Tropical Fruit Discussion / flowering grafted scion
« on: January 02, 2013, 10:20:17 PM »
Sorry no pic because that's too hard for a Nokia smartphone (or it's user ::)).

I have a grafted scion of Chocanon which i grafted 3 months ago and it took well. Now it is making a flower allready.

Should i cut the flower of ?Will the graft-joint break of the weight of the mango coming?

Actually i don't care so much if it will break off because i have another chocanon graft on that tree.
I can also put some tie-wraps around the joint to reinforce it and then let's see what happens.

This is my first grafted species on my 10-species tree which makes flowers. I m happy to see that grafts also can flower in reel.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Phillipine Super Mango
« on: December 26, 2012, 10:56:18 PM »
http://zuesresources.com/philippinessupermango.php

I just learned that PSM means Phillipine Super Mango and it is the sweetest one and in the guinnes book of records.

I thought psm means Pim Seng Mun which is a green thai mango so now i m very interested in psm aka Carabao mango.

I want to have all the best species on my tree's so is this PSM really as nice as i read? It should be better then Mahachanok or any other one. And is it susceptible to anthracnose?

I am looking for seeds from a nice big sweet passionfruit to grow in my garden in Bangkok.

In return i can send you something from Thailand or just pay you for the effort.

I am growing some seeds now and they are sprouting but now i regret that i do not have the nice sweet one. I looked all over the city but cannot find the real things so i try it this way. The one that i have is also called sweet but i want the real sweet ones.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / True Value
« on: December 11, 2012, 08:25:59 AM »
Today i found the shop TrueValue from the USA in Bangkok.
I bought a good gardenhose and spraryers with lifetime warranty on the hose and 10 years on the sprayers.

Does anybody have experience with this shop? Do they really give good warranty because the personell told me i have 30 days warranty only in Thailand. :o

If they write lifetime warranty or 10 years on the carton then i do not understand why i only get 30 days but it is so.

I have bad experience with american "quality brands" with 10 years warranty because of Calphalon nonstick pans. They did not give me any warranty at all when i claimed my pans lost the nonstick so now i m carefull and ask here before i buy more products.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Dwarf coconut tree
« on: December 10, 2012, 06:49:22 PM »
My neighbour gave me a dwarf coconut tree for surprise but i think it will be growing to wide for my garden.

Can i grow it in a big pot and will it still bear fruit in that? If so what will be a good soil for it?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Tropical (Thai) Cherry tree
« on: December 09, 2012, 04:33:55 AM »
Today i bought a nice Thai Cherry tree ( which is a plum actually i guess).

It is about 6 feet (175cm) and i want to plant it in a huge pot. When i saw the roots they were all going around in the pot, it was totally white.

Should i pull the roots more loose before planting or just plant it this way?

And does this tree special fertilisers to make the cherry more sweet? They taste like raspberry by the way, i like them.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pomelo and jackfruit fall from the tree
« on: December 07, 2012, 07:15:12 AM »
My mother in law has a problem in her garden, her pomelo's and jackfruits fall on the ground.

She sprayed some pomelo's with water every day and those ones are still hanging on the tree, the rest fell of.

The jackfruits also just fall down.

Does anybody has a remedy against this? She never sprayed anything in her garden, only water and the fertiliser she uses is leftover food that she throws under the tree's.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Shade lovers
« on: December 02, 2012, 09:42:30 AM »
I just read that the Salak is a shade lover. What other fruits can be grown in the shade? I have enough space left behind the house and grow paprika and lemongrass there but i prefer to grow tropical fruits.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Sweet Pomegrenate
« on: December 02, 2012, 09:22:30 AM »

I bought a pomegranate from India which looks and tastes very nice.

In Thailand they have sour ones so this one costed 5 us$ for 1.

Can i grow this one from a seed in our humid hot climate? If not would it grow better grafted on a thai rootstock? Or is it better to not waste my time in growing this fruit?

By the way they also sold huge ones ( like a small pomelo) from Israel for 15us$ a kg. From India they were 13us$ a kg and much smaller.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Tree's and floodings
« on: November 27, 2012, 06:03:22 PM »
I got an idea from the thread about Annona's.

My Annona sugarapple will come next week and i m thinking about grafting it on the rootstock from the pond apple. I read that this rootstock can stand floodings which Annona cannot.

My mango NDM also survived the floodings from last year, it was in 60 cm (2feet) of water during 3 weeks. Mango tree's that had been in about 2 metre (7 feet) water all died is what i saw.

I am also growing a jackfruit tree which cannot stand waterflooding. Is there a jackfruit rootstock that can stand floodings?

Are there other fruits that can easy stand floodings for some weeks?

I think many people in Thailand will like to know these things because the floodings might be back because the government didn't do anything yet to prevent them.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Fertilizing mangotree's
« on: November 23, 2012, 08:13:10 PM »
I would to know what you growers use as fertiliser on mangotree's and how much and when to apply.

I started mulching but now i have a pest of mangoleaf-eating weevils and i think i will stop mulching.

I prefer natural fertilisers as cow dung, bonemeal, woodash, vermicast, guano, coffee, seaweed etc. and also i use minerals as iron-chelate, manganese, boron . I fertilise them every 2-3 months with mostly natural stuff.
Do we have to fertilise when the tree is flowering? If so how much then?

My mother in law throws all the leftovers from food in her garden except plastic. She had huge banana's and loads of it. Also her mango's and other fruits do well.

My tree's look healthy and grow well but i am always looking for ways to improve. I only care for the best taste of the fruits, i do'nt need supersized fruits.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango roots
« on: November 22, 2012, 04:40:39 AM »
On the website from Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden i read this:

Location — the mango tree grows to a good size and casts a dense shade, but the roots are not destructive.

Does this mean that the roots from a mangotree cannot destruct a concrete floor or a concrete wall?

I have a Mahanchanok tree that has the perfect shape, i bought it for scionwood but it is too nice to cut in pieces.

I want to plant it in between a wall and drive-way floor which is 1.5 metre (5 foot) wide but my wife is so scared that the roots will break the floor or wall.

Mahanchanok grows slow and i want to keep the tree not taller then about 10-13 foot (3-4metre)high by pruning. Do you think i can grow it on that spot which has full sunshine?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / poisonous fruits
« on: November 14, 2012, 10:06:57 AM »
Me and my wife would like to know how we can check if the fruit that we buy is not poisonous.
We buy a lot of fruit on the local markets in Bangkok and we know that the Thai (we also eat from China or Japan or Australia imported fruits) use a lot of chemicals to grow their fruits.

How can we easy check if the fruit is safe to eat? Does anybody have a simple (or advanced) test that we can do ourselves?
