Tropical Fruit Discussion / Visiting Hawaii - Recommendations?
« on: May 31, 2018, 08:48:31 AM »
So I'll be in Honolulu for a week, and was hoping for some current plant and or tropical fruit recommendations ... e.g. where to buy, when, best selection? I'm going to try to make it to Frankie's. Is sending plants from Hawaii an easy process? Anyone ever done it? Thanks in advance. :)

Hi All,
This is a bit of a long post, so bear with me if you want the story. It's been a while since I have created a new thread or posted. It's been a busy Summer and a lot has been going on, but I wanted to share some experiences with you all.

A little backstory. I was fascinated last year, when our forum friend Raul offered to sell us scions from the infamous Limoncillo/Luc's Garcinia we have all been clammoring to try. Unfortunately, I have very little experience grafting, I had no rootstock, and only a slight hope any scions would make it here and still be viable. I'm in Maryland, so I also have a short window to do this (The Summer). I figured, well somebody is bound to sell one. I looked high and low, and couldn't find one for sale. The only options to have any chance at fruiting became clear ... to wait for my little seedlings to maybe grow fruit in a decade ... or to try to graft them on my own(still a longshot on that fruit, but still).

So this year I set out to be prepared for Raul's sale. I've only ever grafted 3 times before this. A failed attempt at Rollinia, a 2nd failed attempt at the same Rollinia, and a failed Citrus graft experiment earlier this Spring ... so I watched Adam's Garcinia Laterifolia grafting video probably a thousand times. I like to think I'm a pretty quick learner as well. I then read up on advice here (Many thanks Carlos ) using Shick Injector Blades and ordered some and picked up a xacto knife from WMart. I had "buddy/budded tape"(AM Leonard) from my failed attempts, and so I gathered all my materials.

I ordered Limoncillo(Luc's Garcinia), Mangosteen(because who doesn't want a grafted mangosteen?), and for fun Garcinia Brasiliensis scions. Thanks to a kind friend in PR, who I'm very grateful to, I obtained 5 near-sapling size and 1 extra seedling size Achachairu. I already had one seedling size(from yet another friend years ago), which I didn't want to touch, and one intermedia which I wanted to use for variation. They came in time to be potted up, and given time to adjust and then I came home from a trip to NYC to find a package of scions ... a couple days later, because my absent minded father didn't give me all my mail when I got back. That was a bit frustrating, anyway I rushed to prep all my materials and my trees.

These were such big beautiful Achachairu, I couldn't help but set one aside. I'd like to have fruit of this as well some day.

I grafted up 5 of the Achachairu along with my 1 Intermedia.

This one I grafted 2 Limoncillo scions on 1 very healthy sapling. It may have been a bad idea, but I learned from this. It failed and has now pushed new Achachairu leaves from the nodes. I was really hoping at least one would take.

The Intermedia with 1 Limoncillio scion also failed. It has pushed really lush new leaves, which is nice, since it pretty much sat for 2 years pushing nothing.

This is 1 Mangosteen on 1 Achachairu. It was a gamble to try an Asian Garcinia on a New World Garcinia(Rheedia). It is still deciding what it wants to do. I keep any rootstock growth pruned off, but still see no scion growth. Still holding out hope for it though. The scion has not shriveled.

The same goes for the Garcinia Brasiliensis scion. I put both of the 2 that I got onto 1 Achachairu, and the side graft failed, but the top graft is still green, just not pushing anything. Fingers crossed, and maybe it will.

Now the fun part. My possible success...

Going into this, I kept up my optimism, and almost on the same timeline as the failures were these two possible successes, and I am saying little prayers that they flourish. I was over the moon when I saw the following, and still am.

Pretty soon after grafting, I observed, no dying scion. A very good sign. My previous attempts at grafting had resulted in a pretty quickly dying scion. Then about a week or two later I started to see the littlest spear of new leaves popping through the buddy tape. I was over the moon. It somehow made all the trouble worth it. The following show what it's at about now and it continues to grow. :) It was my only Limoncillo that has pushed and didn't shrivel.

The following is a Mangosteen scion. This made me equally happy. My only concern with this is that it had a long time to push through the buddy tape, and the scion is really dark midway and below. Anyone know if this is rot or something else bad?

Thanks all for reading. I'll keep all of you updated as long as you want, and if you have any questions or comments please feel free. I realize I may be "jinxing" these attempts, but I couldn't help but share with my friends here. :) I know I have to baby these until they really heal and harden at the graft site, so I guess my only question is when to remove the buddy tape? :)

Citrus General Discussion / Sumo/Dekopon Available in Supermarkets
« on: January 21, 2017, 02:29:18 PM »
The season is here. Saw cases of 7 Sumo(Dekopon) for sale at Wegman's for 13.99 as well as pre-peeled plastic containers of them for 4.98 a lb. Thought I'd pass that along.

Citrus Buy, Sell, & Trade / Looking for Changshou Kumquat budwood
« on: November 12, 2016, 11:09:44 PM »
Anyone have changshou budwood?

6
Anyone have cuttings of syzygium aromaticum?

Okay, so just a question that is a bit hard to find an answer to. In fact, I haven't found a definitive one. So, you go to all the trouble of keeping certain substances out of your garden soil ... but have you ever wondered if the plastic pots you use, or the ink in the permanent marker or the graphite in your pencil may leach into your soil? I honestly can't find a good answer ... just because it's "non-toxic" is it okay to use in your organic garden? If "non-toxic" is the only criteria, well then wouldn't certain "non-organic" fertilizers also qualify? It's more than a bit confusing to me.

Citrus Buy, Sell, & Trade / Looking for Citrus Amblycarpa
« on: August 14, 2016, 06:28:37 PM »
I had a beautiful citrus amblycarpa that I grew from seed. It died last Winter and I didn't root cuttings. I am so sad about it. Anyone know where to get seeds or seedlings? I can't get them from Frankie's either ... it would cost more than my house.

Greetings. If anyone knows where I can get the Kajang Starfruit and/or Nam Phet Longan shipped to me I would love to know. Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Is anyone growing Korlan?
« on: June 28, 2016, 11:49:30 PM »
I have some Korlan growing, and I was wondering what experiences folks may have had with it? I have read the information here on the tff, but there is not much about the fruit, whether it clings to the seed, or the height of the tree, etc.

Any personal experiences? Thanks

Looking for grafted Abiu. Thanks

Hi, as a lot of you know a fellow forum member on here, Raul, is going to collect scions from a Mexican Garcinia Limoncillo tree. I would love to be able to order some scions from him, but don't have suitable rootstock. This is sort of a last ditch effort ... does anybody have any Garcinia rootstock (something with a 1/4" diameter or larger ) they would be willing to sell and ship to me? I would need to know as soon as possible. Thanks a ton, y'all. :)

Does anyone have a Vanilla Planifolia aka Vanilla orchid that they wouldn't mind giving/trading/selling(but hopefully not expensive) a cutting of? I'm just looking for a little starter cutting. Thanks :)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Wishing you all well :)
« on: December 31, 2015, 07:46:47 PM »
Since there's no longer an Off Topic, this is just well wishes to you all on this New Year's Eve.

Some of you may know I was away in the Philippines last month, but sadly enough, no real news on tropical fruits aside from eating a few in season things here and there. Lame, I know. Anyway, hope to see some good new topics and tons more pics this coming year. Cheers :)

Citrus Buy, Sell, & Trade / Small Kaffir Lime
« on: September 22, 2015, 11:08:31 PM »
Anyone selling small seedlings or seeds of Kaffir lime? Seeds can be bought on ebay, but seedlings would be better :)

Is there a true dwarf of Anacardium Occidentale or is Anacardium Microcarpum the dwarf cashew? Anacardium humilis seems to be for medicinal use, while it produces nuts, they aren't the same. The a. micro seems to be a smaller tree, with the same nuts, and maybe smaller fruit. Any of you have more information?

I'm looking for Broussonetia Luzonicus seeds or trees. Male trees preferably. Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Artificial Lighting in the Winter
« on: August 28, 2015, 09:11:50 AM »
Is there a consensus on what the best lights to use to supplement the sun light in the Winter? My plants will be brought in soon, and I'd like to get a good fixture to give them more light. I'd like to know what brand and what W, nothing too big, but enough to give them a little extra. Looking to buy a small space heater too. Any suggestions, guys?

Anyone ever buy anything from pupuk_pupuk on ebay? I'd love to know what your interaction was like? Did you plants arrive okay?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Anyone shipped plants from Asia to US?
« on: August 09, 2015, 06:17:05 PM »
I may be returning through a port with no USDA office and even if I do, the plants will need to be inspected in the same way that plants through the mail will. Anyone tried shipping plants to the US and had success? I have my permit to import plants via baggage, but an amendment to import via mail won't be too difficult.

Anyone selling a large Shiranui Citrus? Thinking about ordering from Harris, but would like something a bit bigger than what they sell. Thanks :)

Anyone selling a large Shiranui Dekopon Citrus seedling? I'm tempted to order one from Harris Citrus, but they seem to ship out smaller seedlings. Thanks :)

I'd like to share a couple surprises in my garden. The first is an Achachairu, thin leaf, from a friend here on the forum. I kept a bag over the plant in order to trap moisture, and kept it watered this past Winter, but sometime around December the plant turned completely brown and looked dead. I kept watering it anyway, and In April, brought it out and put it in my plastic greenhouse. It still looked dead, but I kept watering it periodically, mostly thinking it was a goner, but I was digging around one day looking for a label, and this pot had been lying nearly on the ground for a while, and I picked it up to see if the label was in the pot. Lo and behold, a little sprout came from the base. As you can see from the pictures, it has really come back. Can anyone tell me if I should prune the smaller shoot to encourage a base trunk?

This is the plant when moved into the greenhouse. Looks dead, haven't removed the bag yet.

This is the plant after discovering the new shoot.

This is how the plant looks now. Any advice on whether to pinch the small shoot off?

Next, my broad leaf Achachairu. This plant was a beautiful 3ft tall plant that I was given a 6inch seedling off back in 2011 from another friend on here, and it had made it through our Winters(in Maryland) like a champ in the den, but this past Winter, it just kept declining. The scale were pretty bad this past Winter.
It saddened me that I thought it may have died, but I kept it in the back of my greenhouse, and hoped it would put new leaves out. It seemed like it didn't, until I was cleaning out dead plants this past weekend.  I will also not use the altered gritty mix, that I used, which was a gritty mix but with more peat, because I knew it would not work in the Winter. Well, I need even more peat and organic material, because my Winters dry my potted plants out like crazy. My new mix has plenty of peat and worm castings, but perlite too, for drainage. ;D

My Jaboticaba Grimal from Adam was a small plant when I got it last Spring, but it has really loved my care. I planted it in my old mix, which was mostly peat and bark, and never replanted into my gritty mix. It loves the water. Anyway, in the Winter I kept it in the bay window and kept a bag over it. It grew even in December-January. It has since exploded. I need advice on how to prune it. I hope you Jabo experts can tell me.  :D

Here's the progression from out of the house to now.

My White Jade pineapple was doing pretty well too, but when it was knocked over in a storm, via my entire greenhouse knocking over.  I then overwatered it this past Winter, and noticed in the Spring that the center was rotted. I hoped it would grow a new shoot from the middle and it did. I wasn't sure if it would, but now I know.

So I suppose what I'd like to say is, it feels good to find our plants have bounced back and are troopers. Tropical plants can be fragile, but can be tough too. :)

I'll end this with a few more pictures.

My seedling Pulasan. Made it through the Winter. Growing new leaves.

A few of my plants ...

A new Lychee from Adam.

and a couple pictures from my favorite place in DC, the USBG(botanical garden)
