I did a very difficult thing...
« on: June 28, 2016, 11:26:05 PM »
I cut off the one and only mango that set from my newly planted (this year nam doc Mai).  It's surprising how difficult this is!  Haha. But alas for the greater good of the tree growing and putting on size I had to it.  Just looking for some atta boys at this point. ;)

I'm sure there are many others out there that have felt the struggle while holding the snips in your hand... Debating if you really should do it.

At what size? You want to cut the fruit while it's still really small.

I am wondering, just HOW MUCH of an impact to the young tree if one would
leave just a single first fruit alone to maturity? All of my trees are young, so I really need to know this..., thanks!

I've struggled too in the early years  :'(...but for the greater good like you said its the right thing for the tree. I did that to my Maha...let it set several fruits when it was kinda small but did have several young branches already, it wasn't just a newly planted with with just one branch. Still it took a year and a half to recover before I saw new growths. This year I again didn't let it fruit, I'm letting it put all its energy into growing and by next winter it should bloom and hopefully be able to hold more fruits...at least that's my plan  ;)

What happen if you don't pick pea size?  what if it's golfball size?  Can you still pick them off?

Yes, but you drain the tree of more energy.

Tropic Al this does make me feel better!  haha  judging by the amount you pulled off i'm guessing i need to remove fruits next year from my nam doc mai again eh?   Come summer 2018 i aint pulling any off tho!  i will sacrifice 2017's fruit but thats it!

and other places where some trees only put on maybe 4" of growth per year...talk about Waiting!?!?!?XXX

gary this is true... everything grows year round.  it would be rough going through a winter and having all my trees stop progressing.   i noticed this with asparagus... people say it takes two growing seasons to get them but here we had plenty of asparagus like 6 months after planting.     I will rethink my complaining and be glad i live in hawaii with year round growth potential

That is an easy thing to do not difficult.Wisdom is not always your friend when the cutters are in hand but in this case it was the right thing to do.I routinely go a little overboard converting large trees to small ones.Time usually proves everything is alright.
