Tropical Fruit Discussion / Flowerhouse Conservatory greenhouse as a season extender?

Hello all. So i was looking at some cheap greenhouse options and i found something called the "Flowerhouse Conservatory" greenhouse for about 300 bucks at walmart. It's about 9 ft diameter and 10 ft high. I was wondering if anyone had experience with this as a season extender to add a couple extra months to the growing season? Thanks.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Nursery in NY carrying some PIN trees (plus other tropicals)!

I visited Hicks Nursery on Long Island yesterday and lo and behold they had a table with Miracle Fruit trees (three gallon, flowering), Carambola trees, Dragon Fruit, and Passion Fruit (all three gallon.) All of these plants were 50 dollars. They also had some fukushu kumqats (40 dollars i believe)? Last year, they had some other citrus too, such as Meyer Lemons (i bought one, it's doing great), Meiwa Kumquats, Key Lime, and i think the variegated pink lemon. This is in new york. Love this place.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Plant that has a large taproot started from seed in a rootpruning pot?

What would happen? to elaborate, I'm referring to something like an Asimna that would usually have a large taproot that would make it difficult to grow in a container, or a mangosteen say. Would the early root-pruning make the plant able to survive well without a taproot or would that have the same effect as damaging the root when transplanting (which can be pretty bad for something like a pawpaw). I'm wondering because early rootpruning would work and safely remove a taproot from a plant that usually has very little lateral roots, that would make it far easier to containerize, which is what i have to do here.

Just wondering, i have a mango ( a pickering) that i have in a pot that i got last fall. IT hasn't really flushed out al all since i got it (has been indoors in lowis light). I really don't care much about the fruit, but i would like to just have it push some flowers this spring just so i can say it did. I've read a lot of posts here talking about cold snaps trigering blooming, so mu question is...
Before i set out the mango in the spring, would i be able to indue flowering by putting it out a bit early and exposing it to some temperatures in the 50s? if so, how long would it need to be exposed? andif this does work for the mango, what other fruits could it work for?

So you're on vacation in some fruit paradise. There, you find a variety of some fruit or something that you really love and want to bring back germplasm. However, you have no clue how to / lack the ability to get a phytosanitary certificate for the plant matter. What do you do?
essentially, if you don't know how to get a phyto for something in a foreign country, how do you do that, and if you can't what can you do to bring back the germplasm (legal options preferred

So the question i would like to ask is what do you guys think would be the best avocado variety to attempt to grow in containers? I have heard of holiday, wurtz, and gwen as candidates, but the comparisons between holiday and wurtz always vary as to which one is smaller, and i have not seen a comparison between gwen and any others. I have also heard that there are other better varieties out there? and to add to my confusion, I had always read that wurtz was a horrible tasting cado, but then i saw somewhere that wurtz is one of the best? someone please help me through this much so i can get an avo tree next year .

I'm so happy! i wish i could post pics but my darn connector cable is missing and of course they couldnt use a simple mini-usb. I got 2 three gallon trees from PIN, a pickering and a makok, and they look as if i just picked them out of the nursery myself this morning! They are really healthy and simply amazing!

So this is what i'm thinking. I have a bunch of steel wool lying around, and steel wool is very easy and safe to burn. The result is iron oxide. How good is pure iron oxide as a supplement for plants?

Hello all. I recently had my interest in SW (self watering containers) rekindled, and i am thinking of it as a viable option next year to put some of my tropicals in. However, i don't know if all tropicals would enjoy a steady supply of water. I have heard that citrus for example likes having periodic dry periods in between waterings. SO would it like a SWC?
So essentially, what plants would do well in this and what plants prefer a more staggered, varied water supply?

I google this and all i get is global warming stuff. I need a surface of a common object that will stay warm 24/7 (for seed germination) that is not a fridge. My fridge top never seems particularly warm, definitely not in the 70s or 80s needed for some plants. So what should i use?

Ok, so i have a bunch of questions about this whole permit business that i want cleared up, and i'm sure these are questions some other poor souls have been wondering also (why can't the USDA make this stuff clear, huh?). I can't really find these questions anywhere, and the only other way to get answers seems to be to call the USDA ("umm, hi. I'm a teenage kid that wants to import some plant matter into the U.S., grow it out, and propagate it, but i have no clue what i'm doing. Can you help?" Like that's gonna go anywhere.). So here i go:
About getting a permit, is there an age requirement? I have sort of assumed that you would have to be 18 (which i'm not) to get one. Can minors have an import permit?
After sending in the application, is there an interview that has to be done?
for small lots of seed, must i specify all the types i wish to import?
For plant material, how can i add another species? do i have to resubmit the permit? will there be another interview?
Once i get the permit, what do i do with it? HOW THE HECK DO I USE IT?!?!?!?!?!?!? do i send a copy to the shipper? Do i keep a copy on my person if i the germplasm is on my person? Does it work the same for small lots of seed and plant material?
will i still need a phyto?
When importing, must i send the material to a facility for some sort of screening? does this cost money? if so, how much?
