LP - my red surinam's surely do taste different but I really LOVE them now.  They don't do too well in our intense heat -
I should probably plant one in some part shade to see if the production improves....

ED.....very interesting....so you are saying NO frostcloth is better idea?  I'd like to hear
what puglvr has come to conclude....I mean you might have something there, but it
goes against logic.......anyway, trees are  looking good...have a great harvest this year!

Grapebush - excellent plants!  I'm curious why that one papaya is LOADED with  fruit and
the other couple don't seem to have much going on....also, that surinam cherry - of that
I'm VERY jealous as I just don't get that flower production you do....wow!!!!  Any particular
fertilizer you use on the cherry's????

Lastlyif I was to guess, I'd say you were in a zone 9B....do you know what zone you are in
that I could translate into our US zone equivalent?????  It really feels about like my zone.....

Thanks Nullzie, Zands and Starch!  You know, feel I got lucky here as we had a couple of 32 degree nights that only affected the
poorer/colder locations around the yard.  Another couple degrees lower and things could have been way different looking right now!

Simon - that Kelp/Seaweed emulsion soil drench sounds like something I'll try.  I also saw some "report" on line that said to make sure
that one waters the baby mangoes sufficiently between the 4th and 6th weeks because it can cut into your harvest if you don't....

Thanks, Ed....

....you too Nancy - yes looks like it could be a wonderful mango season.....

Hi Frank - yeah there was some damage on a couple mangoes - the Maha Chinok and the Bombay, but the
rest seem to have fared pretty well...should be a nice mango tasting this summer....

knlim000 - the trees vary in age.  Most are 4-5 years old.  The Rosigold is like 8, and then there's a few
in the 3 year old column....

Thanks Warren and yes looking forward to the desert tasting this year, too, after the dud last year!

Hi Simon, yes FINALLY getting a decent bloom on the old LZ and I didn't include a picture of the LZ-grafted Manila,
but I'll try to get one posted here in the next few days.  About 7 grafts took, but there are still lots of Manila branches
thriving too....looks like it will be and see thing with that tree and the extent of future grafting on that tree.

How's your mango stock doing?  And do you know what might help my Edward to hold more of its nubbins to full
sized fruit?????  I've had only 1 huge fruit the last 2 years.....

So, this hot weather has kicked my mangoes into bloom bigtime.  Enjoy the pics! Hope to have a nice
harvest....fingers crossed that no cold spikes return... Gary
(PS - this year I shut off all the sprinklers to the mangoes on Thanksgiving and perhaps
that was the kicker for such a bounteous bloom - I probably have control over watering
more than most)

Alphonso

Chocanon - a FIRST time spring bloom (it always has bloomed summer and fall)

Coconut Cream

Gold Nugget

Keitt

Kent

Valencia Pride

Venus (thanks Dan for the cutting that took!)

Bombay - another first time bloomer

Edward - always heavy blooms and only one huge mango the last two years - any tips of getting her to hold more fruit?

Glenn - top burned last summer when I mistakenly used Frost cloth instead of Shade cloth on a particularly hot day

Keitt #2

Lemon Zest

Maha Chinok 1 (some frost hit the top of this one)

Maha Chinok 2

Nam Doc Mai Seedling

Pina Colada

Rosigold

Young Lemon Zest

Pan - as always so great to hear from you and your mango trials.  And I must say that
Glenn tree looks marvelous.  My mango trees are going nuts this year with their blooming...
I'll post something soon...

Again, good luck amigo!

I'm flabbergasted!

That's interesting Gunnar, cuz when I've gotten my Rosi to yield mangoes
out here in Cali they have been extremely good- fiberless, sweet and with
some flavor interest.....

Jeff - I did not cover the cut opening on the remaining papaya trunk and worried about that
myself as far as rot getting in there.  But it didn't happen but I have much less rain and humidity
than you, so I'll defer that answer to others.

Also, I have a tree that had the crown killed and it sprouted like 5 branches of various sizes
and actually held up in our recent 50+ mph winds....see if I can find a picture, not that you can see each branch ....

Well actually Jeff, I've been trained to cut the papaya's down anyway when they get too tall and they will sprout branches below that cut, so they should be OK.  Regarding the green papayas, besides using them in green papaya salads and other things made with green papaya (which I've never done by the way), the oldest ones, even if not colored up at all, can be put in the paper bag and possibly ripen.

I had a similar thing happen last year and the fruit that came down did manage to ripen using the bag trick and I was very surprised....

Starch - I didn't have much luck with a Cogshall I planted about 4 years ago in our desert heat.
It just kind of burned up. I did have 3-4 fruit that ripened one year and they were VERY average tasting,
and it is a VERY slow grower in our climate.  Just wasn't worth it for me.....maybe see if there's anyone in the
Phoenix Tropicals Fruit forum who's had success growing it.....

Nice job, Master Simon!  My 2nd Maha tree flushes 3-4 times a year, and my original one about 2 times per year.  maybe they like heat!
Now if only my 2nd Maha lives up to the Maha hype that my orig. Maha couldn't.....

Waterbug - yeah we get 100/100 easily here.  This year we've had 114 days of 100 or more and last year it
was 120.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Free Papaya Seeds
« on: October 19, 2015, 12:01:34 AM »
So, I have about 40 papaya seeds from a Caribbean Red papaya.  For me, out here in the desert, it is a
very tall plant, has kind of a deep orange flesh and is sweet tasting.  Very similar to a good Mexican papaya.
If anyone is interested in having me send them some, please let me know...pm me I guess....

Thanks, Gary
