My sister has some WS trees in Oakland that are fruiting fine. I think if you can fruit citrus in your area, WS will do fine.

I bought some white sapote fruits online and after eating them i went and got five trees of different variety to plant. I regularly eat tropical friots from Durian to lychee, sapadodilla , Mamey Sapote, purple mangosteen...etc; white Sapote is one of the top fruits for me. Plus they are super easy to grow in temperate climate.

I got some seedlings from a tree in Hawaii and some from a tree in Cali. The seedlings from CA are way more vigorous. I also have a grafted whitman on Mamey and may use the scion later to graft on to the seedling.

Looking for the most hardy type of mango trees that can handle cold temps in winter for Fresno county zone 9 , 28 to 30 degree is not uncommon for winter

Manilla seedlings from homedepot or plant some  ataulfo mango seeds from the stores. Only seedlings would stand any chance. Dont waste money on grafted mangoes bevause most of them are grafted on turpentine rootstock from Florida; this roostock will eventually die in CA.  If you want to graft other varieties, graft it on the manila or atauflo seedlings when they get mature.

Hello!

Is anyone growing Manilla mango in the US?

How does it compare to Philippine/Carabao?

Seeking budwood or plant unless someone talks me out of it.

Isnt carabao and manila the same thing? Home Depot/Lowes have the Manila seedlings for sale around this time of year.

I just got one from Lara and will put it in ground once I get it. I 'll let you know how the fruit tastes in a few years...lol
Do you have another variety growing in case it needs some cross-pollination?

Yea, I also got a Vernon, Suebelle, and Younghans in ground already.

Cool, How big is your tent?

I just got a 48x24x60in tent for $65 on Amazon. I will run the lights at night probably from 6pm to 9am. Save electricity $ since its mostly out of peak hours and also keeps the tent warmer at night.

All the sweet tart seeds I got from Brad are now seedlings. Most of the seeds sprouted two to three seedlings each. Since it is winter, I used heat mats and clear storage containers to keep the heat and moisture in to germinate.

I tried vertical and horizontal planting the seeds as an experiment and the seeds that were planted vertically seem to have a more vigorous growth. I placed them all directly in potting soil 1 gal container.

The three containers in the front are some of the sweet tart seedlings.

Nice, I saved a few of the last ones foe myself and have them in pots in the garage but havent sprouted yet.

I also got one of those grow tents and have some plants in there and holy crap plants grow super fast in the tent.  Its worth it if you can use a small tent and your lamp and keep it hot inside it.  Those mangos will grow really fast in a tent sitting at 90F.

Thanks for letting me know about the grow tent. Does it get that hot in the tent with just grow lights or do you need a heater? My four grow liights are 40w each and they do get warm. My garage will get into the high 40s on the coldest mornings.

I have some mango seedlings in 1 and 1.5 gallon pots, should I mulch them or leave the soil bare?

People say mulching is good  but I see a lot of pictures on this thread showing seedlings in pots with no mulch so I would like to know if mango seedling in pots is an exception?

Thanks,

No mulch in pot that size. Just make sure the soil covers all the roots and is not covering the trunk.

Going to graft some scions from seedlings onto established trees. Should be a fun experiment, see which fruits sooner.

Great thanks. Goodluck on your grafts.

Finally picked the only Holiday fruit from my tree. Took 12 days to ripen in my house. This was the first time I got fruit from the tree planted in the ground in 2019. I know Holiday gets a lot of flak from people here but it was actually pretty good; smooth and buttery. A lot better than anything at the store.

Brad do you have any complaints with certain cultivars being more likely to get burnt leaves with high heat? I know this last week was exceptionally hot, but damn, my avos got beat up. Sir Prize shrivelled up completely. Hass and Lamb did ok.

My more matured avocado trees(3 years +) didnt get any damage at all, not even the new growth. However, my younger trees planted this year and potted ones got burnt. So age and being in ground matters too.

I bought a bunch of blueberries and blackberry plants from them last year and the year before. All came in good condition and fast.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: The Reed avocado thread

Thats because of the latitude like you are saying.  Not as much heat and sunshine as here.  Wait until October.  Hopefully they are ready by your cold season otherwise its going to be a 2 year deal to ripen them.  You are probably better off growing types with a shorter span like Carmen.

Yup, but I am not too worried. There are plenty of people who have fruited tasty Reeds here and even further north. I just was anxious and picked too early. I need to do some trial error tests to see when the perfect time to pick my Reed here in my yard.

It should be ready to pick now.  Thry are tasting amazing.  Having one with corn ship and hot sauce for breakfast today.

I picked one after July 4th and it was watery. It also took two weeks to ripen on the counter. I will try again in September. I wonder how longer it has to hang here in Norcal compared to Socal.

Here are a few seedlings I am growing.

24
I am growing three green sapote seedlings. There are indeed very slow growing. For some reason, I decided to give one miracle gro fertilizer and the leaves got burnt. I have been flushing it with water so hopefully it is alright. Planning to put them in the ground here in the Bay Area.

25
I have planted about 20 greens and a grafted green on green, they loveeee it at my orchard (Zone 9b, Santa Cruz).  I planted a small 1g seedling in the ground before winter and it had no issues.

Awesome, I will be doing the same
