The big wholesaler here grafts them. I have been learning how to airlayer them. In my experience they are difficult to airlayer. But I’m still trying new things and will hopefully improve my success rate.

I have had some success in rooting the little suckers that popup around the base of the plant. Root them like any cutting, but takes longer.

Haven't tried starting seeds myself, but heard that they grow easily from seed, then you can graft your variety if it's a good one.  There's a lot of variation in quality, some not good at all and others excellent.  I think I remember Marta (Really Good Plants) mentioning April is the best time to graft.  Also Fruitwood nursery sells seedlings and scions of named varieties, just get on their list to be notified when in stock.

Cleft grafting is basically 100% success rate for me. Buy cheap nursery style rootstocks and then graft with known good quality. I bought scions from Fruitwood nursery. Grafted if I recall correctly, in June and they worked fine - though I'm sure early spring is better.

Home Depot has named varieties here in CA: nazemetz, coolidge.

You can ground layer it if you have low branches you can cover with dirt until they root up

I actually had a bunch of cuttings in a compost pile produce roots.  Try cuttings in milled peat moss.
