Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Dwarf mangoes for growing in pots
« on: June 24, 2019, 07:19:57 PM »
Pickering supposed to be precocious and prolific, many people love the taste. It is easy to maintain and the tree is available almost in every nursery or online with very reasonable price. I have one in the ground, but I only planted it last March. So far it is growing great in hot California summer with 12+ hours of sun everyday.
The other one that supposed to be really dwarf is Malika. My friend has one, after 10 years in the ground the tree still only about 6 ft height with 5 ft width. Last year it had around 100+ mangoes, this year only around 20. According to my friend, it is an alternate bearing for her, but she loves the mangoes and it is disease free (at least here in California).

I have a red hog plum that is very tasty. I also have a purple or gold hog plum
and it is much less desirable. The fruit is larger on the purple tree but the skin is very
bitter. I split the skin and drink the juice and spit out the large seed and discard the skin.

The red has less flesh and is very unique and very good, my large tree has hundreds of
fruit so I can eat a handful at a time and really enjoy them. I plan to remove the purple one and
replace with another red when I get the time. I also have a small yellow one that I am waiting to
evaluate. I hope it is not another gold/purple one?

Do you know the scientific name for the tasty red one you have and where to buy the plant? Thanks!

Does this taste any good? From my research the taste isn’t too great.

I never try any, but I read that a lot of people describe it as 'addictive', so I figure it couldn't be that bad. If I don't like the fruit I can sell it online, they have it on etsy.com for a good price.

Raul,

I just rooted mine in a large tree pot and it is fruiting now. I don't think they do that great in the ground in Southern California.

Mark

Hi Mark,

Is your mombin still in the pot? I have a June Plum growing nicely in the ground (been through winter), and flowering now. I wonder if Purple Mombin is as cold hardy. Thanks

I purchased a Purple Mombin (spondias purpurea) a couple of months back as a stick in a container. It has put on a lot of growth since and wanted to know how hardy this tree is to cold. This way I can decide whether to leave it in the pot or plant it in the ground.

Thanks in advance
Raul

Hi Raul,

I wonder how your purple mombin is going after 4 years. Did you get any fruit yet?  I am going to buy a tree from Mimosa Nursery, but I would like to know how hard it is to maintain this tree. Thanks!

Wow, that’s a beast! Here’s another puny by comparison Cherimoya, this one is a Dr. white, just under 2 lbs

Simon

What a good looking cherimoya you have. How prolific is Dr. White? I am debating whether to get a Dr. White or a Big Sister. Mimosa Nursery in LA has Dr. White trees that already have flowers for only $40/ 5 gallon. But Big Sister is only available at Bonita Creeks and the price tag is pretty steep for me.

Golek is a variety that very popular in my home country, Indonesia. But it was considered a second tier mango over there. It is very sweet, juicy, with a little fiber, very thin seed, and no scent.
Arummanis (means sweet aroma)is the one that considered top tier. It was my favorite childhood fruit.
Arumanis mangoes have a vibrant green skin with large, light-yellow dots. The fruit maintains its green coloring even when ripe and is ready to eat. Arumanis mangoes have an overall elongated and elliptical shape, can weigh up to one pound. Bright yellow to orange color flesh has a strong, sweet aroma and flavor . The flesh is thick and juicy and mostly fiberless.
There is a guy in San Gabriel selling the grafted arummanis, but I cannot tell if it is legit.
The picture on his web looks legit, like the arummanis I know.

darn! I wish I read this before I placed the order. I sent him email to cancel, he shipped it the next day! But I still can call my credit card to dispute this transaction based on fraud / false advertisement.
Good thing I used chase CC, the best customer service ever.

thanks everyone

yeah, I found someone in Florida sells it, but he does not ship to cali.
maybe I need to do a cross country trip for this  :(
It would be confiscated in the Arizona/California boarder. Have you tried champa? I will have grafted HK in October on Manila type rootstock

I had a bad experience with Champa last time.
If you will have it in October, I will buy it from you. It will be only one hour drive to OC from my place.
I have a Manila that grows happily in the ground for two years, but cannot hold more than 2 mangos this year.
However the tree is trouble free and vigorous, so I assume HK grafted on Manila rootstock will be a win-win for me.

I am in cali and really want to grow a Honey Kiss. Seems like nobody sell it here, and online only Plantogram has it for $119 non including shipping fee. By I read some bad reviews about Plantogram including the variety not true to the name.
Does anyone know where to buy honey kiss here or who will be able to ship it here?

Thanks in advance

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Wanted :Honey Kiss Mango Plant
« on: June 12, 2019, 02:53:12 PM »
Hello everyone,

Anyone know where I can get a 3 gallon or 5 gallon Honey Kiss Mango Plant?
Have been searching online with no result, and local nurseries don't carry it either.
I live in California, Los angeles, will pay for shipping.

Thank you!

419
Is there any seed still available, Raul?
If not, can you put me on the list for the next available ones?
Thank you

Maybe the fruits failed...
Ugni Molinae (red Chilean guava) is relatively easy to buy online.
I just purchased 3 seedlings about 2-3" from Annie Annual, they wrapped it really well, the plants are
super healthy, and their customer service is awesome! Too bad they don't carry the black Chilean guava.
If anybody interested to get the red ones/Ugni Molinae, here is the link:

https://www.anniesannuals.com/search/?q=ugni

I got 3 from annie's too about 3 months ago. They are 14" now and growing well.

Do you know how long it takes before they start bear fruit?

I remember a while back some folks were looking for a source for Black Ugni (Ugni myricoides).  I now have a bunch of fruit/seeds -- I'd be happy to share it with anyone who's interested.

Hello,

I know it's been a while since you posted this. But I have been looking around for Black Ugni (I just purchased a small red ugni seedling), and no one has it.
So if you still have some seeds or maybe seedling, I would be happy to purchase it from you.

Thanks!
