New Hass Cultivar ("Grandma's"--Delray Beach)

http://eatinglocalinthetropics.blogspot.com/2012/01/who-says-hass-avocados-dont-grow-in.html

I think it would be worthwhile if someone with grafting skills (Jeff, Carlos, Jason, Har, Noel, Mike?) contacted the author and tried to get some scion wood from this tree to produce additional trees.  It sounds like a great addition to the Hass collection in Florida.  Otherwise, one of these days the gardeners at the senior community are going to chop it down because senior communities don't allow fruit trees!

Too bad she didn't cut it open to show us the size of the seed.  What do ypu suppose the Hass got crossed with to produce the long, crooked neck of this avocado?

The original post is 2 1/2 years ago.  Avocado trees planted in condo association property....especially near front doors do not have a long life expectancy.  Getting someone to get some scions for grafting would be an excellent idea.  When whoever gets the bud wood contacts the original poster, they should be prepared to pop her bubble about her seedling not being a Haas avocado, but rather a seedling of same......a potential new variety. The hook on the fruit is reminiscent of some squash fruits.

One and a half years ago.  But you're right.  That tree may be gone by now.

Thank you for this info! By the way my Hass avocado is growing biger than my other avocado trees bacon and reed. This is usually a biger tree? Thank's! :)

You'll find hass seedlings here and there throughout south florida. Lots of folks buy the hass at the supermarket and plant them out in their backyard.

I'm personally very attached to the FL hass though. It's very productive, it's dwarfish, it bears over the late fall months, and it's incredibly delicious. Being that it's slow growing, it does require some patience. But the long term benefits of not having to deal with a gigantic avocado tree far outweigh the upfront investment of patience.

Jeff how is your neighbors Fl Hass? Is he picking fruit.
All of mine are holding in the tree. This is my first year growing them.

The neighbor's tree is full of fruit (and still only about 5 or 6 feet tall!). It looks like it may still be a month away from being ready to pick.

It would be great if some Detective 'Forum Member' got on this case, found out where this tree is located and propagated it. It would be a real shame if it was allowed to be cut down and destroyed.
'Virtue' should be taught, learned and propagated, in order to save others and oneself.

I don't think this  fruit is that great. They look small and odd looking. I don't think is worth a lot of effort. effort.
