Jaboticaba Flowering But Not Fruiting
« on: April 11, 2020, 01:09:22 AM »
The Jaboticaba tree that was fruiting when we purchased it last year has flowered twice since but produced no fruit.  They're suppose to be self-pollinating and I know they are suppose to produce more fruit when they are with other Jaboticaba trees but we are getting no fruit at all after.  The grower advised that we fertilize with 15-15-15 fertilizer but so far nothing!  Does anyone have any ideas what the problem may be? Appreciate the input!

Nuts. Someone else from socal was posting about this issue a couple of weeks ago. Wonder if you guys are lacking a pollinator or a micronutrient.

My white jabo's also have it, they get sprayed with micro's every month at least. And for pollinators i saw ants, the flowers are so tiny i don't think our insects are interested in it.

Be careful fertilizing with 15-15-15. Too much nitrogen
I have been happy with Epsoma Hollytone?

I have had trees flower including a grimal and sabara and they never
set their first time flowering. Both have held fruit since Last spring my
red jabo flowered like this

Not one fruit set?
I was amazed and it was a tree that had flowered previously. It flowered again though and
set. This past year I had a grimal, white , and 4 reds get ready for a heavy flower and we
were 40F three nights in a row and all the flowers fizzled. That was in late January but all
3 trees flowered again and set fruit. The reds won't stop they have flowers, small green fruit
and ripe fruit all at once. When the cold and dry air fizzled the flowers you could see they
literally fizzled. Are you getting real dry cool air now? If you are getting flowers your on the right
track at least?

Im in San Diego and I have multiple Jaboticaba trees which have fruited. Since you say your tree has fruited before, we know age or sexual maturity is not the issue.

Have you transplanted or heavily trimmed or root pruned the tree recently? Do you have yellowing leaves? What variety do you have?

Some varieties of Jaboticaba are especially sensitive to the pH of the soil. The soil in my yard was around a pH of 8 which is extremely high. If you can get the pH closer to about 6.3, your tree will be a lot happier.

If you have a Sabara or Red or Hybrid, they seem to be able to tolerate the higher pH. Several of my trees were grafted onto Sabara rootstock by Adam of Flying Fox Fruits and these trees do great, even in higher pH soils.

You should try to determine the pH of your soil. If the pH is too high, you can try to lower the pH with sulfur. This will take time, in the meantime, you can immediately lower the pH with a soil drench with phosphoric acid, don’t bring the pH down too quickly all at once, you should bring it down slowly so you don’t shock the roots.

If you have an Iron deficiency, a foliar spray with Southern Ag Citrus nutritional spray will act quickly. You may also want to drench with the appropriate chelated iron drench based on the pH of your soil.

If it’s not the pH of your soil, ensure that your trees are getting enough water. Jaboticabas love water, especially if you want them to fruit. If you are watering them enough, there’s a good chance it’s lacking nutrition of some sort.

In another post someone mentioned using Triple super phosphate(0-45-0) but I prefer to use (2-45-28) or (5-50-17) because the little bit of Nitrogen helps with fruiting and the additional Potassium helps sweeten up the fruit. I used to use these pre bloom, I would just guess and use these about 2-3 weeks before I thought something was going to bloom but I’ve since switched to 0-10-10 because I use other fertilizers which supply other macro, minor and trace elements.

A picture of your tree will help. Having the tree in full sun will help with fruiting. If you are getting vigorous vegetative growth, your tree may have too much nitrogen.

In some cases, a proper pruning will set the stage for blooms.

Simon - are your jabos flowering now?  I posted earlier that mine had flowered but didnt set fruit - all of the flowers have since wilted away.  I'm going to take earlier recommendations of using Hollytone and see if I get better results as it warms up around here.
