Decided to Plant my Maha Chanok...
« on: August 05, 2014, 11:10:16 AM »
Purchased it Jan. 2013 from Excalibur...fruited for the first time this year has about 3 mangoes...stalled about 4 weeks ago, it doesn't look like its grown much since. I figured I'd go ahead and plant it inground now its already Aug. and I wanted to give it at least 4 months to settle in its new home before our cooler/weather gets here in early Dec.

Nice.  How tall is it?  Looking at it on my phone, it looks to small to have fruit.  This gets me extra excited about mine.

I'd guess no more than 3 feet high.  Nancy - I assume you have a whole
winter protection plant for this gem, already in place...

 ???

I'll try my first Maha that was picked at the correct time this year (not
early, like a month ago, for the ones I used at my mango tasting event
2 1/2 weeks ago) and hope it shows VAST improvement.....

I hate to say this, but I think you should've planted your maha after you harvested the fruits.  If I were you, I would cut off the fruits since you planted the tree. The tree has to stop focusing on fruit growth and focus on root and vegetative growth. I'm not sure, but I think that planting a tree with fruit on it like your maha might cause extra stress, which is another reason why I would cut those fruits off. Good luck!

rbody, its a small tree but I decided to let the few fruits stay on...I know that I shouldn't have done it but took a chance anyways...

Gary, let me know how yours taste. Its planted under some Oak trees. It gets a few hours of sun but shaded in the hottest part of the day. I have a Cogshall planted several feet from this that gave me 30+ fruits this year. My goal for planting it here is to give it some protection from the Oak branches directly above. Of course I will cover/heat it when necessary  ;)

Tropic, I know that planting a mango tree with fruits isn't recommended but its too late now,lol...I'll leave it and see how it goes. I really wanted to get it in the ground asap so the tree will have several months in the ground before our colder weather arrives in Dec. Fingers crossed it does okay...

Wish me luck!!

Finally getting a little yellow on one of my Maha...took this picture today. Is it normal that's its yellowing at the bottom first? Or is it a sign that's its not going to ripen properly...its a small mango maybe 5.5" long

Also, any idea how much longer before I can pick this Keitt and ripen on the counter? Thanks!!

Nancy - my LZ's ripened like that and I waited till the yellowing was about
1/2 way up the fruit, and they ended up with an overly ripe, "soft nose".
I think someone told me that I should have picked it just when it started
coloring up on the bottom, as it then would trigger a general ripening in
all areas of the fruit at the same time.

Let's see what the experts have to say....

I've got two mango trees and was thinking of waiting until spring to plant. This makes me think I maybe should plant now. Don't like the risk of a frost after only a few months in the ground though.

Thanks John and Gary...I'll keep a close eye on it and hopefully some of the more Maha experts here stops by and give me their advise  :)

Shane, ideally you have the right idea...Spring is the best time to plant your mango trees to give them the longest time to get established acclimated before the first frost gets here...I decided to plant in now (only because I didn't want to wait 7-8 more months) but that's only because I'm impatient  ::)

Good luck!!

Shane - JF and I are always of the opinion to get it into the SoCal ground ASAP and
deal with the cold as (or if) it arises. Do you really get frost in your area?
I mean just having a couple sheets, or a piece of frost cloth or a blanket
should work just fine for anything down to 30 degrees.  Right now
is growing time!  And if it's in the ground those roots can start to
spread and send out more canopy...

But it's your choice of course.... ;)

Que es tu zona?

Well that makes me happy! Hit 32 here 4 or 5 times last winter. We get down to 27ish about once every 10 years. Will do as you say.

I found one of my Maha a few days ago laying on the ground, it was still mostly green so I set it on the counter for about 3 days to see if it will ripen. It looked ripe and smelled ripe so I cut it open last night and it was really delicious!!

Last fruit on the tree...I was lucky since I just planted it 3 weeks ago, I thought I would lose the fruits but  they hung on...

It's good to hear the Maha tasted good.  Thanks for the report, it seems that quality of the fruit depends on where and how it's grown.

Not sure if Maha deserves a limited spot in my back yard....think I may just keep mine in a 20g container.....

Thanks Simon and Gary  :)

I really like this mango I really want the tree to grow and hopefully produce more. My mango in pots are very slow to grow  ::)...but planting it inground with our occasional freeze is risky. Fingers crossed!

Good luck with your potted Mango Clay!!

Clay - perhaps the determination of where you plant it will depend
on how it tastes when it fruits NEXT YEAR!

wow... this one in a very late season mango in your yard. Experienced growers: when is mahachanok season typically?

Gary, between Fruit Punch, and Peach cobbler....not sure if Maha Chanok deserves the Real estate...not to mention Behl and JF's new variety coming out

Hi Brett, I think for us in FL Maha season is considered a late variety? A friend who lives in NE FL sent me a mango late Sept. last year...so I would guess our season is probably from late August to late Sept. Other than Harry I don't think there's a lot of us growing this year that older than 10 years old? But not positive...
