft from soon. We have just started to experiement with grafting and have been fairly lucky so far to have a few successes. Currently we are trying to approach graft some yellow mangosteen onto our purple trees, not real sure how this is going yet as the grafts were only done about 3 weeks ago. We have read most threads on here about purple mangosteen grafting etc and are grateful of the information we have found on this website.

Cheers

Dinga if it is not the top end or the north but the far north with a bunnings that leaves only one place you can be.The rollinia is a super productive improved commercial type.
Thanks Raul I have just a few seeds.

The trees of this rolinia type are productive.

Dinga humpty do for fruit growing not humpty don't as there climate is good for equatorial even if the soil is ordinary. The heat of now until December is a bit full on for mangosteen, durian, abiu, durian and a few other out in the open without shade unless they are fertilized a lot and watered daily. Is it rapid creek markets that they will be sold at?
T series abius are really good locally developed territorian varieties and I think T25 and T31 are the good ones.Gray abius don't go well there but z4 and z2 should be ok and E4 might be too broad leafed.Lim was a NT resident for a while and did much with tropucal fruit trials there.I tried rambutans grown south of Darwin a couple of years ago and was not fussed but they could be good. There is a big farm with desert king dragon fruit as well.I will PM you.

Mike, do you have any other pictures of the trellised trees?  I am trying to trellis some subropicals and wouldn't mind seeing how some mature trees have been pruned.

The apparent latex is really milky juice that tastes good.

Hi Mike T! Is it peak Abiu season down there? I know we on opposite schedules and my friends Abiu has a bumper crop at the moment. I am new to this fruit and I was wondering if there are multiple crops or different cultivars that allow you to stretch out the production. These are one of my new favorite fruits and have been planting all of the seeds and my friend also gave me a small seedling tree. I can't wait to see if there are any variations in my seedlings. I think the original seed for his well established tree originated in Brazil over 20 years ago.

Abius of a few varieties fruit several times a year and the timing is erratic but summer is the peak I suppose. Each tree will fruit at a different time each year and at different times in various locations. Oddly enough trees in one location seem to coordinate flowering a bit within varieties.

Thanks for the info. I am now on the active search for some grafted varieties and budwood from my fellow fruit society members. If I can fruit them in large pots and they sync up their flowering I could diddle around with cross pollinating and see if I can breed something superior. From what I read the seedlings are moderately precocious. These are so so good and just sweet enough where I could steadily eat 3 or 4 a day. I don't know why they aren't a popular dooryard tree around here. I would think these would fetch a great price at the farmers market as well.

I can eat more than 4 in a day and people may get put off with low quality seedy types with latex if the don't have a good one first up.They and good starapples are really under rated fruits that deserve to be everywhere where the climate suits. Rob I didn't answer your question.
Tatura trellising is proving the best for tropical trees in confined spaces or where there are storms and cyclones.Trees are trained along wires strung between poles in rows in a big Vinyard style.

Thanks Mike, I have 22meters of tatura and maybe 35m of espalier with a mix of trees (nashi, dwarf apple, carambola, mulberry,  loquat, guava, peach,  nectarine, rollinia, soursop, abiu, jambu, black sapote, canistel, jabs, kwai muk).  But I haven't found any good info on pruning and cordon replacement for the sapotes, annonas and kwai muk. Regretting the formal jaboticaba espalier a bit since they want to grow in all directions, but commited to it now. Informal fan would have been the best for them in retrospect. I read an article that mentioned the fruit salad row at the salleras farm and it would be interesting to know how the different tress did. I wonder if it would be worthwhile to do new world garcinias on one. Sticking with traditional pruning on mamey, mango, jackfruit and eugenias.

Bummer about the daleys forum

Not all trees are suited to particular styles of pruning but all can be kept contained to some degree. Those with multiple small branches and upright growth style are more difficult.
I contributed a bit to daleys as well so a pity it has gone up in smoke.

More doorstep action with juicy pearl and DPI Gold starapples today. The DPI Golds in the pictures are 550g to 650g and the juicy pearls are 180g to 210g.I have been eating them today and they really are nice tasting fruit with the typical purples and greens a long way behind these.

the DPI gold Caimitos has very nice color,  how would they rank comparing with the alba selection Mike?

These are reject fruit that I received and they have a few marks so not at their best. The variety Alva is similar to DPI Gold in appearance with less pink flush, more yellow colouration of the skin and slightly smaller in size. The taste is as good as the DPI Gold.

Mike would you consider the DPI gold to be superior in taste to the juicy pearl?   I know it's obviously bigger.   Looks like about 3x bigger.   How do the flavors compare?

DPI Gold is better from my palates' perspective. Describing flavours with starapples and their relatives is challenging but you can taste the similarity with both being a little more complex than standard purple starapples. We may need the wine vernacular to describe overtones, undercurrents, disposition, nose, aroma and other taste characteristics of fruit,
