Tropical Fruit Discussion / How do nurseries fertilize young mango plants

Do you guys have recommendations for the go to fertilizer ratios that nurseries use? I'm talking about seedlings from 2 months to let's say 18 months for example, mangoes or similar...

For some reason, most seedlings I purchase come with very wild and very strong roots. I have seen bags of 13-40-13 at some nurseries before, but I'm not sure if all that P is good.

What is your experience please?

As you can see, the issue is affecting older leaves first.

I'm suspecting:

Mg deficiency?
Phosphorus deficiency/toxicity?
Sulfur deficiency?
A micro deficiency?

sandy/pH 8.4/90% calcareous

Every great mango seems to be missing that one thing.

Let's suppose we create a one perfect mango out of two other varieties, what would you pick?

From my side, I would try an Alphonso with a Keitt. The goal is to get a reliable Alphonso or a Keitt with an Indian spice.

What is your combo?

I was wondering what would be your most perfumed mango that you had please.

A very perfumed mango in my definition is a one that fills up the room with its smell, and has a strong smell that stays on your fingers even after you wash them.

In my case, I once tried an Egyptian mango called Seddik and it matches all these characteristics. Seddik leaves also smell very strong, with the distinct Indian spice.

Recently I tried 2.3% of potassium nitrate 23g/L and I had thought first that I went crazy, and  was expecting damage but to my surprise plants (Mango seedlings) were super happy with it.

Today I had 20-20-20 with micros that shows 2.5 to 3g/L and I thought I would ask when foliar feeding, what would be the nutrient to pay the most attention to please?

Potassium nitrate is like 13-0-46 but I wanted to give phosphorus too and I thought the 3g dose would be a way smaller than 23g of KNO3

If we do the math:
23g/L of KNO3 is 3g of N and 10.6G Of KO2.
3g/L  of 20-20-20 is 0.6g of N, 0.6 of PO5 and 0.6 of KO2.

So if Nitrogen is the issue, I could go with as much as 5 times of 20-20-20 (15g) to reach 3g N.

Do you have any experience with going crazy with dosage and not seeing a negative effect?

I had several Mexico grown Mallikas for the first time a couple of months ago, and I had planted some seeds. I'm trying to identify them now, although I understand that they're mono. I also have a hard time remembering if there was a very strong resinous taste in them reminiscent of Carrie/Alphonso for example? Could you please confirm if that kind of taste is not very well pronounced in Mallika. Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Taproots trigger my OCD - Mango/Mamey/Lychee

The heat these days is ideal for seedling growth. I planted few seeds a couple weeks ago and I'm having a hard time keeping up with the taproot growth.

A bit more about my climate and soil, I have some of the hottest and driest summers in the Mediterranean. Temperatures are common to hover around 100f these days. And worst of all, for about 4 months at least, there would be absolutely 0 rain. Soil is very calcareous sand with negligible water holding capacity.

Irrigation is required and good stored rain water is a luxury. I'm telling you all of this because I want reassurance if possible, that even if the taproot gets "touched" I wouldn't lose a lot in the drought resistance front.

I use now 14-15" grow bags but I'm not confident that those will be enough. Same thing with Mamey. How long do you think I could keep a seedling happy in that kind of a bag please?

In the past I had a nasty issue with bottom root rot even though the bags are perforated, it seems that when I place the bag on tiled floor, the humidity still accumulates at the bottom and takes forever to evaporate because of smooth base of tiles. Have you noticed anything like this before?

One last thought, I once accidentally broke a mango taproot and few days later, it regrew? If that's always the case, it gives me hope that any damage may be reversible maybe?

I did a soil test and as expected my sandy soil came back low in almost everything but calcium with 8.4 pH and very low organic matter.



I'm not worried about micronutrients as I could probably foliar feed them and/or use chelated ones.

My issue is with N-P-K-Ca-Mg. I'm having a very hard time figuring out how to fix those deficiencies when some can block others.

Let's say I start with a good balanced 20-20-20 (20gr per seedling for example). If I add Calcium, it may compete with Potassium and Magnesium and the same goes with adding Magnesium. And I'm not even mentioning Na if I use saline water for irrigation.

I understand that I should add organic matter, but are there any recommendations on how to give fertilizers while avoiding as much interaction as possible. Do you have any ideas especially the folks who grow in fast draining sandy conditions.

Does anyone know what the regulations are about treating imported fruits?

Is it the country of origin that decides whether the fruit has to go through irradiation vs hot water?

Today I got a box of Rambutan grown in Guatemala and the box says that the fruit wasn't irradiated. But Vietnamese longan and Indian/Pakistani mangoes seem to be always irradiated?

I'm asking as apparently HWT doesn't affect the seeds.

Is there a pattern for mango pushing new growth? I have sandy soil that leaches nutrients fast so I'm trying to time my immobile micronutrients amendments to synchronize with new growth flush. It's even more pain with an alkaline soil as far as chelation... What micros would you prioritize as chelated please? We're talking about small seedlings so new growth is all what matters. You can assume an extremely poor soil.

An other question, will foliar feeding immobile nutrients that affect cell division like zinc/boron/calcium help new growth? Thanks!

How would you treat an extremely severe calcium deficiency in 2-3 years old mango seedlings that look like 6 months old please?

I added 40gr (almost 3 Tbsp) of calcium nitrate to each one's roots (diluted in irrigation water) and I also have been spraying a lower dose of the same product for the last 3 days. I do see progress but I'm too worried that I might not be doing enough. Sandy soil with >8 pH and low Mg content. I have been spraying Mg before and I gave Mg sulfate about a month ago. Let me know if I should be doing more, or less please...

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Soursop seedling new growth droopy/wilting/folding?

I'm in the Mediterranean and temps these days are in the 70 day/50 night. First time I grow a soursop seedling, and this will be its first winter so I have been checking on it multiple times a day :)

I was wondering if you guys can guess from these photos, the reason why the newest growth doesn't seem as healthy as the older. So the leaf in question feels very tender and seems like it will be wilted and dry in the near future. I have been feeding the tree moderately, it's not hungry in any way. If anything could it be overfeeding?

Or could it be the cold? Drought?  I'm mostly concerned by the left leaf, not the little tiny one as I think they all start like that right one when very young.
