Tropical Fruit Discussion / Germinating Duguetia Seeds
« on: May 26, 2015, 08:35:10 PM »
The discussion of germinating duguetia seeds seems to either go to using GA3 or direct sowing and some soaking in water. Are there any good first hand experiences and what did you use?

Would like to buy a Dwarf Ylang Ylang if anybody grows this or has extra seedlings. Same for the White Champaca, Michelia x Alba. Would prefer to order from a forum member before a site. :)

This isn't tropical fruit, but thought the same people who grow tropical fruit may be selling these. If this needs to be moved, no problem.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Tropical Fruit in Spadina, Toronto
« on: May 17, 2015, 10:37:38 PM »
I took a weekend trip up to Toronto about a month ago, and had heard that they got some pretty good tropical fruits in the chinatowns up there. I made my way to Spadina chinatown and the chinatown on Broadview and Gerard, and these are some of the fruits I found.

They had fresh Durian, Jackfruit, Rambutan, Dragon Fruit, Caimito that they labeled milk fruit, green and purple, Soursop, Sweetsop, Mangosteen, and many others. As they don't need to worry about destroyed tropical fruit crops, they have different rules up there, and can import fresh fruit.

While I had read that you could bring fruits across the border back to the US, apparently not tropical fruit. Sad to say, I had about 10 bucks of Mangosteen and a Purple Caimito destroyed. Next time I will eat the fruit there and bring the seeds with a permit if possible. The Mangosteen was interesting to me, because it was from Colombia.

Fresh, green stems, not frozen ... should've eaten one.

Temperate Fruit Buy, Sell, & Trade / Wanted: Mara de Bois Strawberries

Anyone have any extra mara de bois strawberry plants or runners they would like to trade or sell?

Anyone of you tried Captain JAck's deadbug brew on your trees? It says it's the "organic" answer to killing pests. It's by Bonide. I've no affliation with these folks, but wondering whether it works. I've got a pretty bad scale problem, and my neem oil product and my "raid earth" bottles don't seem to work. I end up take a sharp object and scraping the scale off.

Temperate Fruit Buy, Sell, & Trade / Temperate for Tropicals Swap
« on: February 17, 2015, 12:30:14 PM »
It's nice to post in this new forum. Good idea, guys.

I'm in the mid-Atlantic and have access to many temperate fruits like Cherries, Apples, Peaches etc. Would anyone be interested in 1-for-1 trades? I buy my tropicals through the internet anyway; this would just be more trade than money exchange. :)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What's Growing On in Maryland, Delayed :)
« on: December 05, 2014, 10:44:57 PM »
I took a big break recently from the forum due to Pneumonia, but I'm recovered  ;D, and wanted to show anybody who cares what I'm growing. My intention was to show you all these pictures in early October, but then after a relative's birthday in mid October, I got sick. I gotta' tell you, I've never had Pneumonia before, and I never want it again.   :-\

Around halloween the wind was so strong the plastic greenhouse in the back blew over, despite being pegged into the ground. Thankfully, my dad was around to help put it back together, and help me clean up the mess, and try to repot seedlings. I didn't know at the time that I had pneumonia, just a bad cold I thought, oh well... what we won't do for our plants... I only lost my Sudachi seeds, 1 Mabolo seed, and 2 Jacuiba seeds.

For those that don't know, I live in Maryland, and grow everything in pots. It's a lot of shifting, from outdoors in a plastic enclosure, to out on the patio, to back in the enclosure, to inside to overwinter, but they bring me great joy, and it's worth every effort.  :)
Anyway, without further ado...my humble collection.
*Many thanks to friends and members who have given me plants and sold me plants.

Some Asian Guavas from seed, a Plumeria, a Sampaguita, and 2 Mangoes I got from Ethan.

Another view, includes Abiu, White Sapote thank TK for those, and my seed grown Cinnamon.

An Achachairu, Pink Lemon, Mocambo seedling, Grimal Jabo from Adam, Black Pepper, Calamansi seedling, Surinam Cherry in the Solo cup, and a Cabelluda.

My recovering Mexican Garcinia.

Meyer Lemon in Bloom

An Ylang Ylang, it was about 13" when I got it, now it's more than 2' and branches. Miracle Fruit, Jasmine GDOT, Cananga fruticosa, Eugenia pyriformis, and seedlings of various garcinia, inga, and citrus.

Another view

My largest seed grown guava tree, about 12 years old. Some seedlings of wild rambutan and pulasan. Some Philippine ginger in the back, and a Kamya, I think that's Butterfly ginger in English.

My 8 year old Duhat, Syzigum Cuminii, and my Lipote, Syzygium Curannii.

A Eugenia subterminalis, Myrciara coronata, Eugenia pyriformis, and Campomanesia phaea. They've grown new branches since they were given to me. Thanks RR. :)

A better view of the pot of Pulasan. I separated them out.

A better view of the Miracle Fruit. It's about 6 years old. Plenty of blooms, but no fruit.

Lastly, my plastic greenhouse to extend the season.
