Are any of your trees dormant yet?
« on: November 14, 2014, 03:25:37 PM »
My sugar apples look pretty beat up atm, but other annonas seem to be lush.  Just read a UF report on SA that said trees go dormant in November, so I imagine the yellow and black leaves on my na dai trees will be dropping soon.

Are your sugar apples looking pretty rough this time of year?

My mango trees have stopped growing and my sugar apple leaves are yellowing up even though it has developing fruit on the tree from the second set of blooms. My fernandez custard apple is going through the same phase, minus the fruit.

My persimmons, jujube, Texas plum, and a couple apples have started to go dormant. I think this next cold spell early next week will put the rest of my non-ever greens to bed.

When do your soursops come out of dormancy normally?

Everything's dormant in my greenhouse but some citrus and a Waldin avocado that I'm going to use for a rootstock come spring.   Mangos are dormant and I'll soon be hitting them with a high K food.

Cold winter so far, had 25F this morn for hours (is now 26F as I write) and we're going down into the low 20's tonight.

Sugar apples should look awful this time of you year, and they don't really drop all there leaves at once, lots of leaves will stick on the tree until the Spring flush so they are only gonna get worse

Atemoya, sugar apple, persimmon going dormant.
The rest seem to continue growing but slower.

To my surprise, loquat is blooming.

Is there any harm in removing the older, yellow leaves while the plant is dormant.  Just for aesthetics

My Nam Doc Mai is Flushing, has 2 fruit on it, and now I spotted several flower panicles forming....Is my tree crazy? Or is Nam Doc Mai known to be a little crazy.

Yellow implies some photosynthesis, maybe not much, but some.

I always just let my leaves just drop by themselves.. they still have some energy left for the tree to use.. unless you do foilar spraying, then they brown up really quick.. I didn't get a chance to wash them off on my ice cream bean, and the old leaves started dropping off really fast.. My sugar apple is starting to yellow (and also dropping) a few leaves already.. haha, need to clean the weeds around the tree this weekend  ;D..

Michsu , soil looks very dry / infertile around your plant. Why not drop a bag of compost  spread around the drip line then some shredded leaves/ grass clippings and finish off with some wood chips . Just a suggestion. Is this a newly planted specimen ?

Thanks for the suggestion.. you guys are way more experts in growing fruit trees that I am.. I appreciate the comments.. sorry to take away from the original posting..

Yeah, the whole hill is pretty bad.. but most of my 30+ trees (about 20-25) are on there.. have no choice.. most of my backyard place to plant is a big slope.. have three and a half rows of drip lines installed with a timer at the hose.. maybe I took it at an angle, but I do add compost (dr. earth organics 9 and steer manure) and dynagro liquid into each 'hole'.. so it's dark in the inside, just around the base of the tree.. maybe I didn't add enough? I usually add about 3 shovel full of compost .. I was planning on adding more compost and fertilizer this weekend.. is it a good time? I hear that adding fertilizer (compost or foilar) every month from November to March is good? That was my current plan.. every 3 months to dump 3 shovels of compost for each tree, and then every month or two spray the foilar.. Thanks.

Oh, the sugar apple was planted in April 2014 (April 30)
here is the original picture (the picture above was taken last weekend - I take a picture about every month so I can compare).. how is the performance you think of the growth? Did I do a good job so far? Just to quickly get back on topic.. yeah, my annonas are still 95-99% green (including this sugar apple), so they haven't gone dormant yet.. I think the only thing 'yellowing' in my yard is the jujube tree.. Otherwise, everything else still has fruit or still slowly growing..
