Do these look like sweet violet or eastern Giant?

The small dark one is labeled as purple pearl, the larger one as sweet violet but ordered as Eastern Giant.

Those look eastern giant, small one appears to be SV.

Eastern Giant

I’m confused on Calmei’s trademark naming. Anyone else find it weird that the trademark names cover multiple varieties?

Very confusing, I suspect it is because they want to be able to fill orders if they have < 8oz of the right variety with other fruits

As promised I biked over to the Mission Bi-rite this morning-

Advantages - pick your own fruit, in your own amount

Cons - only appear to have purple pearl at the moment

Shipping the fruit to TX also went pretty well,

Everything was edible, and the recipient was very happy- I put 2 ice packs in the box and used priority shipping

Fruit on the right looks like Sweet Violet and fruit on left looks like Eastern Giant. I’ll suggest the shredded paper as a filler.

elouicious, nice photo of the basket of yangmei. Did you play tricks and edit the photo to show that $54/lb cost?

The only thing I can think of that you're talking about is the description for Eastern Giant.  A very small number of fruits sold under that name are from seedling trees that Yunfei selected that are essentially identical to Dongkui.  I don't think it's weird.

Anyone wants Sweet Violet seeds? I bought one box to see if it is worth it to grow yang mei. It was quite sweet, but honestly I prefer my Suriname cherry and pitangatuba over sweet violet.
I still have the seeds in the fridge, if no one wants them I will throw those in a week.
Btw, I also ordered Fei Ji Xiao Lychee from saywee, and liked it more than the Yang mei.

I have couple friends brought some from weeee, they all reported the fruits are bit of dry not as juicy as they ate in China.

I don't like CalMei renamed all the varieties.  Made a lot confusion to me.

Vietnamese nurseries have bad habit of renaming annoyas, wax apple, etc...

CalMei renaming varieties is going to be a nightmare.

I have mixed feelings about the use of trademark names but don't believe it is cause for any great concern.  The vast majority of fruit being purchased is from consumers who are not involved in growing fruits themselves and their interest is centered in the enjoyment of fresh fruit.  We have many different fruits that are sold with trademark names such as Sumo citrus, Pink Lady apples, etc.  I see grapes sold with interesting names and have no idea if they have other names but buy them and enjoy them.  What about the naming causes you concern?

You are not a grower nor a collector just want enjoy the fruits, then it is not an issue.
Many of us here are collector, this is a nightmare to us.

Buying the same plants under different names at high prices.  Some plants take several years to fruit just to find out that they are the same.  Time, money, real estate, efforts, confusion, not well spend.  Even worse if the variety turn out to be bad for your taste.

Purple pearl states that it is mostly biqi and eastern Giant states that it is mostly dongkui. I know there are trademark names for all of the fruits sold in stores, just was not sure how common it was for them to include various varieties under the same name, but maybe it’s a common practice.

Anybody buying fruits and planning to plant the seeds are going to get something different from each seedling anyways.

All Purple Pearl are Biqi.  The wording on Calmei's website should be changed.  If you buy Eastern Giant, 99% chances you are getting Dongkui.

I remember one reason explained to me about the use of trademark names is because of the general public being able to pronounce them.  Many people don't pronounce yangmei correctly.

I have tasted both the Eastern Giant and Sweet Violet. Eastern Giant definitely tastes better to my taste buds. Sweet violet is not a bad fruit but I do detect a slight soapiness.
Grow mainly fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

I know some of my fruits go to Airmart but don't know how their distribution works but believe it's just in the Bay Area.  I did a search and found their listing for yangmei at https://shop.goairmart.com/en/c/s/44526?sharing=1?utm_source=wordpress&utm_medium=yangmei

We don't really have the time or energy for casual farm visits but have some tours from people interested in possibly purchasing our farm.  We'll make time for that.  We had accepted an offer from one potential buyer but the contract expired before he could arrange financing but he's still working on that but we're open to other offers because we're motivated to stop working so dang hard.
